What is it lately with most of our starting pitching? It seems that from Johan’s performance on Saturday to Takahashi last night, some of the Mets pitchers have given up a ton of runs in one inning. Even the steady R.A Dickey surrendered four runs against the Marlins on Monday night against the Marlins. Is it a lack of concentration? Are they tipping their pitches ? I honestly don’t have the answer, but I do admit that this trend is getting me a bit nervous. I am the first one to admit that I am a reactionist, but I was reading my esteemed colleague Kingman26′s report from last night that said the Mets are in serious discussions with the Mariners for Cliff Lee, and I feel that if all it would take to bring in him here was F-Mart, Bobby Parnell and Josh Thole – Well I along with Kong would drive them cross country to deliver them to the M’s personally, while listening to a mix of Jazz and hard rock along the way - HELL I’LL EVEN LISTEN TO THE DREADED HIP HOP IF THAT’S ALL WE HAD TO GIVE UP FOR LEE !!!Lets face it when it comes to outfielders in our organization, F-mart is expendable. I love Josh Thole but good fielding catchers are almost always available – hey we might even try to extend Barajas and Blanco’s contracts they are doing such fine jobs. And I would hate to see Bobby Parnell’s 94 plus M.P.H fastball go, but lets face it – we are in serious need of a front of the line starting pitcher. If we were to get Lee I believe Takahashi slots back into the pen ( he is dominant when he opposing team sees him the first go round in the batting order) while Dicker – who has been the mostly consistent of the two stays as our number five starter. I feel it would instantly make the Mets the team to beat if Lee is obtained ( fingers crossed ) !!

Celebrating Birthdays today are:
Folk hero from the ’60′s , Ron Swoboda ( he will always be remembered for that catch !!) .He is 66 today (1944)
One of the best short stops in history,Tony Fernandez is 48(1962) As soon as he became a Met he tanked, but when we traded him away he reverted back to his all start form – makes you wonder if he didn’t enjoy his tenure with the Mets.
Sadly on this date the Mets lost two members of their family. Catcher from the ’73 team,Jerry May in 1996 and reserve catcher from ’76, Jay Kleven just last year.
New York Mets traded pitcher,Ed Lynch to the Chicago Cubs for reserve catcher,Dave Liddell and pitching prospect, Dave Lenderman on June 30, 1986. I remember being very upset because I loved Lynchie as a kid- he was one of the better bullpen arms we had at the time.
And Mo Vaughn caught Montezuma Revenge during last nights game . The death toll is listed at 20 with reports of 60 others still missing!

Well, labels in music really are not that important, especially today when artists cross over into so many areas; I think a lot of Jay-Z, Tribe Called Quest and others sounds a lot like soul, R&B, and (more interesting) funk.

Ollie gets a rehab start today. Expect various beat writer sarcastic criticisms and also crazy analysis of his pitch speeds, based on third hand reports.

and it’s fine if you dont think he will. But that doesn’t mean the Mets should release/kill/retricted list/send him to abu dabi
There’s such an attitude of hatred around him, and I can’t figure out why. I don’t really care how much money he’s making, it’s only through next year anyway which isn’t exactly handicapping. He hasn’t had any ‘blown season’ moments like Heilman or Glavine..
I thought he’d have a bounceback season after the injury and layoff. So far I’ve been very wrong, of course, the MRI showed something in his knee (which was probably not a real ‘injury’) but he’s still probably figuring out how to adjust to having the surgery on the knee, building strength there, and just like Johan, having to erase the bad habits he formed from pitching injured for the entirity of last season.
Kingman 26
6/30/2010-9:55am at 9:55 am (UTC -4)
The hatred is because he has been paid about 18 million in the last 1.5 baseball years for less than nothing.
Last year he clearly showed up to camp out of shape and wasted an entire year.
This year he refused a minor league assignment and the team played a man short until they DLed him.
Understanding the hatred towards Luis Castillo, Aaron Heilman, Armando Benitez, Doug Sisk, and many others might be debatable, but understanding the hatred towards Ollie is the easiest and most rational thing in the world.
Glavine and Heilman were in shape and tried their hardest. Ollie has done neither since signing the big contract.
ceetar
6/30/2010-10:07am at 10:07 am (UTC -4)
a lot of it’s media spin. for instance, was he out of shape because he was hurting and couldn’t work out, or vice versa?
Johan claims he could barely walk at times. Isn’t trying to fight through an injury and compete rather than complain and sit on the DL “trying his hardest”? Isn’t wanting to stay on the team and try to compete also an example of that? Wouldn’t going to Buffalo or St. Lucie immediately and lounging around be the very definition of ‘not caring’? The DL thing this year was a product of disconnect between Player-manager-GM, not specifically player.
Didn’t working out this winter and going to that camp represent above and beyond?
Kingman 26
6/30/2010-10:12am at 10:12 am (UTC -4)
Ollie, according to teammates, coaches, and results, was out of shape last spring.
Interesting perspective though on thinking that going to the minors might suggest not caring. Personally, I think it suggested that Ollie would rather sit on the bench in the majors than start every 5th day in the minors, and while part of me cannot blame him, after 1+ years of complete ineptitude, I think the right team-first thing to do would have been to happily go to Buffalo, throw 3-4 great games in a row and force the issue.
And yes, I thought working out this winter and going to that camp were going to show the new Ollie.
I was among the very few who were for bringing him back, but he has been really a disaster far beyond what I could have ever envisioned.
Ultimately, like John Maine, if injuries have just shaved 5-6+ mph off his fastball, it’s all irrelevant anyway. With his lack of command, and lack of a serious arsenal of pitches, he, like Maine, is a basically Nelson Figueroa with an 88 mph fastball.
ceetar
6/30/2010-10:30am at 10:30 am (UTC -4)
Well, Ollie clearly has good stuff, even now. Those couple of starts where he did well, and even parts of others, his stuff was seemed good from what I could tell. He was mixing speeds and pitches almost masterfully. It was certainly enough to suggest to me that with building up a little arm strength and getting his mechanics a little more refined and he’d be able to go back to at least what he was: a guy who could throw a couple of brilliant games, but also someone who’d miss corners, or get a stingy ump, and have one of those stinkers.
but..here’s the thing..
Takahashi is a good pitcher, but maybe not a starter. But as a reliever that can throw 3-4 easily, it provides a very valuable weapon in being able to shrug off one of Ollie’s starts (and when he’s “right”, those bad starts aren’t usuall 8-0 games, they’re usually just games where he walks a ton and its’ 2-0 with 100 pitches in the third, so they’re definitely in it), not tax the bullpen because Takahashi will take it to the 6th or 7th, and still get the ‘gold’ from Ollie’s good starts.
It was bad that Ollie showed up out of shape last spring, but I think the Mets compounded the problem by permitting an otu of shape Ollie to go to Mexico, particularly unsupervised.

