Post Game: Almost Famous

almost2

The Mets just missed beating almost famous Armando Galarraga and the Detroit Tigers. Hisanori Takahashi was tasked with sweeping the broom over one of the better offenses in the AL but was not sharp from the get go. Hisanori gave up a walk to the leadoff man Austin Jackson in the 1st, followed by a Ryan Raybourn single to put runner on 1st and 2nd with no one out. Takahashi managed to strike out Magglio Ordonez but Jackson stole 3rd and Raybourn stole 2nd. Big boy Miguel Cabrera hit a sac fly to put the Tigers up by one. Taka retired Boesch to end the inning but that pretty much was Hisanori’s night tonight.

Almost...

Almost...

Armando Galarraga held the Mets scoreless until the 4th inning. Jesus Feliciano doubled to give the Mets their first hit of the game(and taking away the no hitter). David Wright singled to move Jesus over to third and Ike Davis got him in via a double play out. Jason Bay would walk but Jeff Francoeur made the last out to end the inning and leave the game 3-1. Hisanori Takahashi felt bad for the Tigers and let up a home run to Ryan Rayburn to open the very next frame. Ordonez and Cabrera would single after that to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out, Takahashi would go out with a bang by loading the bases on a walk to Boesch. Elmer Dessens was tasked with getting out of a bases loaded 0 out situation…by the end of the inning, the Tigers were up 6-1.

DONT TREAD ON ME

DONT TREAD ON ME

The Mets showed that fight and fire that has made alot of us begin to forget about 2009. With the Mets down 6-1, Galarraga let up a walk to Jose Reyes to start the 6th. Jesus Feliciano singled to put runners on the corners with no one out. David Wright doubled to score Reyes and move Feliciano to third. Ike Davis grounded out to score Jesus Feliciano and Jason Bay singled to score David Wright. Jason Bay however, tried to take 2nd on a ball that barely got away from Laird…he was unsuccessful. Alex Cora flied out to end the rally but the Mets pulled closer at 6-4. Mets got on their rally horse the very next inning. Blanco struck out but Ruben Tejada took one for the team and got on base. On a past ball, Tejada took second and Chris Carter came through with a single to score Tejada. Jose and Jesus singled to have the bases loaded with 1 out and David Wright up at the plate. David however, struck out and Ike Davis flied out to center but the Mets pulled within one run…ONE RUN from being down 6-1.

HIGH HEAT

HIGH HEAT

Joel Zumaya would bring his super fast fastball to the Mets in the 8th. Joel got Jason Bay to fly out on a deep shot to right. Fernando Tatis grounded out on the first pitch(this guy is useless) but  Blanco and Tejada managed to hit a single off Zumaya. With a runner in scoring position and the Mets down one run, Chris Carter came up and put up a good at bat but ended up flying out to end the inning. Unfortunatly, Jose Valverde came in and took out the top of the lineup in a 1-2-3 fashion to deny the Mets a hard worked come back. Even though a loss sucks and we missed a shot to be in first place, this team showed some guts that were no where to be found last year. This team has a hellova lot of fight…

So the Mets Jesus Feliciano had his 4th start since being called up and went 3 for 5 with a double. Looks like the early (and I do mean early) numbers suggest he seems to like starting as opposed to coming from the bench. I know he has only had 4 ab’s off the bench but if he is going to be of help he’d better get some hits off the bench when called upon while he still can. Because with Beltran on the way back his days are numbered.

On the game well Taka struggled and you wonder if this expedites the Mets desire to get a starter so they can put Taka back in the pen.

Give the Mets credit for cutting the lead to 1 and the pen holding them at 6 runs.

What went through Bay’s head when he stopped running between 1st and 2nd only to get thrown out at 2nd? It was probably his 1st mental flub as a Met. Give him a mulligan.

Can someone explain the double switch with Carter coming in to play RF and Frenchy coming out? I still don’t understand that one.

Welcome back Parnell. Long Live The Heat.

