TUESDAY

Some would call it a voulture win but clearly mother nature iced the starters arm to the point that he could not get that last out, thats where middle relievers come in. Fernando Nieve got the last out that Niese could not after the rain delay and went another 2 innings of scoreless relief for the win. For someone who earned the title “Everyday Nieve”, Fernando has been used sparingly as of late. That is a product most likely of our pitching doing their job and because they are, Nieve is in a role that made him so reliable to start the year.

The mini-Beltran was on full throttle on Tuesday night. Pagan came a homer shy of hitting for the cycle on Tuesday night. He went 4-6 with 4 RBI’s. What makes a guy like Pagan so invaluable is not only has he broke out in the way he has this season, he is the definition of a team player:
“What’s in my mind is to help the team as much as I can and to protect Carlos’ spot; that’s a big responsibility,†he said.
Angel Pagan has been nothing short of awesome this year, we can only hope it continues.
HONORABLE MENTION
Jose Reyes going 3-6 with an RBI, 3 runs and a stolen base
David Wright for going 3-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s
Ike Davis for going 3-6 with 3 RBI
Ryota Igarashi and Bobby Parnell for 2 scoreless innings of relief

WEDNESDAY

What more can be said of R.A. Dickey that has not already been said. The man is 6-0, gave up 4 hits, 2 walks and if not for our stupid manager…a complete game. The Tigers could not capitalize on any offensive attack they tried to mount on Dickey. R.A. made every pitch count and it seems that every strike out was in a crucial situation.
“Early in the game, he was leaving the knuckler up a little bit, but when he keeps it down, he’s very successful,†Tigers leadoff hitter Johnny Damon said. “His knuckleball is almost as hard as his fastball, so he throws kind of a changeup knuckler, also.â€
I personally love what Dickey bring to the rotation. Its a differnt look that makes the overall rotation that much more formidable. How long he can keep this up is something that nobody knows but one thing that we have seen so far that bodes well for a positive answer to that question is his ability to fight. Something that you just cant put a stat on.

How nice it is to have a front row seat while watching a player return to their all star form. Jose Reyes went 3-4 with a home run and an RBI. Dont look now but Reyes is getting close to .300. Not only that, he has 50 runs to this point and has 6 home runs. Needless to say, Jose Reyes is back to being Jose Reyes…a sight for sore eyes.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Ike Davis went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s
David Wright going 1-3 with an RBI
—————————————————————————————————————————–
FRIDAY

10-2…

David Wright went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs. 2009 was a season to forget for Wright but one of the silver linings of the seasons was the potential for it to be a stepping stone for him regarding leadership. Wright is on pace for 30 hrs and over 100 RBI’s…id say lesson learned.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Jose Reyes for going 2-3 with an RBI
Bobby Parnell, Pedro Feliciano for scoreless innings of relief
Francisco Rodriguez for his 17th save of the year
————————————————————————————————————————–
SUNDAY

Showing that when mother nature has a good day, Niese can have a good day. Niese went 6 innings with 5 strike outs. Niese had everything going for him today. He threw alot more curve balls than he usually does and it kept the Twins off balance the whole day. He kept a Twins lineup of 7 right hand hitters to four hits on a very humid summer day in New York City. Niese improved to 4-0 on a refreshing outing that made the day much more bearable and improving the Mets record to 3-8 in rubber games.

Oh yea, Jeff Francoeur was on fire today. Frenchy was in a pretty bad slump that saw him go 3-22. Not only was he slumping, he made a horrible decision early in this game by making the last out at 3rd base. Frenchy made up for that and more with a deep two run homer that put the Mets on the board and finished the day going 3-4. The Mets need Frenchy to step up his game now more than ever with Angel Pagan hurting on the bench, hopefully this game helps Jeff turn the corner.
HONORABLE MENTION
David Wright who also hit a 2 run homer and finished 3-4
Ike David who hit an absolute bomb to Shea Bridge and finished 2-4
Jesus Feliciano who went 3-5
Elmer Dessens, Pedro Feliciano and Bobby Parnell for throwing 3 innings of scoreless relief

Our stupid manager.
Incredible.
And if KRod had not pitched and then came out two days later and got shelled, other people also much smarter than Jerry would be calling him stupid for not using KRod enough.
Dickey getting a shutout is meaningless. The team winning means everything.
Calling Jerry stupid in this situation is laughable. And ridiculous.

