According to Ken Rosenthal of the MLB Network, Cliff Lee has been traded to the Texas Rangers in a 6 player deal.
The Rangers will get Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe( a right hand pitcher)
The Mariners get Justin Smoak(1B) and 3 other players

actually, it might not just be the wallet now. THe Astros are kow to want the moon for their pets, so after Lee got SMoak, the asking price probably went up! Ignoring the fact of course that Seattle paid all the money in the deal.
still, I don’t care about the wilpons money. I do care about the prospects. Although I guess I do care about the money if they spend it all on Oswalt, and have none left for other players!
Although right now, if you add Roy, the only holes to fill for 2011 are RF (with a ton of internal cheap options), 2B hopefully (ditto) and bench/pen arms, which are cheap.
so go ahead, eat the money and save the talent Omar!

well Pagan will be your RF so that solves that. I think Castillo comes back as they wont eat Ollie and Luis in one offseason. Thole will split with Barajas or Blanco so thats easy.

I agree with Oleo. My new crush is on Oswalt. Not sure about that package (probably too steep if they are taking back the salary). So throw in Ollie, or take out F Mart and substitute a lower level guy.
But even if it was those 3, what the hell, it’s worth a shot. Any chance the Stros have a better RP they can toss into the deal too (like the M’s did?)

I’ve soured on Oswalt, and we don’t really need an Ace/A+ pitcher anyway. Lily is cheap and effective. can even throw in NY tested if you like.

well, let’s see if we can agree on at least 2 things:
1) we are both glad the Lee quest is over
2) Anybody but Ollie.
Oswalt does still concern me, but I think it is one of those situation where once it is done, you will forget about all the background and just hope it works and enjoy the ride!

Ed Price of Fanhouse.com comments that the Rays didn’t want to give up any significant prospects for Lee (via Twitter), while the Mets simply didn’t have the caliber of prospects that Seattle was looking for. Price notes, however, that Jeremy Guthrie could be on the Mets’ radar screen.
The Mets could use this Lee deal as a guideline, however, tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney. The Mets could follow the Rangers’ example and try to get a trading partner to add money into a deal, since Olney reports that New York won’t be able to add to their payroll before the deadline.

olney has no clue about that. He just cant know anything for sure.
It makes no real sense to unload extra prospects to try an dsave a few $. If they are in that bad of a shape, don’t make a trade, and keep the prospects to use, since they don’t get paid much!
anyway, Guthrie would not be a bad choice at all. Pretty good, reasonable contract, locked in for at least next year I am pretty sure. As long as the return is minor, great.
But not THole + Fmart to get Balt. to throw in some salary relief! More like Gee and Mets take the contract.