Mets took 2 out of 3 and fail to take 1st place but they will get another shot tomorrow.

geez NJ, it is only 4 ABs as a sub! at least let him get to double digits.

I was not watching until late in the game. I could not understand Jerry doing the double switch. I assumed Frenchy got hurt, given how little Jerry thinks of Carter in the field.

      1. Mr North Jersey

I believe a did say “Looks like the early (and I do mean early) numbers”.

I only bring it up as his clock is ticking and time is of the essence if he wants to show he can hit off the bench. Once Tran gets back he will most likely get da boot.

I didn’t read anything suggesting Frenchy being hurt but I will monitor and hope that is not true.

        1. stickguy

unless a total shock (to me) trade of pagan happens, jesus has to go. Unless they think he can add more value off the bench than Carter? I still think jesus is odd man out.

Now, if he hit RH and could stand at a spot in the IF, tatis might have to look over his shoulder!

I think the double switch was mostly to avoid the possibility of having to pinch hit for Dessens after only 1 inning of work. 7-8-9 were due up the next inning.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Did Dessens pitch the next inning?

        1. stickguy

he pitched two. Then jerry ran iggy and parnell for 1 each, then oogied pedro and neive. Mean Pedro had to pitch until K rod did, and if this game kept going, into the rotation way too early.

    [OFF TOPIC]
“That’s home for him,” Manuel said, referring to the leadoff spot. “I was trying to take him out of his home, trying to take him somewhere else. He was in a little house. I was trying to get him to a castle.”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/25/sports/baseball/25citifield.html

You see things like this quote from Jerry leaves me asking myself why? Why, even if it’s true say something that will be portrayed as suggesting Reyes is complacent?

What purpose does it serve saying he wanted to move Reyes from a little house to a castle?

When they approach Reyes and tell him Jerry said he wanted to take Reyes from a lil house to a castle you have to hope Reyes doesn’t take it negatively.

Hopefully I am just reading more into it than it deserves but sometimes I just wonder what is Jerry trying to accomplish with some of his comments.

    1. stickguy

jerry just babbles. I doubt he evens knows (or pays attention to) what he is saying.

    2. CaseStreet

Jerry likes to communicate with his players through the media. Tough love or challenging his players or some crap.

        That’s ludacrisp. I guess I’ll just fade into Bolivian…

  4. stickguy

didn’t see the beginning of the game. Seems like a good part to have missed. So, my random thoughts:

    1) wright looked totally like he was pressing with the bases juiced. He got himself out. a bit of a gag job there vs, a lefty. Not that he is required to get a hit or RBI every time, but he looked terrible there. The pitcher did not look good, throwing 4 straight balls.

    2) The pen was excellent. the new parnell looks very nice, as does the revitalized Iggy. this group of 6, right now, looks solid and could be a force. Just need that 2nd lefty back.

    3) Jerry still does not understand pen management. It would have gotten very ugly, very quick, if they had tied the game and gone to extras. when you pull a guy early, you need to double up more (especially with a 6 man pen). And scrap the OOGYing when the pen is down to 1 guy left!

    4) take 2-3 from the Twinkies, and get back in 1st place. a couple of hours being tied? You know what that was like.

    1. stickguy

forgot #5) I think the mets all along (without saying it), were hoping to push taka back in the pen. I know he has been generally good in the rotation, but I wonder if he will be able to keep up the pace (and I suspect the Mets are too).

Imagine this same team, but with Taka back as the 7th man in the pen, if they can add another SP that is as good as he is overall (or ideally, better!).

Team would be running out of holes to fill.

      1. ceetar

I suspect Maine will somehow find his way back.. but maybe not since he didn’t start today on his day? I suspect he’d be competitive, but it’s hard to judge.

        1. stickguy

well, looks like with the tendonitis diagnosis, he is shut back down (back on the DL), so the 30 day clock on the rehab assignment get reset. Could easily be a few weeks rest, then some rehabbing, before another MiL stint of games. Likely won’t even be back in time for the trade deadline?

