The New York Mets the team I am proud to say I love will be playing tomorrow evening in the land of my birth that I am also equally proud to say I love, Puerto Rico. So as a proud Mets fan of Puerto Rican descent I’d like to share this with song from another great Puerto Rican artist Victor Manuelle. The song is called Sabor a Beisbol. Translated ” A Baseball Flavor”

Thanks for this Mr N.
I am a plain ol’ white guy, but black and Hispanic athletes and musicians have been among my top heroes since childhood.
Roberto Clemente was one of my earliest favorite players when I was about 5.

I want to be very clear that I am not complaining that these games will be in Puerto Rico. What do I care I’m just going to be watching on TV anyway.
But I do find it curious that the Marlins would choose to deliberately have 3 games with the Mets, who helped to draw an average of 20,376 to Miami including a high of 26,007 during their previous 4-game series there, in a stadium that holds 18,000 people.

I agree I also don’t see why the Marlins would do this.

maybe they get an appearance fee? Or the revenue sharing is better?
my understanding is that the marlin stadium deal sucks, so they likely aren’t getting a ton of the Met fan money.
maybe they get a better cut, and something on the side? playing in PR?
one thing for sure, the marlins are all about the $$, so it must make sense for them to do this.

Not true. Mets at Florida earlier this season averaged 20,376. Hiram Bithorn stadium seats 18,000.

Maybe they get a cut from the Puerto Rican money and they think the Mets would draw Puerto Rican fans with Carlos Beltran.

better bring a cardboard cut out of him then, since the real thing won’t be making the trip.
Do they even have anyone of P.R. heritage on the active roster right now?

So these are considered home games for the Marlins?
Maybe the Marlins are trying to get P.R. interested as life long fans of their team. But I agree there still has to be some $$ in it for them….

I’ve been trying to articulate my response to the above in a respectful manner. I guess the points that come to mind are as such.
1. Pride is a good thing when celebrating one’s culture and such. I rock the Norwegian Christmas cookies like they’re going out of style around the holidays and tend towards a little Scandinavian Elitism from time to time. That said, I wonder (I truely do) when the need to recognize ethnicities and their people (insert any here, not singling out PR. Could be Chinese, Sudanese, Germans, Irish, Mexican, Soman, etc.) will not take such a front seat. “I was talking to this Black dude. I was talking to this Chinese dude. I was talking to this ____ dude.” I guess what I’m saying is why can’t it be I was just talking to this dude? Just makes me scratch my head.
2. If canada can have a baseball team, why not PR, which produces many more players than Canada does.
and 3. The $ thing does make me wonder, regarding the marlins. Wouldn’t it make more sense to play the Nats in PR where they aren’t sacrificing revenue? They’re coming out ahead on this one way or another, that’s for sure.

1. Maybe the real point is when will it be “I was talking to this Chinese dude” and it doesn’t mean anything more than “I was talking to this dude”. When does it simply become a descriptor like “I was talking to this Mets fan on the subway”, or “I was talking to a coworker”. I’ve always felt the answer is not to try to get to a state where we no longer recognize or ‘notice’ race, but one where we _do_ but don’t treat it as lesser. (will never happen either. people will always be prejudiced.) now, racism topics aside,
2. Seems reasonable to me. throw the Marlins or Rays over there. PR isn’t really that much further than Florida travelwise.
3. the Marlins are a disaster. I’m sure they’re making out. They don’t do things that don’t cause them to win out.

I honestly don’t know what the population or demographics of P.R are, but could San Juan really support a ML team full time? Or would they end up being a real small market team without enough well to do fans (and corporations to buy luxury suites) to actually field a competitive team?
Now, a minor league team could probably make out like a bandit, if the travel issues didn’t kill them (probably not a lot of buses running to the island, right?
Hey, if you really want to go where the talent is, put one in the D.R too!

There actually is a pretty decent ferry system going to PR ex. Miami region. And assuming that there was a stadium large enough to house about 35K people, I’m sure they would sell like hot cakes. And who wouldn’t want to play for PR? The weather, the beaches… It’d like SD but with character.

Yeah, I see the point as a description purpose. I guess it all comes from an 8 year old me coming insider from running around and my grandfather was watching the mets game. He came right off the boat through Ellis Isle, to offer some background info. Anyway, the mets are playing and he pulls me over and says to me “do you realize that only the pitcher and the catcher are white?”. At that time i was like uh, ok, now can i go back outside and throw stones in the stream? but looking back, as i do from time to time, i’m like WTF was that??? Grandpa, you had some issues, my mna. End discussion on color or creed, unless you want to discuss how awesome the band Living Color was or how bad Creed was…

TX, It would really depend on how one defines “recognize and front seat” don’t you think?
I mean I myself looking at it can draw a number of possible variations one may derive from it so it is something very hard to attempt to answer without being more specific.
I don’t live in P.R. so I can’t talk knowledgeably about the economy but I have a hard time believing a MLB team can survive in P.R. with the salary structure MLB currently has in place. That is why these next couple of games will be fun for many that live on the island that can’t fly in to the states to watch a MLB Game.
I expect the biggest applause to go to 31 yr old rookie Jesus Feliciano. I would not be surprised to see a story or 2 on him.

Well, if the Marlins can do it where they are, why not in PR? I guess how the new stadium will affect the Fish financially with see how they decide to grow out their payroll or not.

MLB wants this game because baseball isn’t as popular in PR and has lost a lot of youth market share to basketball. PR’s blame the draft and kids not getting big signing bonuses like in DR, so there’s less of an investment like there is in DR.
I’d imagine that the Marlins being close to PR and having a large PR and Latino fan base is a reason why they want to expand their base in PR.
Of course, there’s probably some revenue for the Marlins, which could be big in this series because it’s getting a lot of hype in PR.

its all about money…the Marlins get a full stadium for 3 home games…higher attendance = more money.

I am looking forward to seeing how into it the crowds are going to be. Always a great atmosphere when it’s more like an event than just a baseball game.

Stupid dodgers. the silver lining is the Yankees had to use Rivera 2IP (more he pitches now, the more likely he breaks down later, which seems to happen every year) and they delayed their departure from LA by an hour or two. I know they have an offday, but at least it messes with their schedules, and Joba gave up more runs which is fun.

Well, I want the yankees to lose as much as the next guy. And I love to see their players (eespecially certain ones!) come up small.
But unless the Mets and Yanks both make the WS again, The yankers are irrelevant to me now.
So, I root for them to win every interleague game (other than the Mets of course) when they are playing good teams. The Dodgers could end up being competition for the Met’s PS run, so the more losses they get the better.

6/28/2010-12:16pm at 12:16 pm (UTC -4)
I never think that way, because I figure I’m rooting for the Mets anyway, so I’ll just root for them to not need teams to be beaten by the Yanks. Hence my “I’d rather the Phillies win I think” in Interleague.
I dream of a NY that is a Mets town again. Therefore the soooner the Yanks are eliminated, the more the media and talk radio is dominated by Mets talk. This has only happened twice in recent years. 2006, but we first got a week of Yanks talk cause the Mets weren’t playing since they had like a week off between series.
And again in 2008 when the Yankees were eliminated well before the Mets, but there was the final games at the parks and it wasn’t much before and the Mets didn’t actually win anything.
