Post Game: Twins Err on the Side of Losing

Oops!

Oops!

The Minnesota Twins made 2 errors in the 4th inning contributing to the New York Mets 5-2 victory over them tonight.  Jose Reyes led off with a single and moved to second base on an error by Twins starting pitcher Kevin Slowey (7-5).  A Jesus Feliciano sacrifice bunt moved Reyes to third base.  David Wright doubled to left driving in Reyes to tie the game.  Ike Davis singled to center moving Wright to third base.  On the play the center fielder Denard Span made a poor throw homeward and Wright came in to score on the error.  Davis then scored on a double by Jason Bay and the Mets led 3-1.

The Twin Span got the game started quickly hitting the second pitch from Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (10-2) into the seats for a 1-0 Twins lead.

After the error filled 4th the Twins cut the lead to 1 in the top of the 5th when Span grounded out to drive in Nick Punto and it was 3-2 Mets.  In the bottom of the 5th the Mets got that run right back.  Ruben Tejada extended his hitting streak to 9 games when he led the inning off with a double.  After Pelfrey sacrificed him to third base he scored on a sacrifice fly by Reyes making it 4-2 Mets after 5 innings.

Wright’s 13th home run of the season, 3 more than he hit all of last season, was a solo shot into the right field corner leading off the bottom of the 6th that gave the Mets a 5-2 lead.  Relievers Bobby Parnell and Pedro Feliciano each threw a 1-2-3 inning in support of starter Pelfrey then closer Francisco Rodriguez put his usual couple of runners on base before getting Delmon Young to ground out to third for the final out of his 17th save as the Mets held on for a 5-2 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins.

    11 Games over .500 again.

Santana on the Hill tomorrow on WPIX 11.

Hopefully we can get to 12 games over .500 this time.

NL East is getting really hot watch out.

1.5 ahead in the Wild Card.

4-3 in our 22 game death march leading to the break, with the Marlins and Nats coming up.

      On pace for 94 wins.

      Wow.

      1. stickguy

gotta say, so far the AL hasn’t put up much of a fight.

Hopefully I didn’t just Gary them for the next 2 games!

        1. Kingman 26

No chance; we have the mystical aura of the Jenius…..nothing to worry about my friend….

I hoped for 13-9 in our death stretch, and we are nearly through with maybe the three toughest teams, and we are 4-3.

          lol ;-)

117 PC through 6. Very good effort from Pelfrey keeping us in the game w/o his best stuff, especially early.

Mets play crisp baseball with great defense and heads up base running and the Twins just did not. Gave us the win despite some subs in the line up tonight. An all home grown infield though was pretty special.

Jerry on post game reports they went out to check on KRod b/c he had a problem with a back ‘twinge’ for one pitch. Said he had those back spasms last year and apparently has been dealing with a bit of a problem concerning his back this year as well. First I heard of that. And I’m not surprise. Back spasms – Speaking from experience, usually where there is smoke, there is fire. Here’s hoping it doesn’t get worse but something to think about for the future…

On to Johan for game two.

“Mets play crisp baseball with great defense and heads up base running”

Who the hell thought we would be saying this after last year?

It sure is fun to be a Mets fan.

    2. stickguy

wasn’t K Rod the one who got carried out on a stretcher after collapsing in the clubhouse last year?orwas that someone else whose back went?

Nice to see pelf hold it together for a win, but it would be comforting to see a game report that did not include the phrase “without his best stuff”

      1. CaseStreet

Yup, his back spasms get real bad. Better now than later.

  3. njstuckintx

I thought conjoined twins dug doubles. Odd…

  4. CaseStreet

11 games? Can we go 15 above?

    1. Kingman 26

      Yes we can!

If Parnell continues to look like this, and Taka goes to the pen after we get Lee….

Yikes. I almost feel sorry for the rest of the division. Almost.

As Mr N pointed out, 7 of 9 starters homegrown if you count Feliciano.

Our future is so bright, we will need those radiation suits, not just shades.

      1. stickguy

what the heck, bay was inthe minors for the mets before he came up, so call him homegrown too and go with 8.

        1. Kingman 26

          Holy crap, great point!

And it was simply the electricity radiated by the approaching Jenius which instantly healed KRod’s back.