A couple good young SPers,
a couple hard throwers in
the BP, An Allstar 1Bman…..

Yeah, I would have to agree.
However, I personally think the Padres are doing it with smoke, mirrors, incantations and some sort of magic which cannot last.
If they make the playoffs, yeah, Black has to be Manager of the Year.

And pitching krod one day later wouldnt have made a bit of difference. There was no reason to deny Dickey the complete game. I understand krod needs his work and he had not pitched in several days but for a guy who threw an excellent game, he should have had the chance to finish the job. I disagree with his decision to bring in krod in that situation.

Stupid is defined by the following analysis from Michael Baron on Mattsblog:
“…i think we are going to learn a lot about the Mets over the next five weeks or so…they play 18 of their next 30 games on the road through the end of july with a ten day stretch in san francisco, phoenix, and los angeles…i’m looking forward to the wild ride to the trading deadline…hang on to your hats…”
You really think we’ll learn something about the team in the next five weeks? Because I thought that maybe nothing would occur over the next five weeks or that those games might not have any impact on the season.

4 days of Man Ups in a 6 day period. I’ll take that every time.

I am just very skeptical about how Niese, Pelf and Dickey are pitching right now. The Mets are winning 77% of the games those 3 pitch and I just dont see how that can be sustained long term.
by comparison the Cardinals have won 61% of Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia’s starts and the Yankees have only won 74% of Sabathia, Hughes and Pettitte’s starts.
I just dont see how they can keep that up. even if they drop down to 60% of their starts turn into wins, it costs us 9 wins in the standings. Now can Santana and Takahaski (plus Beltran) make up those extra 9 wins between the two of them, I am not sure but if you get Lee and put Takahashi in the pen, I believe we can survive a drop in production from anyone of the remaining 4 SPs.

can’t have it both ways oleo. If you think probability doesnt support those 3, it doesn’t support santana being .500 either.
so yeah, it probably evens out. Or the mets just keep playing .700 ball for the next 3 months, and win a bunch of games!
not that I am arguing about your last point. I would be happy to see a solid SP come in, and push taka back to the pen.

well it depends if Santana is healthy or not…
even if he does return to his 08 form, if Niese, Pelf and Dickey stop pitching at the historic rates they are on pace for now, the Mets are going to have to win a huge percentange of his games to even it out…ceteris paribus of course…

I don’t know if this is the appropriate arena, but I would like to thank the powers of this organization for putting Mejia on the fast track to Joba land. Giving Jerry the clout to keep this kid here for no apparent reason, then not pitching him regularly, finally he gets sent down and his shoulder is injured.
Just imagine for a second if Mejia was where he belonged to begin the season.
The Mets are winning and i’m overjoyed about that, but I feel it wouldnt be right if i did’nt betch about something.

LOL – no way of knowing at all if Mejia was never up here if he still would have come up with shoulder stiffness at the end of June….

i think it was just coincidence. getting hurt one batter into your second inning of work could easily have happened if he was still in a relief role with the Mets.

I agree. he pretty much is still pitching on a RP schedule.
Now, there is no way to know what would have happened if he had started in the minors, and was up to 80 IP as a starter. He might have broken down before this.

When you see these Man Up Awards all at once for the week, it becomes obvious that just about the entire team is contributing. Good SP and a very good BP aside, it’s Reyes or Davis or Wright or Franceour or Pagan getting it done on different days, along with the supporting cast of characters in Jesus Feliciano or Barajas or Bay (as Bay hasn’t exactly come into his own as a Met yet).
If/when Beltran returns and his bat along with him, that will be one very fine line-up.

So I go to FWICG.com to see what the hoopla is about concerning Valentine and the Marlines – Dad just mentioned something he saw on ESPN a little while ago…
I read this: ‘Last Friday, Heyman said the Marlins had a tentative agreement with the Marlins to take over in time for the Marlins play the Mets in Puerto Rico.’
LOL…..3 guesses on the author of that post.
I’m assuming that translation was suppose to read they had a tentative agreement with Valentine?

lol Valentine probably demanded that the owners actually have a payroll…I certainly wouldnt manage a team with a 40 mil dollar payroll and an owner who still expects to compete with teams than spend 3 times as much year in and year out