I really and truly agree with your last paragraph 100%.
I agree with most of this. I feel particularly let down by Ollie as I think Omar, me, and MF4D were the three people who wanted him back.
Of course, that is irrelevant to the debate.
I hope as much as anyone that he can be a valuable 4th or 5th starter.

I just shipped something to Abu Dhabi, ironically enough. And no, I agree that he shouldn’t just be released.
I think the hatred that comes from so many (and I’ll admit it comes from me as well from time to time) is him not showing any care or emotion. Is it right to do that based on how we perceive him and his feelings? No, prob. not. But, look at others like him and the same reactions come up. Beltran did, Bay does some (though jacking a few more HRs would solve that issue), even McReynolds still takes heat as he was Mr. Even-Keel. I guess when you see the fire/desire, you can’t fault a guy for trying. Even if he sucks, at least he’s trying. When it seems like they aren’t, then the average Joe gets pissed. Just a fact of life, I guess.

Ollie pitching today? Interesting.
But, it could be a double edged sword. If he looks OK, it may sway Omar away from making a move for a SP. I only think they will be adding 1 rotation guy, replacing Taka, and if Ollie looks good they may just hold off on making a move in case he is the one to do it.
I was actaully surprised last night to read about this imminent (in theory) Lee deal. I was figuring it would be late July (at least after the ASB) before anything happens.
And if that ends up being the case, you do have to put Ollie right in the mix. Not exactly Ted Liily. Actually, not exactly Lily Meunster, yet once again I digress.
I really hope that if they do get someone for the rotation soon, they don’t end up dicking over dickey by sending him to the pen in order to start Ollie.

ceetar rasies a good point (indirectly) up above.
Right now, the Mets are missing that key long man in the pen. Always a good thing to have (since you never know when any starter might have a short outing), and absolutley essential when you have a guy like Ollie in the rotation! Taka can nicely fill that role, along with being a late inning guy in short doses.
real hard for a manager to utilize a pitching staff if they have only 1 inning guys and oogys on hand, if they have to go to the pen early. And doubly hard for someone that is already strategically challenged like Jerry.
ceetar
6/30/2010-10:45am at 10:45 am (UTC -4)
wasn’t quite indirectly.
Part of this is Jerry though. He manages the bullpen in a way because he believes these guys are 1 inning guys or oogys, except when he decides they’re not randomly (Pedro in the 9th last night)
But he did use Takahashi in that role, and it’s a nice thing to have. And having a good LR meshes so well with the type of pitcher Oliver Perez usually is. But it’s not limited to him either, as Niese is still a rookie, who knows what other pitchers will pitch games for the Mets this year (other rookies? Misch? Maine?) that may occasionally be knocked out early.
If you think about it, the pitching wasn’t that amazing in teh 2006 playoffs, but Maine and Perez battled very very well, and Willie had faith in his bullpen that he wasn’t afraid to go to them early if he felt it was the best option. (i felt like Willie really stepped up in the playoffs too. I can only hope Jerry does the same) Right now Jerry manages like he’s afraid of the bullpen and doesn’t trust them. The best solution to Jerry’s managerial woes is to have a reliever that earns his trust and is successful too. Takes the guesswork out of a lot of reliever decisions.

