Mets In on Myers?

In a Tweet yesterday Buster Olney had the following to say: “An interesting possibility among the starting pitchers that the Mets are considering: Brett Myers, who is having a good season for HOU.”

Myers is indeed having a very good season for the Astros.  His contract is very reasonable: 10:$3.1M, :$8M mutual option ($2M buyout) (from Cot’s Baseball Contracts) .

Brett has been a very polarizing individual on TRDM.  Many readers are still appalled by his indefensible actions of  the past.  Some readers do not see the Mets front office bringing that type of player in.  Other readers see his value as a guy that can start but also can be a lock-down reliever.

I think Lilly is still the best option for the Mets but Myers is indeed intriguing.  The fact that he can be had for little, cost little and has a reasonable option for next season moves him up on the list for sure.

Would he help? Absolutely. Does his ability to pitch out of the pen come the 3 man rotation of the playoffs make him more appealing? Absolutely. Is he going to be the #2/3 pitcher the Mets need towards the top of their rotation? No. I’m all for him, but I don’t think he is enough.

I don’t like rotation #’s but to say he is not a mid-rotation pitcher ignores his results from this season. He has an ERA under 3.50 and has yet to have a start last under 6 innings.

I hear you, but these are all career bests. Not that I’m a fan of trends, but I see him reverting to something closer to his norms than what he’s putting up this year.

        1. trs86

I guess you could look at it that way. I would seem to think that moving to NY would actually help his numbers.

        2. metsfan4decades

Exactly. Career year this year means big question mark next year.

I’d rather Oswalt, then Lilly than Myers.

I agree with you. By adding Myers, the Mets still don’t distinguish themselves among Bravos or Phillies.

Could he help the Mets to reach the playoffs? Maybe. But he’s no dominant force in the rotation that can shut people down. He’s no Oswalt or Haren or Lily for that matter.

      1. oleosmirf

you cant look at it that way…the idea is to get the best pitcher you can while giving up the least in return.

i’d rather have Lilly but if Lilly cost more in money and in prospects, Myers is still an improvement

There was quite a Mets-community twitter debate about Myers during last night’s game. Polarizing is the perfect word. I don’t want to mis-represent the respective parties involved so check their twitter accounts for accuracy but as I recall it @mikedeeez (writes at Toby Hyde’s blog) was essentially the forgiving Christian willing to take Myers and @hotfootblog felt Myers incident was unforgivable and was unwilling to acquire him, with some other parties chiming in to the discussion. There were some interesting sidebars about the appropriate use of the word “mistake” and so on. It was interesting to follow as it unfolded, at least for me.

I’m just about to read it now so I don’t know what he says yet but Heyman has an available pitchers trade piece out now.

Also interesting that Wally Backman has similar accounts on him yet the Mets fanbase is much more forgiving.

          Did you say Chris Coste?

          1. njstuckintx

That’s why he’s in the minors!

      2. oleosmirf

an 86 Met could kill a man and still be beloved by the fans.

      3. ceetar

Didn’t all that happen after with Wally though?

  3. stickguy

a seriously nasty looking line up tonight.

I think Jerry might have spent too much time at haight-asbury, if you get my drift!

    1. oleosmirf

      interesting to say the least…

  4. asod75

Absolutely ghastly lineup tonight: Tejada, Bay, Wright, Beltran, Francoeur, Davis, Barajas, Cora, Niese. I’m all for getting French some ABs against lefties, but only if Reyes is back in the lineup. Without Jose, this team doesn’t have a guy who can lead off besides Pagan (perhaps Castillo when he’s healthy). Pagan must play if Reyes isn’t in there. How about sitting Bay instead if he’s so hell-bent on playing Francoeur? Not like Bay is ripping the cover off the ball, far from it……

    1. oleosmirf

yea i was certain Beltran would get the day off but I dont like this lineup at all.

i will reserve criticism until after the game though…

      1. stickguy

why wait? It is never too early to pile on the Jerryster!

        1. oleosmirf

because he’s trying to change the lineup up to put a spark in the team. offense has been flat lately. not sure it will work but i understand the madness.

          1. stickguy

generally doing dumb things hoping for an improbable result is the sign of a manager that doesn’t have much of a clue.

I need Knog to weigh in on this. where is that boy?

But yeah, I do understand that Jerry is working with what he has available, and trying to find a mix to get people going. Might not agree with his method, but I understand his reasoning.

          2. oleosmirf

personally i would have given Beltran the day off but if Carlos feels great when he comes to the stadium, how do you take him out?