          1. stickguy

now, you are starting to scare me.

          2. Kingman 26

            LOL!

I was kidding….working all night, enjoying Core vodka (made from Hudson Valley apples..mmmmm), and really just cannot believe how this team is playing.

But have to quote MF4D and again say who thought we’d be saying this this year: “Mets play crisp baseball with great defense and heads up base running.”

As Tug once said, Ya Gotta Believe.

I still say, regardless of how this team finishes 2010, we are a 100 win team in 2011.

          3. stickguy

might have to check out that local hooch. I will be up that way over the 4th weekend.

And really, no reason that they can’t be as good this year as next. they are well on their way.

the playing crisp ball this year? more to do with actually fielding a team of actual starting ballplayers. Bay is a pro’s pro (does everything right), as long as you aren’t looking for HR’s

And, i have said a number of times that Ike has been a blessing. A “real” 1B with that kind of glove made the entire defense better, especially the infield.

        2. CaseStreet

Pagan counts too as he was drafted by the mets

  5. CaseStreet

Saw zambranos explosion on derrek lee for not diving on a ball down the line. He’s been suspended and Lou basically said he doesn’t want him in the team.
I know the team has a special chemistry right now and Z’s fiery attitude could mess with Junius good vibes but I’d take a hard look at Z as a potential solution to our pitching need. I’m sure Johan and krod can keep z in check.

    1. stickguy

I am more worried about the talent at this point than the mental part.

so of course the speculation has begun.

would you do ollie for Big Z even up?

I think you add 1 year for about 20 million. But at least you gain another PH.

      1. stickguy

I actually went and looked up his stats.

he hasn’t been “great” since 2006. But for 2007-2009, he was very consistent. ERA+ of 117,118 and 119. Only real red flag was innings dropping each year (216, 188, 169).

Although I just watched the recap on sportscenter, and he seemed to have absolutely nothing. Not using his legs, no velocity, etc.

funniest part though, was the presser from Ozzie Guillen. he didn’t seem to think it was any big deal!

Zambrano seemed frustrated more than anything else.

      2. CaseStreet

Hmm, we only owe Ollie for another year and Z has 36m for next two years so there’d have to be some money coming our way. That said, his k rate is close to 9 and his babip is a ridiculous .370 partially caused by a high line drive rate, his fip is actually pretty decent. The concern for me would be his 4 + walk rate. He leaves a huge % of players on base. I think he gets hurt alot by pitching in wrigley. Alot of his fly balls would be outs in citi.

So, if we can do it for Ollie and some cash, I think it would be a good deal for us because it wouldn’t cost prospects, Ollie is useless to us, and Z should do better in citi and q better defense.

        1. stickguy

yeah, I noticed and forgot to mention that his K rate is higher than it has been since 2006 too.

The guys on BB tonight seem to think that he is suffering from not having good mechanics (too much arm, not enough legs). Although for a guy his size, that might be hard to change.

Now, if he want to go to boot camp, lose 4o pounds, and really learn how to mechanically fully use his talent, he could be really good again!

getting enough $ back to offset the cost of ollie and Z would be hard to pass up. Ollie is dead weight anyway, so how much worse could zambrano be?

Or, you could expand the deal. solid set up man? OF that could replace Pegan?

and yes, that pagan idea was in case they do trade him for Lee. Because if they could get Zambrano for “free”, then why not go for it all and get lee too?

          1. CaseStreet

well, we got Pagan from the Cubs so maybe they’d like to keep on giving. Though, that Pagan rumor has to be bs. No way Omar trades Pagan (a starter) when he’s been playing so well, and Beltran is no guarantee to stay off the DL. And, Seattle wants pitchers, catchers or 1B power hitter, they have OFers.

Considering that Z has a NTC, he really has them by the balls.

I’d also go for Lee anyway.

      3. oleosmirf

i wouldnt, not unless they eat that extra year…

  6. stickguy

    in other news:

Beltran was 2-3 with a walk and a double today. DH only, but making it to 2B is a good sign!

and Jackson with a NH? 50 years of great met pitching without one, and this craptastic guy throws one? 145 pitches and 8 walks sounds like Ollie.

actually, a lot of people said ollie would be the first met to do it, probably with about 8 walks though!
