In a game that was delayed 1:20 by rain, the New York Mets used a makeshift lineup that included Jesus Feliciano in the lead off spot for the first time in his career due to a pregame injury suffered by regular lead off batter Jose Reyes, and tonight Feliciano helped get the Mets off to a quick start then late closer Francisco Rodriguez came on with 2 outs and the tying run in scoring position for the Marlins in the 8th to stifle that rally and hold on for the save as the Mets beat the Florida Marlins in the final game of the San Juan Series 6-5.
The Mets scored 3 runs off Marlins starter Chris Volstad before making an out in the top of the 1st inning.Â Feliciano led off the game with a double to left.Â Ruben Tejada reached on an error by Marlins 1B Gaby Sanchez to put runners on the corners.Â David Wright doubled home Feliciano and Tejada, then Ike Davis singled to plate Wright and it was 3-0 Mets.Â The Marlins quickly cut into the lead off of Mets starter Mike Pelfrey in the bottom of the 1st.Â Chris Coghlan led off with a double and 1 out later Hanley Ramirez singled to drive him in.Â While Jorge Cantu struck out Ramirez stole second base, then scored on a single by Dan Uggla and after 1 inning it was 3-2 Mets.
Alex Cora led off the top of the 2nd with a double then Pelfrey failed to get a good bunt down on a sacrifice attempt and Cora had to stay at second base as Pelfrey was thrown out, but Feliciano plated him with a single to make it 4-2 Mets.Â The Marlins tied the game in the 5th.Â Ramirez led off with a single and scored on a double by Cantu.Â Uggla followed with an RBI single and after 5 innings it was knotted up at 4 runs each.Â But the Mets struck back quickly in the top of the 6th.Â Jason Bay led off against reliever Alex Sanabia (0-1) and reached on an error by Cantu.Â Chris Carter singled and 1 out later Cora reached on an error by Uggla to load the bases.Â Josh Thole was called on to pinch-hit for the third consecutive game and for the third time he got a hit, an RBI single making it 5-4 Mets.
In the 7th the Mets added an insurance run when Tejada led off getting hit by a pitch.Â Wright reached on the Marlins 4th error of the game, the second charged to Cantu, as Tejada advanced to third base.Â 1 out later Bay singled to drive home Tejada to make it 6-4 Mets.
Bobby Parnell allowed the Marlins to cut it to 1 in the 8th.Â With 2 outs, Coghlan singled then scored on a Sanchez double making it 6-5 Mets.Â Ramirez was then intentionally walked and the Mets called on their closer Rodriguez with 2 outs and the tying run on 2nd.Â He threw 1 pitch to pinch-hitter Worldwide Wes Helms who popped up to center ending the inning.Â KRod then gave all Mets fans their nightly ulcer by allowing 2 Marlins to reach base in the bottom of the 9th but struck out pinch-hitter Brian Barden with the tying run on third to earn his 18th save.Â Mets 6, Marlins 5.
