Post Game: Don’t Sweat The Pyrotechnics

"It's cool when you freak to the beat..."

My computer is melting in the heatwave so no fun & games from me tonight.  Discuss the Cincinnati Reds 8, New York Mets 6 game amongst yourselves.  Some possible topics:

  • Interesting call & reversal of said call on Scott Rolen in the 5th inning
  • 11 total runs scored by both teams in the 5th inning
  • Both starting pitchers’ inability to get out of the 5th inning
  • I guess a lot of stuff from the 5th inning
  • Anything you want

I am amazed that the field umps overruled the plate ump on something like that.

but, pelf still got to 2 outs and a 2-1 score. So no pass on the meltdown.

his last 2 games his ERA is ~10, and his WHIP is 3+. truly, horribly, bad. And since he came off a string of games with some variation of “no stuff but battled” (with varying success), it is concerning. Especially considering he is a head case that was supposed to be in remission.

but, props to Neive for 3 strong innings to keep them in the game, and to save the pen. Just too bad the offense shot the wad in the 5th.

oh, and who would have thought we would be rooting for the Phils to win to help otu the Mets!

oh, and saw elsewhere that Jerry said that blanco is the BU 1B and 3b now.

guess Ike and David better take care of themselves, since neither one is coming off the field anytime soon, unless they have to leave on a stretcher!

Does anyone doubt Chris Carter is the odd-man out in the dugout? He should at the very least be the backup 1B, if not 3B in an emergency. stupid. He also no longer seems to get the key pinch hitting roles. Also, good riddance Tatis, then again, said ‘flaw’ reared it’s head later when they didn’t have a righty to pinch hit with. (Except they did, in Henry Blanco, but they couldn’t use him..because Jerry thinks he’s the backup CI..)

Jerry gets credit for coming out an arguing that ridiculous play to keep Barajas from getting thrown out, but Thole probably should’ve been in the game instead of the ice cold Barajas anyway..

jerry still lives in his own world. Carter has to be the BU 1B, but jerry probably just forgot it. Or as usual, he is tossing his players under the bus.

Thole starting though is starting to look like a viable option.

and as bad as tatis has been with the bat, at least he fit a defined role. without him, thy probably do need a reshuffling.

and assuming beltran does come back next week, an OF has to go. Everyone figured it would be feliciano, but who knows, maybe it will be carter?

The banishments that Jerry dishes out on a consistent basis is mind boggling. Yes, Carter has not lived up to animal hype. But it seems like 2 bad games and I’ll see you in a month.

And speaking of animals, 2 thoughts. Votto not on the Allstar team… A crying shame. And that gun down by Frenchy… Umm, his arm is what they call golden.

Also, why is it that they finally get the 7th pitcher and now will basically play with 8 pitchers in the bullpen through to the break?

This game shouldn’t have got that out of hand in the 5th. Yes, it was a horrible decision by the umps, but Pelf let it get under his collar. He had every right to be pissed but you have to come back and get those outs, not give up 3 more extra base hits. I think the blown strike call was the straw that broke the camels back but still…I know it’s easier said than done but that’s what he’s getting paid for. That’s what a big league pitcher is all about.

Glad to see the boys didn’t lay down and die though. They just fell a little short in mounting their comeback…

he was not pitching well before that. Lots of base runners. and don’t forget, he had managed to load the bases with no outs in the 5th anyway.

but yeah, if it was losing his cool, that was not good. but he got the next 2 outs after rolen, and really lost because his pitches sucked. Not like he was walking the farm and balking!

I agree his pitching wasn’t all that sharp from the get go yesterday. But I think Pelf has progressed to the point that even with less than his best stuff, he does a better job this year of working around that, for the most part.

He just lost his cool, by his own admission, after the ump debacle and that called ball that was a strike. If not for that last bad call, he might have got out of that inning with less runs. And less runs, we probably would have won.

        Oh well….lesson learned, I hope…
