Ugh third place !!Well so far the Mets return from the All Star break is not going at all how I had imagined. But with the exception of last nights abortion of a game , the Mets have looked pretty good from a defensive point of view. Before you chastise me about trying to stay positive you have to admit that the Giants have one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball. And the Mets were hardly out of the first two games of this series, losing by a combined three runs. Have the bats fallen into a slumber? Yes they have , and I still have yet to figure out the Jerry Manuel’s Guide to Strategy, but I feel that he won’t be leading this team by the time spring training breaks ( fingers crossed). Lets face it , Beltran has been hitting since his return to action, it just that there haven’t been men on base for him to drive in. I think Ike Davis might be breaking out of the prolonged slump that he has been mired in , with the two homers that he hit last night It’s just seems that without Reyes this team is lethargic. Also we must face the fact that Takahashi is better suited coming out of the bullpen, but here lies the rub ( avert your eyes if you don’t want to read this!)
It s more than likely that Oliver Perez will take his spot in the rotation !!!Last night in a rehabilitation game for the Buffalo Bisons, Ollie” The Sultan Of Suckitude”Perez, went 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out seven. This sounds good right? Well Ollie also gave up a two run homer that tied the game at three, and there are no reports on how his velocity was. My biggest fear is that Oliver will get at the minimum two starts once he is re-activated, perform mediocrely , the Mets will decide to not go after another starting pitcher and we will be destined to finish in third place this year with a record slightly over .500 ( I hate being negative – trust me) My question is at this point aren’t all the games important? We are five games behind the division leading Braves and a half a game behind the resurgent Phillies. Can we afford to put this head case back into the rotation, where it is quite possible he might damage the psyche of the team again if he still pitches horribly ? I know the Mets have about 20 million reasons why they won’t give up on him, but sometimes you have to hold your nose when throwing out the trash!

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Joe Torre, the first and only player/manager for the Mets is 70 (1940) . Even though he was successful with the New York Yankees, I could never feel any ill will against him. He was the first Mets manager that I ever had any recollection of, and he did his best trying to manage a inferior product.
Mets first base coach ,Razor Shines is 54 (1956) . Hey at least he isn’t coaching third base this year !
New York Mets signed free agent pitcher, Danny Frisella on July 18, 1966. Danny pitched for the Mets from ’67-’72 when he was traded to the Braves for George Stone. He died tragically on New Years Day 1977 in a freak dune buggy accident.
Does anyone else here thing that Pablo Sandoval might be Mo Vaughn’s love child?

Actually there was a report on Ollie’s velocity.
“His breaking pitches were sharp and he was constantly ahead of hitters, going to a three-ball count just twice over the first five innings. His velocity is still middling at best, topping out at 88 mph.”
“He was pitching and that was good to see,” said manager Ken Oberkfell. “He didn’t have great velocity but he threw strikes with his breaking ball and his fastball. He did a good job. He looked like he had a lot of confidence and I think that’s something he hasn’t had recently.”
“The Mets would like Perez to accept an option to Buffalo but he’s been refusing. Asked if he might reconsider, Perez said, “I don’t know. I have to speak with my agent.”

I don’t or rather I hope he doesn’t come up and with rumors of Mets trying to get rid of him combined with the report confirmed by Ollie that the Mets are trying to get him to take an assignment down at AAA I hope his days are numbered.

Everyone knows I was one of the biggest Ollie supporters but even I know this is a sunk cost.
There is no way Ollie is going to be successful at the major league level with an 88MPH fastball. No possible way.
Ollie previously got by b/c he was young, he was healthy, he had a strong arm and when his command was on, he was virtually unhittable. He never really did learn how to pitch, as opposed to throwing, and now that he’s had some health problems he has absolutely no clue how to make the adjustments.
Putting him back in this rotation is a mistake. If they do, he’d better get the Maine treatment. Yank him the minute it’s not working.
Oh…and get another SP – now.

