Reyes is getting treatment for a strained Oblique….Let’s think about this carefully!

According to Metsblog, Jose Reyes is getting treatment for a strained Oblique muscle.  He hopes to get back into the line up by Saturday.

Let’s think about this for a minute.  Reyes has already missed two games already.  Do you think the Mets should take a chance here to rush him back? Y’know what helps a strained Oblique-nothing. The prescription for this is rest!   Why are the Mets fooling around here especially when Beltran is talking about returning on the next homestand?

Consider this:  If the Mets were to put Reyes on the DL retroactive two days ago, he would be eligible to come off right at the All-Star break thus giving him a few more days of rest.   Let’s play it safe and get him back a 100 percent.

When he returns for the second half, you not only have a healthy Reyes but possibly a healthy Beltran too.  This doesn’t take into account any pick-up the Omar may make happen before the Trading Deadline.

Thoughts?

This is silly. If he can return full strength, even if it’s Monday at home and not Saturday, you likely win more games than if you DL him. Although you do wonder about having the third catcher and zero backup MIs.

Yeah, the current roster makeup is a little confusing.

additionally, it’s looking like the last three games before the break (would love to have Beltran back then too) will be big against the Braves. Going into the break in first place would be a big boost for this team mentally.

Instead of worrying about beating the Braves it might be wise to concentrate on beating the Nationals. This year the Mets haven’t been too successful in accomplishing this task.

Alright, but let’s say he’s hurting, we went through this already. Why are the mets going to push him? I mean, hey, if he’s fine…play him. But if this is a little serious, why would you take a chance?

      1. njstuckintx

If they did DL him, who would be the options to bring up in the MiL that are on the 40 man roster?

Assume Tejada starting SS, cora starting 2B (and backup SS), unless Castillo is ready to come back.

By the by, any word on Castillo’s return? I haven’t heard boo about him.

        1. stickguy

that truner guy could come up and play 2B. COra on the bench wehre he belongs.

Per TRS, he is already on the 40 man.

and last I heard at castillo, he was not making much progress, and was not close to beginning a rehab stint. So might not have to worry about him for quite a while. Hopefully all year!

Off Topic but I thought it would fit here due to it being about a commenter over at Mattsblog.

Jesus, what a wast of a post. Can we stop posting or discussing non-news. This post basically says – no one knows anything about the Lee situation.

Let’s stick to posting actualy news or rumors not – “a source doesn’t know anything and thinks the Mets like Lee but has no clue what the M’s wants to what’s going on but likes to be called a source so he’ll mention Lee’s name so people quote him.”

Okay, I’ll stop now. I haven’t had my morning cup of coffee and I’m cranky. :)

Ever since they read one of MrMustSeeTV’s tweets on Loudmouths his ego has gone berserk!

      Just kidding.

well, as much as I agree with the few days now better tan 2 weeks for sure gone theory, with Reyes, I am more in fear that he comes back a little too early, and maes it worse, and is out longer than Utley.

So, take the rest time now, but having tatis as the only BU MI (with Cora starting!) is to say the least depressing. Actually, it is down right scary!

maybe send the 3rd C down for a MI?

    1. njstuckintx

I think you’ll not have to worry about that whole 3rd catcher thing when the Lee deal goes down over the weekend. Thole, we hardly had a chance to fall in love with you. Don’t let the door hit you in the backside. Hello General Lee. General Lee? We already have a General. This could get awkward!

      1. stickguy

for some reason, I don’t think THole is going anywhere. Actually, I don’t think Lee is coming to the Mets, but that is just my gut Jerrying me.

I would love Lilly if they could get him relativley cheap though.

        1. njstuckintx

True he may not. But wouldn’t it be great to have water painting’s of the Orange charger flying through the air in Joe Petruccio’s art after another complete game shut out?!?

Speaking of the catching situation, while Barajas/Blanco have been wonderful so far and about as large an upgrade over Snyder/Castro, I really think age and ability are starting to take their toll. Not sure what is out there for the open market come next year, but Thole may become very valuable next year if there isn’t another option. Barajas/Thole combo for next year, assuming he’s not used to snag Lee?

Lastly, should the Mets snag Lilly, I’m guessing he slots in at the 3 spot? pushing Neise back to 4, Dickey to 5, Taka to the Pen.

          1. GravediggerHebner

I realize this is not the way it will be decided but based on the respective last 30 days of work of all the SP in question Lilly slots in at the # 1 spot for the NY Mets.

I’d really rather not have to think about Reyes being injured at all….

It’s so hard to have an opinion on this b/c I’m convinced now more than ever the Mets go out of their way to hide details as much as possible when it comes to the Mets and injuries – especially after last season, or more to the point because of how last season went down.

It was reported Beltran would be back initially right after the start of the season. IMO, there is no way the Mets didn’t know that wasn’t happening. They just didn’t want the fan base going all ‘oh, here we go again’….

The Reyes has a thyroid problem and will be back anywhere from 2-8weeks. 2-8? And there were so many stories going around about him then, it would have benefited the Mets to have been a little more forthcoming but they choose not to.

Pagan’s injury and now Reyes: Anytime a player is coming out of the lineup for anything other than being sick, there is no way it’s a day or two. Players play through aches and pains all the time. Scratching them from the lineup means something a little more serious. Serious does not usually mean 1-2 days. Pagan they should have just DL’d, for as much as he’s played in the past 10 days. Reyes? IMO, they’d probably be better off doing that as well. If they’re going day to day, we’re playing one man short, again. We all know Reyes would play hurt, given the chance. Better to take that temptation away from him….

Also, I know it’s another topic pe ople like to be irrational on, but how about Perez throwing 93? If with a couple more starts he’s able to do that at least regularly, I’d be comfortable expecting him to give us ’07-’08 numbers with the always lingering possibility he’ll suddenly become that mythical Ollie Ace guy.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I’ll assume that was an occasional high, not an average, as he hasn’t averaged 93mph since 2004.

Even as an occasional high it would be markedly better than anything he’d shown in some time and therefore welcomed by me.

When he was known as “Good Ollie/Bad Ollie” instead of just “Bad Ollie” his FB averaged more than 90.0 mph. So here’s to hoping he can come back averaging more than that because thus he will have the “stuff” that allowed him to achieve whatever measure of success he has achieved in the past.

The concept of him learning how to pitch without his stuff sure didn’t seem IMO to be working.

      1. ceetar

there were starts, even batters, where he definitely seemed to be learning how to pitch. But this was probably always the case. It’s the consistency that’s eluded him. Who knows..pitchers do learn though, and they do say adversity helps. I have no idea what the percise numbers are, just that Howie said he was hitting 93.

    2. oleosmirf

when he throws consistently in the 90s, doesn’t walk a batter per inning and can actually get 7 IP in a start then maybe I’ll take a look
