CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis of the Binghamton Mets has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 11th. He won that honor by hitting .469/BA – .844/SLG – 6/2B – 2/HR – 9/R – 6/RBI over seven games.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis will also represent the Eastern Division at the 2010 Eastern League All-Star Game Wednesday night in Harrisburg, PA.

kids got talent. The nice thing about him, unlike a few of the other strong bats in the system, is that he is considered a plus defender, and plays a “real” position (and a premium one to boot). The fact that he could eb getting close as a CF, where the mets conveniently have an opening in 2012 (or sooner, if Beltrans knee gives out), is a bonus.
He really needs to get dialed in on pitch selection and maanging the strike zone a little better, but that seems to be trending up too. Get the BB% and OBP up a bit and he should be ready!

Maybe it’s Met bias, but the minor leagues these days look like they have some low hanging fruit on them. Players like Frenchy and eventually Beltran and Castillo should be replaceable in house. Not that signing a Carl Crawford wouldn’t be welcome, but you get my point. Cheap in house talent, a la Tampa Bay, is the way to go. I do wish there was more pitching ready to make the leap, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s better than it was before, for sure.
