Haven’t had enough about Beltran’s 1st rehab game? Well here is another video courtesy of TCPalm.com you may have not seen of Beltran sitting in the dugout in his St Lucie uniform before his 1st game talking about his expectations.

maybe today he will actually be able to make a play in the field, and run the bases!

    1. metsfan4decades

According to another interview I saw, the plan today is for Beltran to DH and play in the field next game about 7 innings or so….

  2. fongy2

    Well…Like everyone else,I’m hoping
and praying Beltran returns after the
    Allstar break…AND returns to form
quickly, because his bat is and will be needed! Now that Barajas has cooled off and appears to be returning
to norm AND with Frenchy being so damn
inconsistant AND with us looking like
we’re just gonna have to get used to
this new David Wright, another bat is
    clearly needed.
I’m a huge David Wright fan like most
BUT his AB with the bases loaded last night was painful! A left reliever in
the game, one out and again bases loaded…With a 2-0 count and Wright
swings at TWO pitches half a foot off
    the plate outside??..C’mon Dave!!….
Not to mention another bad night at
the plate for JBay….When are we gonna get one of those hot streaks TRS
talks about?? We’re almost at the half
way mark and Bay’s on course for an 8HR/60RBI season!!…Further, the numbers he has put up have been very
    Kevin McReynolds like…With a 4 run
lead or defecit…Or at least it seems
    that way…And getting caught b/t 1st
and 2nd last night??..Nice rally killer JBay!…Again, he should be buying lots of dinners for guys like
    Pagan,Barajas and Dickey because
    w/o them we’re somewhere b/t 31-41 and
    36-36
and he’d be getting sh*t-hammered by
Met fans, the media and maybe a few
    of his teammates!
    Lastly, Takahashi’s outting last night
confirms the need to bring in a SP…
he’s been mostly great BUT its foolish
to believe that he and Dickey will
con’t to be as good as they’ve been.
It would be nice, no doubt BUT no way
    you can count on it.

    1. stickguy

I have confidence that Dickey wil continue to be solid (not neccesarily this great, but extremely good for a #4/#5 guy). Plus, he tends to go deep into games.

I agree that they need 1 more solid to above average SP, moving Taka back into the pen.

    2. njstuckintx

Read both that the mets package to M’s would be Fmart, Thole, Familia and also read that the Twin’s will pull the trigger for Lee once Ramos is off the DL. Exciting times. But Lee or no Lee, A bigger named pitcher is definitely needed (Read: Oswalt-esque).

And I must say other than the whole losing thing yesterday, was anyone else concerned that we had feliciano (AKA the man who pitches to 1-2 men only) pitching the 8th and only man left in the pen was Krod. What if they actually tied it and went 12 innings… I love me some Jerry. :/

      1. stickguy

I commented on that yesterday. Jerry at his finest.

you would have had pedro PH for, then K rod for what, 2? So by the 11th, 12that at the altest, you would have had a SP in there.

Not sure any manager could back himself into that much of a corner that quick!

That should read, “Looking for the Kong to the Rescue comment should be coming soon”…

          2. stickguy

one of these days, Jerry will do something so monumentally stupid, that it will be like a wet mackeral hitting Knog across the face, waking him up from his Jerry kool-aid induced coma.

          3. njstuckintx

the fish guy and the swedish chef… great memories of the muppets!

          4. Kingman 26

Yes, while sitting and basking in the sun reflecting off of both of your MLB Manager of the Year trophies, go on and continue mocking Jerry while the team is playing its best ball in two years.

Great play on offense and defense, great fielding, great hustle, never-say-die comebacks all the time.

Yeah, I am quite sure the two of you could do a FAR better job.

            Questionable bullpen choice? Absolutely.

Trying to use the best arms to try to possibly win the game?
            Absolutely.

Overall a tiny blip on the continued road to success we are watching them truck down?
            Absolutely.

          5. njstuckintx

I applaud your focus on this. We do just jest with you. I hope jerry actually does win a Manager of the Year award, as that means good things for the Mets.

And, my snarky question to you: Did you get your Ray-Bans from Rosecolored Glassware Inc.?

            :)

          6. Mr North Jersey

Oh poor King, I hope I am not around when your bubble is burst.

That will be a sad thing to watch indeed.

It will be like watching a kid when he finds out their is no Santa Claus.

