Did Ted Lilly’s Performance Last Night vs The Phillies Convince Mets To Trade For Him?

Ted Lilly got on the mound last night and squared off vs the Mets nemesis Philadelphia Phillies. The Cubs won 4-3 but Lilly was not involved in the decision. His final line for the night?

It was tweeted by the Chicago Cubs Online that the Mets were 1 of among 4 teams scouting Lilly last night. It was Lilly’s best start vs the Phillies in 6 career starts vs them since the 1st time he ever faced them back on May 13 2007 where he pitched 8/IP 3/H 1/R 1/ER 6/SO 1/BB.

Was it enough to persuade the Mets to make an offer?

If the Mets beat reporters have accurate information from relevant sources the answer is “no.”

Yesterday afternoon, after Lilly’s day-game performance against the Phils, multiple reporters noted the Mets lack of interest in Lilly citing club concerns with his “drop in fastball velocity.” I immediately tweeted one of the reporters noting that Lilly’s velocity, while it started the season quite low, has been back up within 1 mph of his career average for the last 6 weeks. Somehow I doubt he conveyed that to the Mets.

could be the Mets are doing it on purpose to drive the price down…

      1. GravediggerHebner

Yeah, the Mets are widely acknowledged in and out of the sports world as masterful manipulators…

        1. Mr North Jersey

          lol that hurt Grave. :-)

    Ratliff/Evans and Familia?

    1. stickguy

seems like a good return to me.

That Ratliff has really been flashing his considerable power this year. The MEts have quite a few interesting power hitting OFsnow sprinkled through the system, especially at A+ and AA, and of course the Dudaman at AAA

Don’t worry about the pitching, it’s all Reyes’ fault

  4. metsfan4decades

I still think we need another SP for depth. We got lucky when we lost 2/5s of the original rotation early on – with Dickey and Taka. One more injury, who do we have to step up? Nieve? Misch? Gee? Not very inspiring at all.

We’re taking a big chance second half if we don’t get one pitcher from somewhere, IMO.

    1. oleosmirf

my prediction is no big name player traded for and Omar will get someone like Misch for depth in AAA

      1. johan4cy

        lol… probably.

    Marmol, you tool…..

    1. stickguy

I despise the Phillies. and their fans.

Every Met fan should be outraged if Oswalt gets moved somewhere for some
package which it would be obvious we
    could match or beat.
If Oswalt is willing/wants to Pitch
for us AND if the ‘Stros are willing to accept a very reasonable package,
    say…Tejada,FMart and Meijia…Or
lesser Pitching prospect, AND we don’t
do it b/c of “salary concerns”……
    Well, then….Thats pretty friggin’
    outrageous!!!
Given the assurences Madoff DIDN’T make off with all Freddy’s money,
the new stadium, new network AND
all the MLB money pouring in….
    Pretty friggin’ outrageous!!!!!
….. Do they want to Win a Championship???…Or not so much???

    1. oleosmirf

thats been the stigma surrounding the Wilpons for years, they want to be competitive but they wont go the extra mile to win…

    2. Mr North Jersey

did i miss a breaking news? what spurned this on?

      1. fongy2

Just the chatter about Lilly….And maybe now
the FO not so interested in him….
And word that we might just stick with what we got according to
        MLBTRADERUMORS.COM…

    3. stickguy

one thing I don’t know is we will ever know if he had OK’d a trade to the Mets. So while we may look at the package and say the Mets could have beaten it, if he didn’t wan to come to NY, then it is irrelevant.

also, tejada, F mart and Mejia is not a low price for a full priced pitcher.

      1. fongy2

Stick, my friend I went over this yesterday.
        Oswalt is a legit ACE..
Maybe one of only 15 or so in the game,a couple yrs left on his deal, so its not 2 months and goodbye.
And whos to say FMart,Tejada and Meijia
        don’t turn out to be
        DeJesus,Infante and Dotel???…MAYBE!!!
        …OR…Worse…..
Wouldn’t you trade DeJesus,Infante and Dotel for Oswalt???…
        I would in a heartbeat!

        1. stickguy

I know you would trade any and every prospect. That is clear. I know that none of them will amount to anything, and there is nothing else that you could possibly do with them.

Not like they could use them to fill a need on the Mets (oh wait, all 3 already have). And of course, you could trade them for other players, but why try to conserve prospects for that, when you can ship them all out for a 33 YO pitcher that has a chronic disk problem in his back that shut him down early last year, that is owed close to 40 million (assuming he requires the optin to be picked up).

        2. stickguy

also, I don’t know if Oswalt qualifies as a stud pitcher “ace” at this point, based on his last couple of years. He is having a good year this year, but I don’t think you can put him in the halladya/lee/etc. class.