Was there no one in the bull pen with better splits against righties than Pedro last night?
GravediggerHebner
6/30/2010-11:24am at 11:24 am (UTC -4)
I certainly agree with much of the criticism of Jerry specifically regarding how he utilized the bullpen last night.
But I have to say I can’t figure out why he still has only 6 relievers. We are days removed from Barajas back spasms (or whatever it was). Why the team continues forward with 6 relievers and 3 catchers confounds me.
Last night when Feliciano came in Dessens, Parnell & KRod were already out. That left Nieve, Igarashi & Feliciano. Nieve had thrown 2 innings and 30 pitches the night before allowing 3 runs, Igarashi 1 inning and 25 pitches allowing 3 runs.
So IMO yes that situation could have been managed better, but that could have been helped by having a 7th pitcher available.
njstuckintx
6/30/2010-11:31am at 11:31 am (UTC -4)
Yeah, makes no sense. Unless this is all about marketing Thole for the Lee trade, but if that’s the case, just DL barajas retro back a couple of days to bring in another reliever. If you do trade Thole quicker than expected, bring up Santos or Coste or whomever to be backup for a few days. I would think having 7 in the Bullpen would be manditory based on how Jerry uses them.
But, as I wrote the above I thought this. How is it that with a 7 man bullpen, Jerry could not use 1 of those 7 for weeks on end, it seemed?
I can’t armchair quarter back this, just makes me scratch my head.
GravediggerHebner
6/30/2010-11:44am at 11:44 am (UTC -4)
That’s a fair point about a 7th bullpen member being essentially buried.
Jerry seems to bury some hitter on the bench too. Tatis had I think 14 at bats in 22 games this month coming in to last night.
I can’t say which is worse or therefore which he should have, the 7th bullpen guy or the 6th bench guy but my initial thought is I’d rather he have the option of the 7th bullpen guy.

I posted this summary of my thoughts on the SP situation on anothe rsite, but y’all deserve the benefit of my wisdom too!
I’m pretty sure that the Mets really like Lee. Who wouldn’t?
But, they have been rpetty consistant with deciding on player value, and moving on if they can’t get a guy they like for what they (not any poster here) feel that it is worth. Mets also are looking at today, and next year, and they year after.
So, it would surprise at least me for the Mets to push 3 top prospects + a current ML into the deal (which some have suggessted). If they make what they feel is a full price offer, and the M’s scoff at it, most likely they will have a couple of plan B deals cooling to move onto, and quickly.
so don’t be surprised if there is a big day of Lee deal almost done rumors, and the next morning you find out the Mets got someone else instead.
also, if you worry abotu leverage, it goes both ways. As soon as the Mets take themselves out of the running, the likely return to Seattle (from anyone) takes a nose dive.

Captain Kirk used to play 2B! It was legion ball, but that was only about 5 years ago for him, and they tend to play a ton. So he must have been not too bad to be put there.

I’ve taken to unfollowing people that make my head hurt on Twitter. (I’m sure you can guess one or two) and I no longer auto-follow back people that follow me. Keeps the insanity in my feed down to a minimum. kinda annoying when people retweet those people i unfollowed, but what-ever.

I am still getting used to the quirks of twitter that’s for sure. I have been on for like 5 days and am being followed by a couple people/things that have no relevance to me whatsoever and I’m not sure where they came from. Who is Anthony_Nova, or OneLifeGoals, or HotUKvouchers and why the hell are they following me? I guess it was in the hope that I would reciprocate but I did not.

There’s a lot of robot (spam) accounts that will follow anyone that tweets a certain word. I entered a tweet with the word muscle in it, and was immediately followed by a handful of body building website twitter accounts.

yeah, it amuses me how random words get picked up by bots. often other teams. I mentioned Vikings once and got a minnesota vikings following.
Twitter is very interesting. I originally thought it was very stupid, but it’s an oddly powerful entity that’s having some profound affects on things. Even 5 years ago who would’ve ever thought you could easily have a conversation with that Mets columnist guy in the newspaper, or directly with the Mets (even if they spelt my name wrong (and then apologized)).

You don’t make my head hurt.
I’ve only really unfollowed a couple of people. various amounts of spam, stupid Mets-hate stuff without ever adding anything of value, etc. One person was a nice enough person, but they were one of those stream of consciousness persons and would go on all day with like 50-100 tweets a day about things like soap operas. Very much like how people new to email send out chain letter forwards.

I know exactly who you’re referring to.

Another reason for the Mets to trade for Lee is an instant marketing boom with the NY Chinese community. All of Flushing will be wearing Lee jerseys.
