According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNY: “Right-hander Mike Pelfrey‘s first second-half start will move from Saturday to Monday because of neck stiffness, New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel announced Friday.”
Taka will make the start Saturday and Johan will stay on schedule for Sunday.

And as many beat writers pointed out, they’re going to wait until they fly again to start Pelfrey. (he slept funny on the plane supposedly) No moving Santana up to still extended rest tomorrow and pitching him Sunday.

Perhaps they wanted to give him an extra day to rest it. Perhaps Santana had been preping for Sunday for a week now.

Extra day to rest it? they don’t even know how he’s oging to feel tomorrow, never mind sunday. He hurt it on a plane, so they’ll wait until he’s on a plane again before letting him pitch. Pelfrey threw a bullpen session yesterday, so they had to know it was bothering him, so you can curb Santana throwing too much inbetween starts in case you want to start him instead of the guy you’re looking to replace in the rotation in Takahashi (not that he’s bad).

Again Johan is on “schedule” now because that is where they set him up to pitch. They determined the rotation before the break. Also you know for sure that they knew they were pushing Pelfrey back yesterday?
I just don’t see the need to complain about it. I don’t see the difference in keeping Johan where they have him and switching Taka and Pelfrey.
Just because he hurt it on a plane does not mean that for the rest of the year a plane ride will hurt his neck again. It’s a balance. They give him an extra day to make sure he’s good instead of thinking he may be good Sunday.

i don’t know they knew they were pushing him back yseterday, I just know that he was throwing, pre-game. So they had to be considering it. Plan for all possibilities.
Every day of rest Johan gets is a higher possibility that he’ll make one less start this year. And that start will be Takahashi, or Perez.
It’s like how he’d slot Cora in second when he replaced someone in an emergency. He doesn’t adjust things to make them better when he has an opportunity.

Ceetar, you honestly think that Johan would not go on 3 days rest if that one day mattered?

They’re pushing him back two days. so it’d be two days rest. And that’s assuming they don’t find another couple of days for him.
I understand the balance about resting him to keep him healthy. But he’ll still have an extra day if you adjust for the fluke situation without slotting in your fifth starter early during a losing streak. He’ll get the extra rest here, then he’ll start on normal rest, and then he’ll get an extra day again due to the off day after the trip. It’s hardly a taxing stretch.

Actually it’s keeping him on the schedule they set for him a week ago, it’s hardly a taxing difference.

Are we really worried about a set schedule? I think Santanas stated he’d rather pitch every fifth day anyway. There’s nothing regular about the schedule it’s on, and it’s not like we should be worried that he wouldn’t be ready to go..

Again, you think Johan had no input as to what day he would start? I thought Jerry was weak and bended to what the players wanted?
Again, it’s one day and a non-issue at this point. There are plenty of off-days and most likely rainouts ahead. They set his day as Sunday and they are keeping it. Not a big deal.

of course, the first word to pop into my head when I saw the “pain in the neck” headline was Jerry!
but hey, if it is bothering him from a plane, then get him in a car and drive him to AZ, plenty of time to make it by monday.
off schedule it seems. Wouldn’t it be more logical to go SF-LA-AZ?
Oh, and I decided to be nice (well, maybe not now) and hold off on my “he got it from whipping his head around watching all the base hits” joke.

probably, but neither flight is overly long. not like they’re flying Florida, Chicago, Washigton or something.

O.K., I love this team but I’m starting to wonder how these guys would fare if they lived the everyday life most of us have. So how many of you, like me, have been on a straight flight from Newark to the west coast jammed in coach like sardines – and that’s after waiting in line I don’t know how long to get through security only so you can wait even more at the gate?
How many of us have had to haul ourselves to work with a ‘twinge’ or two b/c without the paycheck, well….you can’t meet the rent? Well, you get my idea.
I know, I know these guys are ML ball players, some worth millions of dollars but man…talk about taking the ‘Prevention’ to a new level.
