Seems kind of early to me. Aren’t these kind of trades done in late July?
We really need the Twins to take a nose dive this month, hopefully we can help accomplish that.
Would love to have Lee go against Strasburgh.

GO TWINS!
I do hope the M’s are smart enough to make the Twins give up more than we did for Johan…..

lol, I hope the the M’s are smart enough to make the Mets give up more than we did for Johan (which as it turns out was pretty much nothing)

I thought you said you like Lee so long as we don’t give up the farm?

I most definitely did! I promise, other than on Jerry, I really am NOT Jekyll and Hyde!
I seriously fear losing either Mejia OR FMart.
One thing I have been consistent about, even in the darkest moments of my 5–6 week period in the wilderness of my Ollie/Maine/Jacobs/Matthews Met depression, I NEVER wavered in my belief that this team is a monster in the making.
I would just hate to see Lee in the Bronx or Fenway and FMart or Mejia wearing Mariners uniforms to the All-Star Game.
If we can get Lee without trading Ike/Niese/Mejia/FMart, I seriously would be ecstatic; send anyone and everyone else.

Don’t think you have to worry about F-Mart, FWICG, M’s need ML ready pitching, C and 1B. They already have good OFers.

I think Evan Roberts said today that the Mets believe they can get Lee without giving up Mejia, Niese or Davis. I believe he mentioned prospects like Thole Flores and Fmart.
I think everyone has their preferences of players they don’t want to see gone but if we are talking about a 2 or 3 month rental for Lee then I would be hard pressed to veto a deal only because it included FMart.
I really don’t like hypothesizing on trades but depending on the combo of players I can’t honestly say I would be flat out opposed to trading FMart.

I really don’t understand you guys. If Beltran comes back productive and a trade is made for Lee, we have a legitimate opportunity to win the World Series for the first time in 24 years!! Why would you want to throw away such a chance all because you think Mejia might be good in a few years. Either way, he will never have thew impact on this team that Lee has the potential to this season. You never know, Mejia may never be good. Why would you throw away your chances of winning the World Series for a pitcher who has proved nothing and may not ever be good.

I think you need to weigh the fact that Lee is a rental therefore exactly what you give up for a shot at winning this season has to be weighed.
I mean if the Mariners ask for Mejia for Lee straight up that may be more enticing than a Mejia plus 2 more prospects for Lee.
No matter what anyone says here as to why the Mets should or shouldn’t trade player x-y-z for Lee you can be sure that once and if a deal is done they will be all for it so long as Lee gets them to a World Series.

Hey, it’s great that you know what we all will say!
Don’t fall off that high horse, might really hurt when you finally hit the ground!

Clearly you are either reading way too much into it or just having some fun.
In any event check back with me “IF” the Mets make the Fall Classic with the addition of Lee so I can then do a poll to see how many would rather not have the Mets in the W.S. because Lee helped them get there?

Definitely having some fun!
Every day, with the way we are playing and the future so bright that I need serious sunglasses in my cozy corner.
Hey, I want another WS as bad as anyone. I hate that my Dad has 1969 and 1986 and I have just 86, and the younger folks have no titles and have the stinkin Yanks to compare us to.
You, once again, make a very interesting and thought-provoking point here—will we mortgage the future to try to win this year?
Tough question, sincerely.
But I honestly feel that Mejia can be a really good MLB starter.
If Lee comes here and leads us to a pennant then goes away, and we are left with no Lee, no Mejia, and just draft picks (which, yes, could result in David Wright or Ike Davis) will it have been worth it?
I honestly don’t know.
I truly can see this team can be a pennant contender for years with the foundation we have.

Don’t think of it as mortgaging the future but rather a small loan for that needed heater.

If Beltran comes back productive?
When? Next June?
You know how many guys there are at age 20 with Mejia’s speed, movement, poise, and attitude?
Thanks heavens some people do.

And in 1-2 years, Ike and Niese and Pelf will be infinitely better….Reyes will be fully back to the 2005-2008 Jose….it is reasonable to expect that AT LEAST 1-2 of Mejia/FMart/Thole/Havens/etc will be good to very good major leaguers.
And Wright will be Wright and Bay will be Bay.
And we will clearly have at least one more big money player as Omar adds one every year.
The idea that 2010 is our last best chance to win simply does not conform to an objective appraisal of this organization right now.

