This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Tigers Can’t Grasp The Dickey !” Edition 06-24-10

I know, I know just when you thought I was running on empty with R.A Dickey puns I come out with a new one that will make your eyes roll with boredom. I wish that I could say that I was able to watch that gem of a game . but unfortunately I had the opportunity to make some extra overtime at my day job , and of course the E.R that I was patrolling didn’t have SNY (BASTARDS !!).So I relied on my trusty I-Phone with the MLB at bat app and got a sketchy overview of how the Mets did with Sports-night filling in the holes of my imagination when I got home. I know I have said it before , but I will say it again – Damn I was wrong about Dickey !! This doesn’t mean that I think the Mets should sign him to a three year contract, but for a team that was struggling with Maine and Ollie, it turns out that Dickey was as close to the perfect option that we had at the time. I understand that Francisco Rodriguez hadn’t pitched since last Friday, but come on Jerry ! Dickey – as a journeyman deserved to go for the complete game shutout !! It should also be noted that R.A. Dickey is the first Mets pitcher to go 6-0 in his first seven starts with the team. It should also be mentioned that Dickey has allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of his seven starts…He retired the final 13 batters he faced.
Our Mets are is 34-13 when scoring first. ( sounds like shades of ’06 to me doesn’t it !?!).
Jose Reyes is on fire ! He has scored at least one run in 11 of his last 14 games. During those 14 games, he’s scored 18
runs, So far this season the Mets are 28-7 when Reyes scores at least one run and 6-3 when he scores two or more runs, and for his career, the Mets are 132-33 when he scores a run and drives in a run. That is just sick !!
David Wright is the leads all players with 19 RBI during Inter-league play with his RBI last night.

” Never under estimate the power of the Dickey !!”

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to fifth starter from the ”78 team, Mike Bruhert (1951) .He would later be part of the deal that would bring a faded Dock Ellis to the Mets.

New York Mets traded minor league outfielder, Al Yates to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher, Dennis Bennett on June 24, 1967.

And Mo Vaughn was rushed to Jamaica hospital from a overdose – OF NATHAN’S HOTDOGS !!! It seems like our Mo pushed himself way to hard while training for the annual Nathan’s 4th Of July hotdog eating contest !! Get well soon Mo !

I think Dickster will go 21-0

    1. rustyjr

      That’s a pretty stiff prediction :-p

      1. metsfan4decades

        hahaha

  2. metsfan4decades

I love when Dickey is pitching. You never know what you’re gonna see, in a good way – unlike you never knew what you were gonna see with Ollie.

Loved the guest appearance by Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry’s right – SNY has the best booth in baseball.

Love this team, love these young players, love the ‘veteran’ finds Omar came up with in Dickey and Taka.

    LGM!

    1. Hazmet

Here’s to hoping the Mets Dickey does not experience any shrinkage. :)

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Yes, when Jerry (not Manuel) said that about GKR, I was nodding my head too.

Oh the joy of winning cures all…

I’m almost wondering whether Lady Gaga using Seinfeld’s box made last night’s appearance happen.

      1. CaseStreet

        probably right

  3. ceetar

that 19 interleague RBI also is tied with Piazza for tops as a Met.

  4. CaseStreet

Pretty crazy how they haven’t been able to touch our dickey. Newman shouldve left r.a. To complete the game, it wasn’t even a save situation and krod could get his work in some other time. Really hope pagan is okay, I’d hate for him to hit the DL again after he finally seems to have hit his stride as a starter. Plus, Reyes and pagan have been one of the best 1-2 combinations in the game, Especially at home.

    1. Hazmet

K-Rod’s starting to irk me with his “I need to know who the eighth inning guy is” and showing up on any given day saying I gotta get work today. I’ve heard that from other guy’s only to have them come back in August and ask “why was I used in a 5-0 game in June”.

I know he needs his work, I get it. But it took a special moment away from a journeyman Pitcher earning a renaissaince on his career. Jeez K-Rod could you just show up and pitch without the drama.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, I’m starting to wonder if Jerry caters to KRod just a bit. I understand the need for not being rusty, especially with the closer but if that’s the case, wonder why he didn’t pitch the 9th in the blowout game two nights ago?

RA should have been given the chance the CG. Just like Niese was given the chance for the win the night before – which he blew.

        1. trs86

I am sure Jerry caters to Krod, Johan, Wright, Reyes and Beltran. All managers and coaches from rec league up cater to their stars.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I agree. And also I’m thinking Jerry is catering to KRod to get the vesting option kicked in 2012.

          2. njstuckintx

You think Jerry’s getting a kicker for that from Krod and Cora? :-O Conspiracy theories abound!

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

Probably not, but if I were a manager, I’d also try to get my players’ options picked up. Unless your name is Church, Maine or Castro.

          4. fongy2

Yeah, too bad we missed out on the greatness of Ryan Church and the rapist Ramon Castro!

          5. njstuckintx

That’s ok, we get the rapist Johan! kidding kidding. That claim was never consummated…

  5. CaseStreet

Just heard Ron hunt say the key to turning a double play is to give them something loose, not a stiff leg. Unfortunately, Murphy had to learn that the hard way.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Is Ron Hunt related to Mike Hunt?

      1. njstuckintx

        Any relation to Oliver Clothesoff?

        1. GravediggerHebner

Completely serious here: when I was in 4th grade a classmate of mine was a German albino girl whose name was Ophelia Dicht.

The name, or being an albino in 4th grade, would be difficult enough, but the combination, wow!

          1. gategem

You recall the names of your 4th grade classmates? You must be young.

Dickey credits his latest mound success to the daily use of Viagra.

