This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Johan is Da Man !!!!” Edition 07-07-10

Just when you have lost all confidence in Johan Santana’s ability to be the Ace of this staff, He comes back to prove us wrong !! In the last two games that he has pitched he has let up one run in sixteen innings – Last night being a thre hit , complete came shutout !! This shutout marks the seventh of his career. It was a relief to see that he had all his pitches working for him, and his velocity seems to get stronger as the game got longer ( it hovered in the low to mid ’90′s for most of the game). You see this is why I feel this team has a chance to do great things this year, when one guy falters ( Pelf) , the next guy tries to pick him up (Johan). And it was also great to see Johan help his own cause with that two out solo shot (which believe it or not was the first homer of his career ! All I could say was that after Jason Bay made that error in the ninth inning, I expected General Jerry to pull Johan for K-Rod – but thankfully Jerry knew better than to mess with an artists masterpiece !
It was also great to see the catalyst- Jose Reyes back in the line up after a weeks absence. He went 2-4 with a run scored .
And in what I guess is also good news, Oliver Perez pitched in his second rehab game last night. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking three for our St. Lucie affiliate. Ollie struck out seven and hit a batter. No news on how his velocity is.

And with that said …. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

                                                                                                          ” Our Ace !!”

Back up outfielder from 1975, Bob Gallagher is 62 (1948).

Back up infielder/outfielder from last season, Andy Green is 33 (1977).

Mo Vaughn has decided to vacation in Antarctica until this oppressive heat wave is over! He was quoted as saying ” This ain’t hot !!  This is convection oven hot !!!”

So encouraging to see that pitching performance from Johan last night, especially against one of the better hitting clubs in the league.

I read Greg Prince’s book. Great read, especially for someone like myself who became a Met fan just a year before Greg. Many of those snippits in Met history he used brought back so many memories…..

I guess krod didn’t “need” the work (dickey should take notes on how to shooo Jerry off).

I for one was not worried much about Johan. First off he is a better 2nd half pitcher than first and second, he had an easy issue to adjust. Johan was just being stubborn in not accepting an adjustment on his delivery….an adjustment that MLB network broke down 2 weeks ago. I’m glad he finally came around though. Also kudos for getting the first HR, we try and call it every at bat in the dugout…glad for once to be right.

Oh I agree – I just found his lack of consistancy worrisome

Now, to take the Rubber Match and then 2 of 3 next series and we are where we wanted to be, 4-2 and prob. 1 game back if not tied for 1st at the AS break. I’d have taken that in a NY minute had you offered that to me in February for sure.

If everything goes well – we might be in 1st place by the all star break

I can live with tied or 1 game back.

just need the phils to take tonights game (and the mets of course), then 2-3 from the bravos = a tie, and a sweep puts us 2 games up!

And a free beer for a Met’s Baseball card? Maybe having Juan Samuel, Vince Coleman, Bobby Bo or Franky V in a Met’s uni will finally bring some benefit!

I got a tug card sitting on my desk, but they can’t keep that one!

Great job by Johan last night. You so rarely see those kinds of performances these days, that when you get one, it’s a real treat for everyone I think including the team. I thought about Tom Seaver last night when he used to call the games and I couldn’t help but think that he was smiling somewhere in Wine Country last night.

it was a great performance by Johan…hopefully his tipping pitches has come to an end.

Ollie seems to be adjusting well in St. Lucie. I hope he likes it down there. Santana is da man. Time to ride that pony to the big show.

Anyone worried about Pelf? It seems that the league has caught up to his splitter… or is he just having bad couple starts?
