This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The “Mmmm Twinkies !” Edition 06-26-10

Ahhh you have to love last nights Mets win against the Twins. Not only does this give the Mets their twelfth interleague win win this season ( it matches the most in franchise history – they also won 12 in ’99), but you know that Mike Francesa is probably stewing after he proclaimed that the Twins would come into this series like a team with something to prove. Well thew one thing the Twinkies proved is that their fundies ( as our man Keith likes to put it) were not as sound last night – committing two errors that produced runs. Both David Wright and Jose Reyes are back to the ’06 level of play, making great fielding plays and producing clutch moments at the plate. Jason Bay seems to be coming around also, collecting his 999 career hit ( a run scoring double). But the two starts from last night were Mike Pelfrey and Ruben Tejada. Mike gutted his way through a laborious first two innings before finding his mojo , while Tejada , is proving to be a human highlight field at the plate, on the bases and on the field – his head first slide into home plate was sick !! And of course Frankie procured his fourteenth save in nail biting fashion , but we all know he live for walking that tightrope !
And just in case you haven’t heard, Carlos Beltran went 2-3 with a double and a walk as the designated hitter in his rehab assignment game at St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State
League.
And for all you World Cup soccer fans out there ( me excluded) – according to the Mets media relations department, fans coming to the Mets vs. Twins game tomorrow will still be able to keep tabs on Team USA’s World Cup match against Ghana.Beginning at 2:00 p.m. the game will available on televisions
in the Bullpen Plaza (accessible from the stairs at each end of the Shea Bridge), the Verizon Studio (located on the
field level concourse in centerfield
), and Big Apple Brews (on the promenade level food court behind home plate)…In
addition all of the clubs throughout CitiField will have the game displayed on various televisions throughout the areas. So if you are a fan of both the Mets and Team U.S.A – and will be attending today’s game. You will sure to be in for the thrill of your life !

And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

” This is the way we like our Minnesota Twins !!”

Today would have been one time Mets batting instructor/ first base coach, Bill Robinson’s 67th birthday (1943). Bill was one of the most overlooked keys to the quasi Mets dynasty of the ’80′s. He took young players under his wing, and he let the veterans do their thing. He was loved and respected by most members of that era.

Middle reliever from ’02- ’03 , Jason Middlebrook is 35 ( 1975). It is mostly forgotten that the Mets obtained him in the deal that sent Jason Bay to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Steve Reed.

And there was a very distraught Mo Vaughn at Citi Field last night . He thought yesterday when he heard Mike Francesa playing the Twinkies would be in town that he meant the cream filled snack cakes !! He was found later on trying to nibble on Joe Mauer’s forearm !

” Mo sure loves his Twinkies !!”

I’ve still never had a fried twinkie. Have to put that on the bucket list in the “accelerate demise” category.

I agree about the fundies I was very surprised at the multiple examples of Twins poor play it does not jive with their reputation. Perhaps it was just a hiccup but glad to be able to take advantage of it.

As others have noted this stretch leading to the All-Star break is a pivotal one for the Mets. So far, so good.

Fried twinkie? What the hell is a fried twinkie? LOL…

It’s what the Mets disposed of last night, but more importantly it’s also THIS

Beat me too it. But check out the ChipShop in Park Slope Brooklyn. The menu on their website in addition to fried twinkies actually has a twice fried cherry pie that’s been banned by the NYC Dept of Health. Tried to post the link but I’m having laptop issues.

Hmmmmm, I wonder if the people who thought spring training pitching results don’t mean anything have awoken yet?

Time to get on the phone to Seattle and up the offer for Lee.

What about Pelf? Bleechh Spring, now 10-2. Niese had a 7.04ERA in Spring and he’s looked great his last post rain delay showing notwithstanding. Lee’s spring on the DL, take him in a heartbeat. ST’s a mixed bag at best imo.

Johan today, bleech but a second half pitcher and he was hitting 91 on the gun today. Arm strength could be coming back for his usual second half run. He is making me nervous though, hopefully his off the field issues won’t become a distraction. My fear is the staff can become a house of cards if he doesn’t anchor down the ace spot soon.

Hope all’s well up north, I was trying to get up that way in July but no dice with work load. Today doesn’t look like our day so hopefully we get a 2 out of 3 tomorrow.

well, johan certainly sucked today. But at least this time he got it out of the way on a day that the Met offense forgot it was a day game, and didn’t show up.

better come out flying tomorrow and take the rubber game. And look for Neise to be pre rain delay, not post!
