Last nights game was a laughter that almost turned into a crier. After a 58 minute rain delay in which the Mets led Ace Pitcher, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers 3-0, the Mets exploded for eight runs in the top of the third inning – a inning that would see 14 Mets come to the plate. Jose Reyes, Angel Pagan and David Wright combined for 10 hits, nine runs scored and seven RBI ! But unfortunately Jonathan Neise wasn’t as sharp, surrendering 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. I was actually surprised that Jerry Manuel actually Left Niese in after such a long rain delay, risking a potential injury. And Niese’s performance was night and day. Niese was sharp over the first few innings, but after the rain , he was wild – hitting a batter, and the Tigers had no problem hitting him. Fernando Nieve came in to pitch 2 1/3 innings , giving up one run (credited to Niese) but other than that he was flawless. The recently promoted Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless eighth , while Ryota Irigashi pitched a perfect ninth which sealed the win for the Mets, putting them back within a game and a half of the division leading Atlanta Braves.
With his two r.b.i’s last night, David Wright has moved past the legendary Ed Kranepool and for sole possession of fourth place on the Mets all time rbi list. Next up is Howard Johnson is third on the list with 629 RBI.
And for all the critics from last season that said the Mets farm system is barren, Yesterday Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the 2010 XM All-Star Futures
Game to be played at Angels Stadium on July 11th. Representing the New York Mets will be minor league pitcher, Jeurys Familia as a member of the world team roster.
It’s great to hear that Carlos Beltran will begin his minor league rehabilitation assignment on Thursday with the St. Lucie Mets (A)of the Florida State League. Can you imagine what kind of juggernaut of a batting order we will have upon his return !!

Pitcher from the ’94 team,Juan Castillo is 40 (1970) .
Sadly on this date, a true Mets original , ” Mahhhvelous” Marv Throneberry passed away (1994) .
New York Mets signed free agent outfielder,Jerry Morales on June 23, 1966.
And the Mo Vaughn tidbit of the day – He is preparing himself for the Nathan’s annual Fourth Of July hot dog eating contest by eating as many hot dogs he can in a 20 minute sitting. So far he is downing 50 of the wieners in the allotted amount of time !!

I commented during the rain delay, I’d error on the side of caution and not bring Niese back out….Jerry said on post game last night his ‘book’ is 50 pitches, an hour – to pull a pitcher.
Niese had 45 pitches and he sat for 90 minutes. It wasn’t the pitch count, per say but the 90 minutes. Bobby O said his arm should have been fine, it was more a mental thing with the big lead he had. I’ll give him a pass as he’s a rookie. We got a chance to see what Nieve, Iggy and Parnell could do. If Iggy and Parnell continue to look sharp, we could have a hell of a BP.

yeah, I’m not sure how 90 minutes was less than an hour. Once they got the lead so solid probably shouldn’t have bothered bringing him back. helps keep innings total down too.

I’m surprised warthern & the trainers allowed it – especially since he had that hammy injury a month ago

And Yikes…that play Niese made going for the ball sliding across the wet infield could have been a disaster. Thankfully, it wasn’t…

I understand wanting to get Niese the win, but what you want and what is needed are not always one in the same. You just dust off the cob webs of the ghosts of the bullpen, AKA Nieve and other doghouse residents and let them flake the rust off. No sense in risking a rookie to injury.

Yeah, that extra couple of innings he pitched could mean he might be too tired to pitch in September.
Anyone have any examples of a pitcher who got hurt after resuming pitching after a rain delay?

no, put very few ever do come back after that big of a gap.

Well that big of a gap does not happen often BUT it does happen frequently where managers bring back the guy after a rain delay. Again, gray area. I would not have brought him back but not a big deal that he did.

Hey Rusty, Sorry I doubted you!
I just double checked Jerry Morales
and to my surprise he was indeed an original Met draft pick. I remembered
him as our CFer in 1980, never realized we had drafted him.
I think Jerry leaving Niese in last night is much to do ’bout nothin’.
And who knows, if they’d have to gone to the pen after the delay, maybe the
Tigers come out and score a couple, three runs and its a different
game.I’m actually glad to see one of our SPers get a win when not pitching
well and giving up alot of runs.

1 out short of a win; came out w/2 outs in the 5th.
And much ado about nothing is right.
A young pitcher sat for an hour on a warm night.
Big deal.

But Stick, my most respected co-pilot, is there ANY evidence that pitchers get hurt that way? Especially young guys sitting for one hour on a hot, humid night?
The lengths to which people are going to criticize this team–in the midst of the great ball they are playing–is going from mystifying to outright ridiculous.

is there any evidence that throwing 130 pitches is harmful? Coming out of the bullpen without warming up (I could see this one, easily)? Throwing 200IP+ as a rookie?
The chances of injury are extremely low, but that doesn’t mean you don’t take precautions.
even in regular weight-lifting type exercising. It’s not really adviced to lift for an hour, take a break, cool down, get a drink, watch soem tv, and then go back and lift with the same muscles.
It’s the same thing. Too long and Nieses arm cools off ,and needs that many more pitches to either keep warm/loose or to re-loosen, which while it doesn’t count towards the pitch count, does count towards arm fatigue (as does warming up in the bullpen, something Manuel still doesn’t understand.)
Also, there is the idea that you don’t have a rookie pitcher step up his total innings count in a season too far. This is still a theory, but it’s fairly common. Likely the Mets would prefer Niese not throw 200 innings, and you save 2-3 by not putting him back out there. A couple here, and a couple there, and maybe we don’t have to worry about it later.

I get tired of spending most games arguing points sometimes.
Actually, I nixed going to the game because of the rain, and went to see Toy Story instead. Movie started after they pulled the rookie, so I was pretty set not seeing the rest.

stickguy
6/23/2010-10:27am at 10:27 am (UTC -4)
so, a rookie that you probably have to worry about innings load, have him throw simulated innings every 15 minutes to keep his arm loose?
He threw 82 “official” pitches last night I think. How many more warm up and stay loose ones did he throw on top of it?
trs86
6/23/2010-10:31am at 10:31 am (UTC -4)
No idea. I know he was on the bike staying warm too so it’s not just like he threw the entire time.
Again, I am assuming that MLB trainers, managers, pc, etc know how to keep a guy warm and avoid injury better than we do.

I certainly don’t have access to that data.
But how about this. After coming back, he was dismal in the 4th, and obviously had lost what he had.
The 5th started out even worse, and never improved.
Jerry had to wait until he had put on 9 baserunners, and given up 6 runs (and being 1 Johan moment from being a nail biter), to decide that maybe it had been a bad decision? Just tyring to get a win for a guy?
I just prefer taking the big picture look at the season. ANd with a roolie, who had major surgery last year, and is 4 starts back from reinjuring that hammy, it just seemed to me that a safe, reasonable, prudent decision was to have Neise hit the showers and not take any chances. Odds are, even the Met pen would be able to hold the lead!
Oh, the pen that also has guys that admittedly needed work that Jerry could not find for them! Talk about a perfect opportunity.
Did it end up OK? Seems to. But at the time, I was in serious disagreement with your BFF on what he did.

6/23/2010-10:28am at 10:28 am (UTC -4)
Wait they had scored 6 before he came out? He gave up 6 runs total. I think Nieve let one of those in.
Fine that you did not agree but it’s not as clear cut as you are making it out to be and usually is not. That’s what makes baseball great, so much gray area.