Well, Omar’s not exactly known for wheeling and dealing a lot near the deadline, so I’m not so confident. I agree, I want nothing to do with Ollie in the major league rotation, but I also don’t want Takahashi there anymore (he should be in the pen). Misch has had a really nice first half at Buffalo, but I guess no one wants him up.

well heres one thing we can’t kill jetty on
“Obviously, if you see something out there better, then I don’t think there’s anything wrong with upgrading,†Manuel said. “Because we have to evaluate from what we have seen, not wait and say let’s see what happens.†– his thoughts on obtaining a front line starter

The sultan of sucktitude….that name might stick lol
It looks more and more apparent that omars acquisition this deadline will be the activation of oliver perez. The thing is most people forgot what taka and dickey are, they were replacements for john maine and oliver perez. They were fill in’s…a roll of the dice. Taka has done an ok job but he needs to go into the bullpen. Dickey however has performed to a level that you cant take him out of the rotation because there really isnt a better option. Unfortunately 12 million dollars is the exception to this rule. Oliver will be back and he will start over taka unless omar can find a way to dump him.

It’s two fold. I don’t think Omar WANTS Ollie to be the addition but he’s also not going to do something crazy to keep that from happening. At this point what is best for the team may in fact be giving Ollie a few starts and shifting Taka back to the pen.

I think no one wants him to do something crazy either. For example trading Jon Niese and Ike Davis for Cliff Lee, that’s crazy.
He is expected to improve the team if that means adding Ollie many wont like it but as long as Ollie is Plan x-y-Z then what can anyone say? He at least explored all options and just couldnt get a deal done so he had no choice but to resort to Ollie.
I know some feel Ollie can still help (Not me) and if he is brought up he will have to help because he has used up all his rope and other than those few that still believe in him no one else will have any patience with him.

I don’t think adding/trading for another SP would be to keep Ollie from the rotation. The two shouldn’t be considered in the same decision.
I would like nothing better than to see the Ollie of ’07 – heck even ’08, come back and help this team. I just have no faith he can do it. And for the record, I really don’t like Ollie’s public comments about being released. Regardless of what he thinks, what his – or Boras’ – game plan is, he ought to be spitting platitudes about coming back and helping the team – period.
I have a lot of faith in this team as currently constructed but I think it’s a big mistake not adding a solid SP. Pitching is going to decide our fate and right now, it’s looking a little shaky. Adding Ollie does nothing to help that.

Whether or not you agree whether Perez can or cannot ever pitch again, he’s going to remain the #1 option until the trade deadline. It’s probably just posturing. This is how things go. Omar tries to sell opposing GMs that he’s not desperate for a SP, etc. Perez’s line from yesterday only helps that cause. If he repeats that type of performance, there’s probably a fair shot, if no upgrades are here, he’ll come up. (talking 6+, positive K/BB, QS at the least) If that’s the case, it’s a mistake to throw him out in front of fans that for some reason would rather him fail than succeed (and will be vocal about it, unlike if they activate him on the road)

regardless of what was reported yesterday, I still would not be surprised to see ollie get the next Taka start. I doubt they will pick up a replacement by then.
Looking at the timing, it does make some sense. Assuming, of course, that Ollie is (as I always figured), going to get 1 more chance to add some value (could be a trade, more likely pitching).
if he replaces taka next start, he would have 2 starts (22nd, 27th or so) before the trade deadline. That would prove what he can or can’t do, so he either ends up staying in the rotation, getting traded (yeah, right) or somehow dumped (BP, cut, DL, whatever).
and of course, it tells the team whether they absolutely have to make a trade or not.
2 starts isn’t going to (hopefully) kill them. Maybe best case is they score a ton and win, with ollie proving he needs to go.

I sure hope I’m wrong and there is still time for the team to prove me wrong but I’m getting the feeling that the big July acquisitions are going to be Carlos Beltran, Oliver Perez & Luis Castillo, perhaps with some Sean Green and/or Ryota Igarashi thrown in.
