The Sunday Question

As the Mets limp to  the All Star Break, today’s question is about the future of this team.

What do you expect this team to do in the second half of the season?  What will be their final record and will they make the playoffs?

I expect great things – buy I always have high expectations that come crashing down

I believe Omar will once again fail to bring in any noteworthy players at the deadline (although his hands may be tied by lack of money). I see him bringing in a depth SP to go to AAA as he loves to catch lightning in a bottle. I also see him doing the same with 1 or 2 bullpen arms.

If one of those depth signings works out, then i believe we have a chance but unless we get pitching like we did in June the playoffs are probably a win or two out of our reach. I guess 87-75.

How can the mets be in the largest sports media market & be strapped for cash ? I hope those reports are wrong or else the fans will once again turn their backs on this team if Ollie is the “answer” to the rotation

Well, the trade deadline is the 31st. that leaves 20 days… I hope Toronto decides to sell and Marcum and a BP arm can be had from them. Other than them, Baltimore, Houston, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland and Arizona are the only ones really out of it that would sell. At least the Mets aren’t in any of those clubs divisions, so that should help some. I didn’t include KC, Oakland or Pittsburgh, as they don’t have much to offer. You’ll figure Toronto is going to ask for a lot in return. Same for Arizona. I think it’s going to go down to the wire and someone is going to overpay. Unless that overpay is for Haren, Oswalt, Lilly (I guess… Type A status helps) or Marcum (my new fan fav!), I’m going to be very frustrated with overpaying for a #4 only to miss the playoffs.

The NL West is tight, so no sellers out there for the foreseeable future. I think so many buyers, it’s going to be a sellers market. Supply and Demand.

I said I wasn’t going to make any predictions early on and I’m sticking to that.

That being said, I still think we have a very good shot at making the playoffs but only if we don’t stay with the status quo right now. We need another SP, one not named Ollie. If Ollie can come back and help, fine. I just don’t think he’ll be the answer.

Another BP arm wouldn’t hurt either. Then again, if Jerry doesn’t stay with some kind of rotation in that BP too, we may see ups and downs the entire second half. Just pick an 8th inning guy and give him a fair shot. My vote is with Parnell.

The offense as currently constructed, isn’t getting it done either. Can’t ask for much more from Pagan and Wright. Bay really needs to figure it out. Beltran’s bat hopefully will provide a much needed boost. HoJo should be working with Ike. And as much as some really don’t want to hear it, we could use Castillo back sooner rather than later.

Just me….I’m not “expecting” anything!…THATs why most of this season’s been a great joy to me.
I didnt think even if things went well we’d be better than the Braves or Phils and we’d struggle to be a .500 team…So, what do I know???
This is and will turn into another disapointment though if we con’t to
fade b/c the gap b/t us the Braves and Phils isn’t great…If theres one
at all. We know what we need, atleast
    a solid #3SP, a solid 8th inning guy
and another Bat. We also know that Omar likely thinks the SP is named Ollie and the Bat is Bel-Tron.
So, maybe he finds a RP who can get some outs in the 7th or 8th AND we
    con’t to be a quasi-contender….
    OR…Maybe not…..Who knows???
I was alredy wrong about this team coming out of spring, except for
    my thoughts about our Pitching.
Didnt expect much from Maine or Ollie
BUT really, really felt the BP wasn’t
anywhere good enough to help carry
a team who didnt have enough SPers to
provide enough quality innings AND in
the end almost everyone would blame Jerry for blowing out the Pitching when in reality Omar just didnt give him enough quality AND quantity in the
    BullPen.
I don’t think The WC is realistic unless Chipper and Glaus go down
since The Phils have again shown
why THAT group has been the best team in the NL for the past 3or4 years.
AND they’re only just getting healthy!
I just hope and pray Omar doesnt trade out a few of our top young guys
    for Benson/Victor Zambrano type Pitchers!

Now we will see what this team is all about. After today this team will define itself over the remaining 74 games rather than the 1st 88.

That last statement is oh so true. Then again, watching Kazmir give up 13 ERs last night makes the sting hurt a little less. Now, instead of jumping off a dock and doing a face plant into a Man-O’-War, it’s more like doing a belly flop on one. That trade still pains me.

My pre-season expectations for the Mets were that they would come close but ultimately fall short (in a non-collapsing way) of the post season and I still feel that way barring, as Fongy notes, some key injuries/falloff by a competitor.

He notes the Braves/Phillies, I also concern myself with whichever of the Rockies/Giants/Dodgers doesn’t win the West and whichever of the Reds/Cards don’t win the Central because my belief is if the Mets are going to the post season it will be as a wildcard. My hope is however it unfolds it does so in an exciting way.

If they play their current percentage (.540) over their final 75 games (including today) they’ll win 88 games. Can they equal or outdo their 1st half .540 and will that be enough? I’m not sure they can. I think it will take more than just the return of a mostly-healthy Carlos Beltran to do so.

I expect the mets to battle for third place and that’s it.Its over for this team it was a good run helped by the indians and orioles take those six wins away and thay are at 500 here we are a couple of wins in a row will help and atlanta back to reality but the phils will get pitching and they will get healthy again and win it.

  7. stickguy

well, if Beltran is for real and can actually make it through the year, and Reyes does not miss too much longer, and Pelf actually remembers how to pitch at some point, they will make another run.

Still predicting 88-90 wins, and a run at the playoffs. But, could esaily see them just missing out.

with the consolation prize of Jerry being axed.

and to make Kingman happy, next year will be a much better year, if they can maange to add 1 more solid to above average SP, and a few minot parts (like no frenchy starting, and a new 2B).