          7. Kingman 26

            WHAAAAAT??

            No Santa Claus??

            Bulls***!!!

          8. Kingman 26

And not nearly as sad as watching the armchair experts continue to desperately pick through the minutiae to find something to criticize during an incredible stretch of baseball.

          9. Mr North Jersey

            :-D
Speaking of armchairs here is one you can put in that corner of yours.

          10. Kingman 26

Mr N, in addition to your many other skills, you obviously have a gift for interior design…does that chair come in an orange-and-royal blue model?

          11. Mr North Jersey

LoL, No but this one goes so well with that corner lamp.

          12. DNDJohan aka kistics

Man things are very black and white with you King. You either like him or hate him. No in between… like me.. I take the easy way out…

          13. Kingman 26

Not really; not really at all.

I just always keep a very open mind, love to learn and improve my knowledge, and when I realize I have been wrong about something, I change.

Manuel, as I have never disputed, makes questionable bullpen decisions. He sometimes bunts too often as well (this has dramatically decreased as he has more confidence in his offense and pitchers).

But he simply must be given some credit for the amazing turnaround this year, for his flexibility with the lineup until finding one that works, and for the way he obviously handles players who apparently bust their butts for him.

When compared to the lackadaisical play we saw last year, he apparently did an outstanding job with fundies in the spring.

Just cannot see how anyone who watches most games can dispute this.

          14. DNDJohan aka kistics

I agree with you Kingman on what Jerry has done. But I still don’t like the fact that he just babbles too much with the media.

I mean again with Beltran thing.. Jerry said that Beltran might be available come Puerto Rico games.. WTF?? why would you say that if not to stir controversy and talks around the media.

I don’t like the fact that he jokes with the media at the expense of players he doesn’t like.

          15. stickguy

Knog, so easy to get you going these days!

          16. Kingman 26

            Not reayly Stkci.

Just love how the team is playing; have to give Jerry credit, that’s all.

Funny how you are here complaining about Jerry now, when you should have been with me in April when the team was playing poorly!

          17. stickguy

pretty sure that I was complaining about Jerry at the beginning too!

      2. stickguy

still seems like a lot for Omar to give up for a 1/2 year rental. F Mart is down a little right now, but still has the tools (and youth) to be a stud. Familia, who knows? just a live arm in A ball with control issues.

Thole though is the only viable ML catcher in the system though (I am not counting Santos at this point!). So that would be tough.

Does it make them better today? Sure. WIll it in hindsight be viewed as a disaster of a deal? Won’t know that for a while!

Just better hope that Lee is done with the injury issues for the year.

still, a rotation of Lee, Pelf, Santana, Dickey and Neise, while very lefty, certainly does seem strong enough to make a run at it!

and taka to the pen would be nice.

and best of all, you really could go LT with a 6 man pen, since that rotation is full of guys that have shown they can routinely go 7, even more, so 6 guys would have problems getting work.

        1. njstuckintx

I’ve been thinking on this as I was stuck in traffic and turned off talk radio (cause all they discuss is Should Texas have gone to the Pac 10 and you think the Rockets can do a sign and trade for Bosh… ick and ick.). If you are going to have a hole, per se, would it be better to have one in your rotation or in center field? AKA, would trading Pagan + something for Lee make the team better overall, factoring in the + for the Rotation and the – for the field/batting?

          1. metsfan4decades

Depends on what team this question is asked of. If it’s specifically the Mets, then with JBay still struggling, Wright a bit streaky, Franceour more than streaky, a 20 year old at second not noted for his offense and/or bat power and Ike just holding his own with a bat, then I don’t believe there is any way they can trade Pagan right now. His bat has basically been the one constant all year.

If they could look into the crystal ball and know Beltran would be back and be Beltran of old in a month, you could maybe do it. IMO though, I still wouldn’t include Pagan in the trade. I don’t think Seattle needs a CF anyway. Think they’ve got a young one who is just as good as Pagan, or projects to be.

      3. GravediggerHebner

Everyone either forgets or just disagrees with me that Dickey as a knuckle ball pitcher was Jerry’s ace in the hole there. I was not flabbergasted/offended/insulted/mortified by Jerry’s use of the bullpen yesterday. If anything I applauded the double switch when Dessens came in because it allowed Dessens to throw 2 innings instead of his spot coming up third in the lineup after he threw 1 inning.