          1. fongy2

            You’re wrong dude!
            I’m actually biased
            toward keeping
prospects b/c I’ve seen most of them w/Bingo
            Mets!
BUT given that the NL is wide-open,no powerhouse unbeatables there, the fact that we
have guys like Ike,Thole etc already
            here AND
others like Kirk on the way AND that the window for guys like Johan,KRod and Bel-Tron is open NOW…..
            Why would ANYONE be
            thinking
            about 2012,2013 and beyond??
            And Oswalts NOT an ACE???
            And his back problem
            is a Fonzie/Mattingly/Adam Graves type problem???…..
Doesn’t look like that to me.

          2. njstuckintx

Yeah, I’m with you. Give me Oswalt. For Fmart, Mejia and Tejada, I’d want the Astros to pick up half of Oswalt’s salary. For Fmart, Tejada & Gee(?) I could see taking the Oswalt + a little bit o’ cash.

          3. oleosmirf

Oswalt is a legit ace. 30+ starts every season since 2003

Mejia, F-Mart arent going together but Mejia or F-Mart, Tejada and fillers get it done for me…

          4. stickguy

Mejia and Tejada + some filler piece (stoner level?) sounds more reasonable, especially with the Mets taking on a ton of salary.

And I hope you don’t mean that 30 starts makes you an ace!

What scares me a bit about Oswalt is his last s2 years. 2009 was far from acelike, and trending downhill (he turned 32 during the summer). and he shut down early.

Now this year, where he turns 33 next month, he is putting up a career high K/9 (since his 1st year), and career low WHIP and H/9.

THis year screams of outlier. Guys with that career workload on their arm don’t suddenly get that much better (statistically speaking). And is it reasonable to expect him to keep it up through 2012, when he will be 35?

          5. njstuckintx

psst. Clemens. (but that’s what a couple thousand PEDs can do) :P

          6. stickguy

maybe he is on the Yankee medical plan. Just hope he has good masking agents!

other than that, the only logical reason is that it is a fluke year so far. In a 1/2 season, lots of funny things can happen. Get a bunch of crappy opponents, favorable weather, sun spots, whatever.

And I have not seen anything to indicate that he unveiled some spiffy new pitch

  7. trs86

“”people familiar with the team’s thinking” lol. Hell that could be, what the janitor? Steve Phillips? Reporting has gotten plain ridiculous.

  8. fongy2

Stick, ya gotta give up something to get something! Last I checked teams
can draft and sign FAs every yr.
Isn’t it worth the gamble to get an
Ace, even an aging one and pair him
with another similar guy in Johan AND
a potential real good #2&3 in Pelf&Niese and try to Win in all???
…OR …Just con’t to wait and hope for 2012,2013 and beyond when Johan&KRod will be a couple yrs older,
Beltran likely gone AND who knows what
    we’ll really get out of Tejada(who I like) and FMart(not so much)???….
If anything???….At least TRY and give it a real serious run?? For themselves(The FO),the fans and guys
    like Johan,KRod,Beltran,Wright,Reyes
and Bay?…All of whom are still right
in or still within memory of their primes???

    1. stickguy

funny, but I like F Mart way more than tejada.

Heck, they could bring up Tovar next year to pretty much do what tejada is doing! (j/k there, sorta, so don’t get your panties in a bunch)

      1. fongy2

        Boxers Homey!!!…
        FMart=David DeJesus….
        Maybe!!….In a couple,
        three,four years…..
Tejada, I’m not quite sure about. Looks like
a real solid glove and arm, should hit some,
        BUT .300+?, no sure’bout that…And is
        obviously never gonna
hit for any kind of power…AND since his
foot speed is very ordinary,is never gonna be a base stealer. So…Likely not a top, or obviously
middle of the order guy. THAT type of player…Infante,Izturis, etc gonna hold up a chance to get another top-tier Pitcher and make a World series run this and next year?

    2. stickguy

I am also fine with trying to get a player that can put you over the top. Whether one SP at the deadline is enough, who knows, but I also don’t support wildly overpaying and depleting the system unnecessarily if they don’t have to.

There are some fans that believe in the “what’s one more” theory. That is, if you are giving up layer X and Y, just throw in Z. Then heck, why not W. And so on.

every prospect traded, you don’t have any more.

      1. fongy2

        2011 Draft and amateur
FA signing only 9months away my friend.
I understand and am thankful once The M’s asked for Ike etc for
Lee Omar told them, yeah thanks but no thanks….But FMart and/or Tejada as centerpieces holding up
        Oswalt???…If so, just
        dumb…And cheap….And
        short sighted…And not
        really that serious to
        try to win in all….
        FOR THE FIRST TIME IN
        25 FRIGGIN YEARS!!!!!