I’ve decided to nickname him “Dickey Bird.” lol

  6. njstuckintx

He just keeps on cruising. I must say, I keep waiting for the bubble to burst on RA, but he just keeps on keepin’ on.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

You waiting for Dickey to burst? Not gonna happen.. he keeps on going and going and going and going and …..

      1. njstuckintx

        The Energizer Dickey.

  7. DNDJohan aka kistics

It would suck to have Bobby V manage the Fishes… though they’ll still be 4th place team.

And looks like Rollins came off the DL and hit a walk-off HR last night. I look forward to the Mets pitchers throwing at his calf…. I hope Rollins coming back doesn’t spark fire in their offense…

But then their pitching stinks except for Halladay

  8. DNDJohan aka kistics

Reyes has been incredibly hot. I mean no one can get him out!

KHer really doesn’t like Reyes though….

    1. CaseStreet

KH is a cry baby. It’s like he forgets what it was like to be a player.

  9. fongy2

Still waiting on JBay to explode!
We are quickly approaching the half-way mark, end of June and the Allstar
break and he sits at 4HR/29RBI…..
Also, I couldn’t believe how many
    baseball people I heard yesterday
on the MLB network, ESPN, the Nats
broadcast AND Sutcliffe on the Met-
Tiger game say Strasburg should be
    on the Allstar team.
By that way of thinking, shouldn’t Dickey get that spot first???
AND as a big Bobby V. fan,I really hope he doesn’t take the Marlin job.

    1. njstuckintx

From a marketing viewpoint, yes, it makes sense to send Stras to the AS game. From a baseball perspective, there’s no way he should go. I dislike how all the “names” make the game and the players who deserve to go don’t, but whatever, the system is as it is.

And if I were the Nats, I’d make sure he pitched on the Sunday prior to the AS break to make sure he doesn’t go. If they are on a strict inning limit with him (as I hear they are), why would I want any other manager having any say over when/where “my precious” is thowing pitches?

      1. fongy2

        I think its absurd.
        What marketing?
The game will be sold out, there will be no significant up-tic in
TV ratings and he’d pitch ONE inning.
I started hearing this yesterday morning….
After he’d pitched THREE games in the majors!…How many hundreds of players have had TWO great weeks in MLB???
        THAT deserves an Allstar appearance??

        1. ceetar

it’s more than that. it’s name recognition, it’s talking about the game, establishing history, adding to players resume with makes them more marketable, and of course, t-shirt sales! You know how many DCers will buy National Strasburg shirts that wouldn’t have bought all-star gear otherwise?

        2. njstuckintx

The dude gets Nats games on national television and gets a pirates/Nats game to see out. Yeah, the actual stadium will be sold out with/without him, but TV ratings would jump, absolutely.

And I agree with you, I don’t think he should go. What I am saying, though, is that I’m sure him getting picked is something that has come across the vacant space between cyborg selig’s ears. If it does happen, I wouldn’t be surprised. Disappointed, yes. Surprised, no.

          1. fongy2

            Well, I
            will say
he gets me to watch Nat-Pirate&
            Nat-Royal games.
I get you completely BUT I
think the notion of him taking a spot
away from some other player is just
            wromg.

          2. njstuckintx

As limp bizkit once said, “we are in agreeance”.

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

we all agree that the AS system is a joke now. it’s a popularity contest. if Jessica Alba is on the ballot, she’ll probably be starting AS game.

          4. njstuckintx

Would she be manning the hot corner?

Or patrolling the Centerfold, err. Centerfield?

I need more coffee and less corny jokes, that’s for sure.

          5. DNDJohan aka kistics

No she would be receiving.. uhhh catching Dickey….

        3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I agree. But Ceetar is right. There’s the name recognition, more Strassburg NL AS jersey sale, etc etc… I bet his appearance alone would bring $1-2M more in revenue.

      2. ceetar

I don’t think they walk the line between marketing and ‘deserved’ well enough with the All-Star game. I do believe the “names” should get to go, after all, that’s why they’re “names” People want to see Albert Pujols, even if he has a poor first half.

And young-uns should definitely get to go too. Strasburg hasn’t been here long enough, but guys like Heyward and Pelf. Sorta bridge the gap between the “stars of the game” and the “challengers” It’s the middling guys that are having career years but aren’t really that good that are mostly uninteresting. Do you think anyone outside of NY really cares about Dickey?

        1. stickguy

it is the “all star” game, not the “best numbers for the 1st 2 months, depending on how you interpret them” game.

      3. DNDJohan aka kistics

well.. AS game is a popularity contest. You can clearly see this from Placebo getting more votes than Wright or Rollins is #2 behind Hanley or AGonz isn’t even on top 5…

The voting system has become a joke. Having said that I’m gonna vote some more for the Mets. LOL

      4. DNDJohan aka kistics

More joke on AS voting system is that Murphy is on the ballot as the Mets 1B and Ike is not. Beltran is on and Pagan is not.

I’m not sure who’s the administer of this whole thing, but it shouldn’t be that hard to correct these things and keep up with current roster.

        Way to go Bud!

  10. DNDJohan aka kistics

Not sure if you guys caught the game, but what a soccer (or futball/football) game yesterday by the USA. We’ve all jumped into this soccer bandwagon (I don’t even know when MLS soccer starts/ends), but it was a heck of a game.

    1. ceetar

well, was at work anyway. As Jon Stewart said, if the US wins, the rest of the world has to call it soccer.

I think the Red Bulls (stupid name) played a game to start the season at the new Giants stadium.

I’m sure someone will let me know how the next game/round goes when we play.

    2. CaseStreet

Pretty exciting stuff. 91st minute goals to get you through the next round aren’t very common, especially in the world cup.