        2. stickguy

          and don’t even mention Ollie!

          1. ceetar

no one has, except he pitched to beltran the other day. Perez could be a solid piece if they could refine his delivery. I still think 8 starts (adnd 2-3 of them good ones) was too few to just give up on the guy.

          2. stickguy

well, the fans gave up on the guy.

But I don’t think the mets ever officially did. Otherwise, they would have DFA’d him.

          3. njstuckintx

I hope we aren’t judging Beltran’s progression off of him hitting pitches from Ollie. Most people can do that these days… :P

      2. GravediggerHebner

Taka back to the pen answers # 2.

        1. stickguy

2 bonus points to you hebs for paying attention.

        2. oleosmirf

and who starts? No-one we have inside the organization gives us better numbers as a SP which is a heck of a lot more important than being the 2nd lefty in the pen.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Like Case was saying yesterday… they have 2 former 15 game winners…

  5. oleosmirf

here are some very polarizing stats.

David Wright is 6 for 41 (.146) with 24 Ks in late and close situations. He was .244 in those situations last season.

Compare that to 2006 and 2007 where he batted .348 and .347 respectively in the same late and close situations.

    1. ceetar

he’s pressing. the pressure on him is to pretty much carry the team.

That said, he’ll come around. This team is borderline scary good really.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Agreed. Bay has to bear the largest responsibility for that pressure on Wright IMO.

      2. stickguy

maybe it was last year. and early this year. But how could he feel like that the way they have been playing lately? especially when any run completes the comeback from a 5 run deficit!

But I do think he is gripping the bat a bit too hard in those spots, instead of letting the pitcher dig a bigger hole, and letting the next guy continue the hit parade.

maybe if bay gets hot at some point, david will relax?

    2. CaseStreet

With delgado and beltran hitting behind you, you’d probably get better pitches or not feel the need to press. Davis and bay have been okay, but they’re not Carlos and Carlos circa 2006

      1. oleosmirf

well if that were the case,Wright would be struggling every inning not just after the 7th…

        1. GravediggerHebner

Not necessarily, the “late & close” situation applies to the pitcher too. Knowing Delgado & Beltran were coming up next those years the pitcher had fewer options.

With Davis a decent rookie but just that really, and with Bay being so woefully underwhelming it’s twofold because pitchers don’t have to throw hittable pitches to Wright while simultaneously he is in the position of knowing he should just take the walk the pitchers are trying to give him but if he does that the guys behind him aren’t likely to do their jobs like Delgado & Beltran were so he swings at bad pitches.

He needs help that he’s not getting and the big finger points at Bay on that.

          1. stickguy

but, that is a huge part of situational hitting.

every kid in LL learned that with bases loaded, a walk is as good as a hit! Well, at least a win is a run.

if he is going to consistently get himself out in those spots, he really is more suited to the 5 hole.

  6. CaseStreet

Tatis mustve been reading a good magazine that he swung at the first pitch. What happened to this guy? Joe might have to build another box for tatis.

    1. ceetar

what happened to him? he sucks..i’m not sure anything happened to him.

      1. stickguy

I know real still likes him, but he is looking real old right now. The forgotten man?

Not saying they have an obvious alternative at the moment, but he really isn’t doing much to earn his keep.

THinking slightly out of the box, if slappy does come back, while Tejada is still playing well, dumping Tatis to keep the kid is an option. But again, like sending down carter and keeping Jesus, it does take any power off the bench.

  7. CaseStreet

Okay, why no post on thole being called up?

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Don’t you have author rights?

      1. CaseStreet

I get home after the games, you guys are my eyes and ears.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Well 16 authors are really 11 and those 11, you included, have lives?

I don’t really have a life but I just joined twitter last night so I’m preoccupied with that.

As an attempt to make up for that here’s a link to some video of Beltran hitting that was tweeted!