          3. asod75

Or rest the cold Bay if you have to play Francoeur today. Personally, I’d just sit Francoeur until Reyes is back in the lineup. Interesting note from Rubin: Mets source has Buffalo infielder Justin Turner heading to SF. Could be a DL for Reyes, or maybe they send down Evans or do something with one of the catchers. If Reyes isn’t going to be DL’ed, wouldn’t hurt to have an extra middle infielder. If Evans is going down, could explain why Thole was taking grounders at first, since Jerry would rather have an earthquake and hurricane strike simultaneously than play Carter at first.

          4. stickguy

I guess that makes COra the BU 3B again?

not that it matters. Wright is not coming out of the lineup unless it is on a gurney for the rest of this year.

          5. oleosmirf

im guessing Turner would be backup 3B but as you said thats not important. It makes no sense to DL Reyes now. sitting him for 12 games is unnecessary, the DL trip should have happened back then but thats another story

now and since Beltran is back the need for a RH bat off bench is minimal so im assuming Evans is going down or they place Blanco on “DL”

          6. trs86

Right now it’s just precautionary in case Reyes does go on the dl.

    2. metsfan4decades

Niese better bring his A game tonight b/c this lineup doesn’t inspire run scoring…

      1. stickguy

Neise better bring his bat, since if you set the line up based on offensive ability at this point, he would probably be hitting 6th.

  5. stickguy

Damn. Wish I had thought of this one. Maybe we need to recruit this guy?

I shall call him “Jerry Gump” from now on.

regarding thi slineup: 6 of the 9 guys have an OBP of .302 or lower. That is really, really hard to do.

OK, to be fair, that includes the pitcher and Beltran with his 4 ABs.

tht still leaves 4/8 with an OBP below .300 (I am rounding Frenchy down, since I am in a bad mood and have had a couple beers!)

DOn’t expect too many base runners tonight.

And wouldn’t this be a good time to give Blanco a start? Is the guy even still with theam? I can’t remember the last time I saw him make an appearance.

  7. stickguy

the roster right now is somewhat of a mess. With Reyes being carried as dead wood, it leaves the MI naked. So expect jerry to put reyes in for an emergency defensive inning, and he will go on the (reset) DL the next day!

but, there are going to be some moves happening soon. Castillo is supposed to be back shortly (this weekend? Unelss that meant next weekend, but I assume by the next series). That needs a move. Plus, taka will be going back into the rotation, so they have to decide if they want to run a 6 man pen again. And Reyes, who the hell knows with him, but I vote for DL since there is “no change”

Does that guy have zero pain tollerance, or does he just heal really slowly?

And of course, the great 3 catcher mystery. Is Blanco dead or something?

SO, ideally by this weekend Reyes either comes back (not likely) or hits the DL (do it tomorrow if he can’t start. Have the replacement on hand). Actually, the replacement will probably be castillo. Either Reyes to the DL or tejada down.

Then either send thole down, or put blanco on the DL.

your starters should be reyes/tejada, castillo, wright, davis, thole/barajas, beltran, bay, pagan. ANd no, that is not the batting order (although Jerry might like it).

Bench is Cora, evans, carter, frenchy, thole/barajas (the non starter that day)

This really is not that difficult. And if they want to keep Blanco active, send thole down to play.

ANd get another pen arm up here, assuming that Taka really will go into the rotation.

    1. asod75

Turner supposedly on the way up, so either Evans is going down or perhaps Thole (or Blanco heads to DL). That is, unless Reyes is going to DL and then they don’t have to do anything until Castillo comes back….

      1. oleosmirf

could it be Tejada being traded? i doubt it.

Pelfrey scratched from start but moved to Monday…should we be concerned?

        1. trs86

Just “neck pain”. Got it on the front page.

      2. trs86

Actually last I read Turner is just going to SF in case Reyes hits the DL.

        1. oleosmirf

i read that too but im also reading in between the lines…i highly doubt Reyes is going to the DL. he would miss what 12 games?

          1. stickguy

9 more days after this. his last game was saturday, so the clock starts I assume with Sunday.

          2. oleosmirf

either way we have no use for Nick Evans if Francouer/Pagan/Beltran/Bay is gonna be the primary RH bat off the bench.

i think Turner is gonna replace Evans if they feel Jose will miss 4-6 games or so.

          3. stickguy

if they do that, the bench won’t even be short, since they are only carrying 11 pitchers again, right?

          4. oleosmirf

            correct

          5. trs86

hmm, don’t know. He has not played since the 10th right?

          6. stickguy

yeah, last saturday. so if he hits the DL, depending on how they count the 15 days, he either can come back for the last LA game, or when they start the next homestand.

If they can live without the 7th man in the pen, then I am OK carrying him for a couple more games, but if he can’t play by Monday, then do the DL.

he really is the one that should have the soft label it seems. bad combo of no pain tollerance, and a slow healer!

          7. trs86

            I have no comment.
