The NY Mets Bullpen in July may be suffering from the recent heat wave because so far the Mets Bullpen ERA is 6.14 14th in the N.L.

Yeah it doesn’t look good but I refuse to form an opinion based on any 6 game sample in a 162 game season. If I did that I would think Jeff Francoeur is the best player ever.

True. Take out Krod’s blow up and it reduces dramatically.
What are the season results?

Yes I wouldn’t form an opinion either. Just something to keep an eye on that’s all.

One disturbing trend in these stats is that with the exception of Nieve’s long man work, not one pitcher has averaged an inning pitched per appearance.
To me that is the manager’s philosophical problem. In six games, Feliciano, Parnell and Dessens have already made 4 appearances. And to make those appearances they had to warm up just the same as if they were pitching a whole inning. Just let someone pitch an inning for crying out loud.

Yeah, I think that speaks also to Manuel not trusting Feliciano or Dessens as more than OOGY’s.

well their numbers this season do suggest Manuel has reason to

In general I would agree but specifically with Feliciano at this stage I would prefer he NOT throw a full inning if that involves pitching to RH hitters in a close game.

I agree re: Feliciano.
But the rest of the guys need to pitch in order to save each other from excess work (even if the excess work is in the bullpen). And in Parnell’s case, he needs to pitch for developmental reasons.

Understood. Any manager of a contender/faux contender has to tread the line between winning and development. I have no idea where that line is and therefore how to judge the balance as being appropriate or not.

it is only 14 IPs. a blip on the season.
And I agree 100% with young/wanny about Jerry over micromanaging the pen. Let guys go 1-2 and have some days off. NOt pitching everyone every day, and having them warm up on the others.
Oh, except for the 1-2 guys he doesn’t like, that pitch 1 time per week!

well you all know my opinions on the bullpen so i wont delve into that
i do think what would make a dramatic impact would be an 8th inning guy (like Joel Hanrahan) that gives Manuel the luxury of using Feliciano and Dessens as lefty/righty specialists as well moving Takahashi into the rotation.
K-Rod, Hanrahan, Feliciano, Dessens, Takahashi, Parnell and 1 of Igarashi, Nieve, Acosta, Misch to me is very solid pen.
if we add Lilly we would have all 5 SP with an ERA under 4 and probably the best 1-6 hitters in the NL when Beltran returns. That to me is a WS contender and probably the best team in the NL…

Current relievers 2010 L/R splits:
Nieve
vs RHH .202/.324/.319/.643
vs LHH .250/.326/.800/1.126
Feliciano
vs RHH .319/.424/.389/.812
vs LHH .242/.299/.339/.637
Valdes
vs RHH .241/.351/.329/.680
vs LHH .341/.341/.636/.977
Igarashi
vs RHH .318/.418/.545/.964
vs LHH .200/.294/.300/.594
Dessens
vs RHH .171/.286/.293/.578
vs LHH .313/.313/.375/.688
Yes they are all small samples (just 2010) but for the most part (except Dessens IMO) they are pretty stark and some (Igarashi, Valdes) are counter-intuitive. But looking at these numbers I can understand a manager maybe not wanting to just leave these guys in to face hitters of both sides in a close game.

I wasn’t going to include KRod anyway as he’s the closer but I see I forgot Parnell, so
Parnell
vs RHH .208/.296/.250/.546
vs LHH .429/.429/.429/.857

Nice Grave!
So Manuel looking at matchups sees
vs Lefties
F. Nieve – .250/.326/.800/1.126
P. Feliciano – .242/.299/.339/.637
R. Igarashi – .200/.294/.300/.594
H. Takahashi – .242/.306/.318/.624
vs Righties
F. Nieve – .202/.324/.319/.643
R. Valdes – .241/.351/.329/.680
E. Dessens – .171/.286/.293/.578
B. Parnell – .208/.296/.250/.546
Nieve being the one he may be most comfortable facing both righties and lefties.

which is why manuel doesnt let one guy go a whole inning, especially in crucial spots…

for giggles your boy Hanrahan
vs RHH .193/.256/.289/.545
vs LHH .191/.321/.404/.726
Hanrahan holds LHH to a lower BAA than Dessens but gives up more SLG to them. I don’t see him as being a significant improvement over Dessens in terms of pitching a full inning against hitters from both sides and I would hope the Mets would aim higher if acquiring bullpen help.

7/8/2010-1:39pm at 1:39 pm (UTC -4)
Also if H. Takahashi is back in the pen his breakdown overall as a starter and a reliever combined is as follows.
Takahashi
vs RHH .282/.350/.464/.813
vs LHH .242/.306/.318/.624

Jerry doesn’t understand that some pitchers, like Mejia and apparently Iggy and Valdes, fare better against the opposite hand so to speak. He just robotically operates in a L v. R world.
In any event, some of these numbers might come a bit closer with increased samples.
GravediggerHebner
7/8/2010-1:40pm at 1:40 pm (UTC -4)
I sure hope so on your final point.
It’s very important so I’ll say it again, these samples are very small. I don’t have it right in front of me right now but IIRC Parnell has face 14 LH batters. His numbers especially but all the guys’ numbers really could change drastically with a handful of successful confrontations.

Contract is up in 10 days and going to get a Droid X or Incredible. I can’t wait. I was always a happy Verizon customer but I had to get the 3g when it came out. Absolutely love the device but I can’t make a call because AT&T is the worst.
Also it will be nice to get Flash capabilities if i grab the Droid X.
