Watching how Reyes played tonight wanted to see how far he was from being the Mets All Time Leader in games played at shortstop. He has a ways to go.

According to Baseball-Reference this is where things stand including tonight’s game.

    1.) 1281 Games – Bud Harrelson
    2.) 0907 Games – Rey Ordonez
    3.) 0802 Games – Jose Reyes***

The math if correct says Reyes is 480 games away from becoming the new Mets All Time Leader in games played at shortstop. With 96 games remaining this season Reyes 480th game would not come until the 60th game of the 2013 season.

Of course that is without counting any number of things including future injuries or even if he will still be with the team and also I am not sure if post season games count. For the sake of this comment I am assuming they don’t.

1,282 sure looks far away. I look forward to Reyes one day reaching that mark and setting the bar for future generations to strive for.

***(Their seems to be a discrepancy though if you do career splits B.R. says Reyes has played 802 games at SS including tonight’s game but B.R. Most starters page says 803. I will go with 802 for now)

There is no way his option is not picked up for next year and they really need to consider dropping an extension on him ASAP.

Amazing that trading him was a consideration. I know Wright is great (clutch vs. un clutch debate aside) but I think Reyes is more important to this team than he is. Not saying Wright sucks or we should trade him or nothing. He is colosal, stupendous, good even. But as the saying goes, “As goes Reyes, so goes the Mets”.

Speaking of Clutch… Elephant Riders! Such a good album.

      1. stickguy

I am sure the extension discussions will be starting mid sason. Hopefully it gets done before the end of the year, but not really that big of a deal. Most likely, it gets dones as part of picking up the option.

But, you never know, he might want to go to FA to see if he can hit the jackpot. Besides, the 2 big $$ teams will both need SSs, unless you think Jeter can still do it 2 years from now!

Mostly I think the Mets were waiting to see that he was 100% healthy and back to normal. But, team Reyes might want to get something done soon, since God forbid, if he reinjures the leg, his value will take a major hit.

        1. njstuckintx

          Agreed.

I can see him running about 14+ mill a year? 15+ mill? 5 years? He’s only 27, so I can see 5 years on him easy.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

definitely. there’s no sane reason for him to test the FA Market. Mets should include a life-time free membership to the tattoo parlor…

          2. njstuckintx

Or free haircuts for life, not that he’d use it.

      2. ceetar

All offseason stuff. But Wright and Reyes need to be Mets for life. It’s just how it is.

        1. Kingman 26

          Absolutely.

I really and truly think they both WANT to be Mets forever, especially if we keep the winning ways going, and especially with how bright the future looks at this moment.

  2. DNDJohan aka kistics

The players’ poll shows that CB Buckner is the worst ump in the league, but he’s been great to the Mets. Tuesday night game, he was the 1st base ump when the Mets hit something like 7 IF hits.

  3. stickguy

Interesting stat in SHerman’s 3-up (I kow, sign of the apocoplyse)

Met’s actually have abetter record vs. teams with a winning record than a losing one.

But, the Yankees are 20-5 vs. sub-.500 teams, and something like 21-24 against teams with winning records (which might explain this last series!)

Hey, maybe it is the “other” NY team that people shold be worried about keeping it up!

Bit game tonight. Set the tone with a beat down of Javy, who has actually been pitching pretty good lately.

    1. ceetar

Mets are due to hit Javy. The bullpen is weak, and pitched a lot yesterday. The series really could swing on how fast they get Vazquez out of there. Keep the bullpen from ever being fresh. Also, if A-Roid is back at third, make him make plays. I’d even be willing to concede a Reyes or Tejada bunt in that direction.

      1. njstuckintx

Imagine, bunting 3 straight times to start the game and have Arod blow out his hip? That would spike up the rivalry and prob start about 50 scuffles in the stands for sure.

        1. Kingman 26

Most of which Met fans would win.

      2. metsfan4decades

Or if ARod is PH tonight, keep an eye on that replacement 3rd baseman as he made at least one error last night that accounted for an unearned run or two….

Speaking as someone who doesn’t follow the sport at all, that was a tremendous soccer game, or football match, or whatever I’m supposed to call it.

Sure looked to me who doesn’t know the rules that the US should’ve had that 3rd goal in the 85th minute…

    1. ceetar

speaking as someone who isn’t/wasn’t watching any of the World Cup, taht’s what the twittersphere seems to think. “jessespector: So we head to stoppage time tied, 3-2. “

    2. stickguy

was watching it. And yeah, after many replays, the announcers were pretty sure that the only foul was the Slovenia guy mugging an USA player.