I want you to understand that in no way am I saying that what you say will not happen.
I just want to add that no one can know with any certainty what the future holds. I mean there is just as much a chance that everyone you mentioned is a bust or gets hurt as they are of having a good career.
The point being that when a season comes along where you are possibly 1 or 2 players away from having a legitimate shot at going to the W.S. the team has to seriously weigh if they can make a move to get that player or players that may get them that W.S. Ring.
Don’t take that to mean you trade the farm ok just that if you truly believe a player can be the piece that gets you a real shot at a ring you have to consider it.

that is exactly when the smart move is to go for the rental.
and also the reason you have to collect in the first place, then hoard, as many good quality prospects as possible, so you have the volume to pick from.

Mr N–
Well said and excellent points all around.
This debate in particular is a truly outstanding one, with no clear answer on either side.
In other words, what TRDMB is for!!

can’t count on Reyes doing it for the Mets in 2 years, since that will be the 1st year of his big FA deal.
and if we are lucky, in 2 years (2012 season) 1 of those 4 guys will be a capable, everyday ML level player.

I really don’t think that Mejia is much to give up for someone who can take us deep into October.

I agree with you in general about the “one more big money player” but I do have some fear that next year will be the year that doesn’t happen and that fear is based on:
Santana getting a $1.5 mil raise;
Wright getting a $3 mil raise;
Reyes (unless he is bought out) getting a $1.625 mil raise;
Bay getting a $9.5 mil raise;
Francoeur (if retained, is ARB 3) getting a raise from his current $5 mil;
Feliciano (if retained, is a FA) getting a raise from his current $2.9 mil;
Pagan (if retained, is ARB 3) getting a raise from his curretn $1.45 mil;
Igarashi getting a $500,000 raise;
Pelfrey going to ARB 1 for a raise;
I don’t have a clue what the arbitration raises might be, those aside Santana Wright Reyes & Bay come to a $15.625 mil increase in payroll in 2011. It’s this type of stuff that makes me covet Lee as a rental because if you throw Oswalt on there before the ARB guys we’re talking a $31.625 mil payroll increase in 2011 and I question the likelihood of that.
stickguy
6/23/2010-4:51pm at 4:51 pm (UTC -4)
payroll is still down however from last year, since they still haven’t spent the payroll $ they saved not getting Molina & pinera, which in theory was held in reserve for the big mid-season pickup.
And probably the only comment I will make today without getting dumped on is that there is a zero% change (short of a catastrophic, career ending injury) that Reyes has his option declined.
A fiscally smart team also tries to lose the 7+ (or whatever it comes out to be) salary for Frenchy next year.
Oh, and you will be dropping ~3mill non-tendering Maine. Him and frenchy probably offset a good 10mill of your 32.
Omar does love to backload those contracts though, doesn’t he?
But at least it is a 1 year bump. after 2011, castillo, beltran and Ollie are gone, which is 36mill+ right there.

6/23/2010-4:55pm at 4:55 pm (UTC -4)
You hit on the reasons that while I question the likelihood of a bigtime acquisition I won’t insist it’s impossible: This year they are down $23 million from last year and because of the 2012 contracts you note ending it is as you say a “one year bump.”
Post season dollars from 2010 will help offset or make easier to swallow that bump. The possibility of Beltran showing enough this season and being willing to waive his no-trade for a possible trade this off season helps too, but who can say if either of those things will happen?

6/23/2010-4:54pm at 4:54 pm (UTC -4)
going back to the title of this post, I can’t understand why the Mariners would be trading him this week, unless they were presented with an offer so damned good (and a take it or leave it before we make another move conditian to it) that they had to jump.
And if that happened, he would not be starting tonight for the Ms.
do they actually think they won’t get better offers in the next 3-4 weeks?
and the last reprot about the team said they weren’t yet giving up getitng back in the race. I think that was just PR BS, but it certainly did not support the idea of dumping their best player.

Lee thru 4 still looking good.
They just showed his k/bb ratio and if I am not mistaken it was like 17.4 but in B.A. it says 16.75 in any case very very impressive.