        1. metsfan4decades

I for one, thought the same thing. Just commented below. I’m sure we would have been watching Dickey pitch had we tied and went into extra innings.

Jerry’s BP management continues to puzzle me but with one arm short and Taka not able to go deep, he was kind of limited in options last night.

No harm nor foul b/c we never did get that tying run.
Now if Wright would have just thrown home…..

        2. njstuckintx

I’d say yeah on this, but Dickey’s a hybrid knuckler. He’s not throwing 65 MPH knucklers, a la Wakefield. He’s throwing 80-85 with more fastballs and such woven in there. I think he could have taken the ball and thrown several innings if needed, but it’s not like he’s mr. rubber arm no stress can throw every other day type of guy.

          1. GravediggerHebner

Understood about his hybrid-qualities and lack of true rubber-armedness, but I think the ultimate point here is as you said “…he could have taken the ball and thrown several innings…”

It’s not as if Jerry had only KRod left.

Looking at Dickey’s pitchF/X data from his last start he threw 97 pitches, 24 of them fastballs. So in his most recent start he truly exerted himself 24 times over 8 innings. I can’t prove it but I believe he had plenty left to pitch if needed last night.

          2. njstuckintx

Point taken. I still get concerned with how he uses the RPs. Could be a combination of quality of available RPs in the Pen and Jerry’s own philosophy, but it’s still scary. Not quite Amityville Horror scary, but scary none the less.

          3. GravediggerHebner

Certainly most bullpen moves are open to either first or second guessing or both and this is a great forum for it.

Just presenting what I think is a reasonable counter argument in this instance.

    3. stickguy

and, no matter how well he has been hitting lately, in that bases loaded situation, Wright is still among the last guys on the team that I want to see coming up.

      1. Kingman 26

Wow, we have traded places on the negative nonsense patrol!

      2. youngvalerawest

In 98 plate appearacnes this season w/ RISP wright is hitting .309 .367 .506.

With 2 out and RISP Wright has 32 plate appearances and has hit: .290 .313 .516

On the flipside, in 47 plate appearances in late and close situations he has hit just: 146 .234 .195 and in high leverage situations he has hit a pedestrian: 268 .343 .393

Overall, he’s been awful with two outs with a 220 .340 .415 line in 82 at bats.

So an argument can be made either way. Except I wouldn’t go as far as to say the last guy I’d want up in that situation.

    4. Kingman 26

First off my friend, Cora waved Bay to go to 2nd immediately and should definitely get some of the blame.

Wright had a single and double drove in a run, hustled his ass off and made a great slide to score a run, and made a fantastic double play which ended a potential big inning for the Tigers.

And he is leading the league in RBI.

And he has basically zero protection in the lineup with Ike and Bay behind him.

      1. stickguy

I think the no protection arguement is bogus. THey supply protection, and other guys with noone in th elineup (A Gon) do just fine.

and my Wright comment was just subjective.

but honestly, 9th inning, bases loaded, down by a run, list the guys you trust the most to be coming up with the game on the line.

        1. Kingman 26

          Pagan
          Reyes
          Wright
          Barajas
          Ike

  3. metsfan4decades

Yes, I think we all agree we need another SP. Lee is the fantasy right now – let’s see how good Omar is.

Yes, I have no idea what Jerry was thinking with the BP management last night. If we had tied the game and needed extra innings I guess we’d be watching Dickey pitch.

Yes, hitting for the Mets with bases loaded – don’t care who the batter is – is some pitiful .220 team BA, or was last time I looked. I don’t know what it is with this team and bases loaded.

And lastly yes, yes, yes…..would love to see Beltran return end of July in top form. Another fantasy perhaps but hopefully one we’ll be debating soon enough.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

This is what I wrote on the other post this morning. very surprising stats

      Bases loaded.

      Offense
      69/AB 1/2B 1/3B 0/HR 4/BB .203/.238/.246

      Pitching
      80/AB 1/2B 0/3B 7/HR 11/BB .288/.351/.563

But look at the numbers when the runners are on 2nd and 3rd.

      Offense
      45/AB 7/2B 3/3B 1/HR 17/BB .400/.537/.756(this is not OPS!)

      Pitching
      52/AB 4/H 1/2B 0/3B 0/HR 15/BB .077/.268/.096

      Isn’t that crazy???