Refs stole that one from the US.

    3. oleosmirf

as someone who referee’s soccer as a part time job, i can tell you that the referee was awful. The only foul on the play was the US player getting tackled…it was a clear goal and should of been a US win, which would have almost assured us advancing…

      1. njstuckintx

As a watcher of soccer, I missed it. Fell asleep 2 minutes into it. It’s slow woman’s tennis minus the skirts and adds more acting… Kidding, but not really.

        1. Kingman 26

I think you have actually generously overstated the speed and excitement level of an average soccer game.

          1. stickguy

they are much better in person.

I just dont think it translates well to TV. Even on 50″ HD, the camera angle is so wide and far away, it looks like you are watching from a blimp, without the camera. Just up in a blimp.

          2. ceetar

Most sports (except maybe football?) are better in person. Even just the crowd energy and excitement tends to up the fun.

  5. njstuckintx

Rusty’s taking his time today… I need some obscure met’s facts for lunch reading.

  6. stickguy

    Hey, big series starting today.

What happened to all the authors? Nothing new to discuss today?

    I guess success breeds contentment!

    1. Kingman 26

      “I guess success breeds contentment!”

Not in the comment thread to my post yesterday!

      :-)

  7. oleosmirf

this is going to be a very telling start for Takahashi…pitching against the Yankees again in their tiny stadium is going to be a very tough task.

  8. metsfan4decades

BTW…I heard a tidbit late last night either on SNY or MLB network. Don’t remember which one it was b/c I was half asleep.

Apparently the Philly GM Amaro made a comment admitting that trading away Lee has apparently ‘messed’ with the Phillies karma and they’re looking into re-acquiring him.

LOL….If Omar ever came out and said something about the Met’s ‘karma’, we’d be begging Wilpon to make sure he never has access to the media again. Secondly, how in the world does Philly think they’ve got nearly the prospects it’ll take to land Lee a second time?

    1. njstuckintx

Just pass along the ones they got from Seattle in the first place, no? :)

      1. stickguy

that group right now might get you millwood. maybe.

They have all sucked. 1 got hurt, and the “big” guy had to get demoted back to A ball, since he got beat up so bad in AA

    2. metsgirl31

Yea I heard that too on SNY last nite. First of all, hopefully they are not able to pull off that trade and secondly that comment made him sound slightly off.

      1. metsfan4decades

Ha! Thanks for the confirmation it was SNY. And yeah, I though it sounded just a tad bit strange coming from the GM….

    3. Kingman 26

I heard that too. Things are VERY desperate in Phaillies land.

If they don’t figure out a way to hit without knowing what pitch is coming, they can re-acquire Lee, Steve Carlton, Jim Bunning, and Robin Roberts and they won’t beat out the Braves and the Mets.

      1. metsgirl31

Agreed. When I heard that I thought it was odd cuz I don’t think pitching, or lack thereof, is their biggest problem.

        1. metsfan4decades

This past series with the Yanks was just opposite of what anyone would have predicted. Halladay getting lit up? Moyer and KK getting the job done?

That aside, I think the Yankees have more problems than they’re willing to admit. Cano is basically carrying that team right now and in the long term, that’s not going to get them a repeat to the WS. Tex is in a year long slump. ARod is hurt and it shows, Jeter isn’t putting up the numbers he did last year. They’ve got other injuries besides ARod they’re dealing with and AJ and Vasquez have been up and down. I think the Phillies hit them at the right time. Here’s hoping the Mets do likewise….

          1. metsgirl31

            +1 big time…

          2. ceetar

The Yankees still have a great record, but the cracks are there. Will they burst? who knows. But this series could end up being big. If they lose it, and the Sox do well, they could be ‘out’ of the playoff picture.

      2. stickguy

reading the local papers today, they are starting to be cautiously cocky again. Starting to think that the yankers series means the bats are back.

Other than some bandbox HRs, not quite sure that is true, and the next series should be telling.

  9. njstuckintx

I think if Jaybay hits a couple in the bandbox in the bronx, he’s going to have his stock soar in the mind of many a met fan. His overall HR total won’t be such a concern as it is now.

    1. stickguy

starting one his his scorching hot streaks tonight would be a very nice present for met fans.

    2. ceetar

Fine by me. The Mets are in a playoff spot with him underperforming, so if he coudl turn it on, it’d go a long way towards keeping us there. (and separating us out from the other teams tied with us)
