makes sense. Assuming they will actually use parnell.

I think between him and iggy they should be able to manage the set up role, with pedro and elmer also available.

That 5, with neive mixed in, has plenty of potential to be good. valdes looks lousy though, so a replacement for him would be nice.

    It’s about time…..

      Agreed

Finally. This is great news, almost enough to take the edge of today’s loss. So much for my optimism for today, the band box did indeed do Johan in. A couple of runs from our boy’s wouldn’t have hurt either. Day off and let’s get’m Tuesday.

Whoever they promoted to me the much more important part of the equation is Mejia to the minors to start.

As far as who they did promote, I hope Parnell’s experience in the minors in 2010 has contributed to his development as a pitcher. He was pretty rotten for most of last year. I’m rooting for him.

Bring em up and show their stuff. Hopefully this adds some trade value to the young lad.

And I hope this either starts mejia into the mold of Doc Jr., minus the coke, or helps his trade value to soar a little. I really feel after this weekend, we have a solid 3 in Pelf and a solid 2 in Santana. Lee or Haren would really give that top of the rotation kick this team will need to go deep into the playofs.

While I would love Haren, if Santana is a 2 and Pelfrey is a 3 then based on stats Haren would be a 4. I don’t even like #’s anyway. All 3 are upper rotation pitchers.

          Lee is a 1!!!!

Forget about any of those names we aint getting them, same old no big moves at the deadline. Until somthing happens I won’t get sucked into rumors, and as for the playoffs aren’t we gettining a little ahead of ourselves, its only june.

Cheer up, charlie. I’m not buying the glass have empty nonsense.

no suprise here but I would like to give my thoughts on Mejia…

the one thing i am concerned with is that if his stuff was that good, why didnt he get as many strikeouts…i expected to see command problems and walks but i also expected to see lots of swings and misses and those weren’t there.

he has a live arm and im sure he might turn into a very good SP or a closer but I never got the impression that he is a cant miss superstar in the making and b/c of that, i have no problem trading him for a pitcher like Cliff Lee (even as a possible rental).

    1. trs86

Yeah, I don’t look that much at the K’s. His K’s will improve with his control. He has to learn to control his breaking stuff. I still think he will be pretty damn good. Something about his demeanor.

      1. oleosmirf

idk there wasnt a point where I said wow this kid is something special…

if you have an opportunity to get Cliff Lee, who I think would make us the best team in NL…i dont think Mejia should be untouchable like many have suggested…

        1. trs86

No player is ever untouchable but I need to see if Lee will be the one that makes us legitimate WS contenders. If not I don’t want to give up our best prospect for a rental. If nothing else guys like Mejia and especially Davis have given credit back to the Mets farm.

          1. oleosmirf

i believe acquiring Lee and Aardsma plus the return of Beltran makes us the best team in the NL…

You guys see the catch our 5th round pick made in the CWS? It’s # 1.

    Matt Den Dekker catch

or if you prefer not to sit through all of ESPN’s top 10 plays, this link is just the catch

    1. trs86

Wow, nice play. Scouts were right on him being a plus defender.

      1. stickguy

If he can hit at all, he just might have a future!

  9. stickguy

I think mejia showed plenty of flashes of being special, especially considering he is only 20, and hardly had any time in AA.

the stuff is there, just needs refining and maturing. He will get plenty of ks as he develops.

besides, most guys don’t get Ks even with a 95 FB. that just sets up the K pitch.

    1. gategem

At the age of 19 Doc Gooden struck out 276 batters in 218 innings. That is an unbelievable stat.

saw this over o spyder (I love that little tool). sounds like the worry about Maine disrupting the rotation was unnecessary. I would not be at all surprised if the result of the tests is that maine is diagnosed with another problem (or continuation). only real question is, does it require more surgery? If so, poor guys career almost has to be over.

for this year, even if he doesn’t need to get cut, likely he gets shut back down for an undetermined amount of time for rest. In any case, he won’t be a problem to deal with for a while, if at all.

    1. ceetar

It’s tough luck. Especially since it seems like they didn’t actually fix whatever was wrong last year, so seems some sort of continuation. wouldn’t surprise me to find out his pitching mechanics are what causes the strain on the shoulder.

      1. trs86

Most likely yeah it was his mechanics but that is not Met caused for sure. He was having those problems even in 2008.

    2. GravediggerHebner

      Thanks for that link Stick.

I just re-read Rubin’s piece on Mejia’s demotion and noticed this line:

“Minaya insisted the decision to demote Mejia had been in the works for a while, and was not influenced by needing rotation options now that John Maine’s rehab tour has been aborted because of continued shoulder issues.”

But I hadn’t seen it anywhere else so thanks.

      1. trs86

I think that part was obvious. I think it had much more to do with the fact that they believe Parnell is ready and the BP needed another arm.

  11. stickguy

I am going to take the optimist position here (AKA the anti-oleo) and say that with the pending adjustments, the pen is going to settle in, and be a big part of keeping the team in the playoff hunt. Still think Valdes should be moved for someone else, but that is about it now.

    1. oleosmirf

if you say so…I still think trading for Lee and Aardsma is the way to go.

Parnell/Nieve, Igarashi, Dessens, Takahshi, Aardsma, Feliciano, K-Rod is so much better plus you have insurance just in case K-Rod cant close for whatever reason
