Probably won’t be at all. They don’t normally take hitters from BK their first year and promote them the same year.

Isn’t San Diego State considered almost “AA” level though? Or only for pitching? Hey, maybe the kid has something insightful, scouting wise, to say about Strasburg.

Wilmer Flores 2-4 with a GS.
I really hope they hold onto this kid for awhile, see if he’s the real deal.
He’s too young to ‘sell high’ and get back anything worth it in return anyway.

Ok.. so it sounds like Lily is out of the picture now according to the Metsblog. Mets have turned their attention to Westbrook now.
WTF??? What does Westbrook do for this team? Sure he’ll be a solid mid-rotation guy, but with Pelf struggling like this, do we honestly think adding Westbrook will increase the chance of making playoffs? I don’t think so.

BUT I think thats about as good as its gonna getfor us at the deadline.
Omar boxed himself in A LONG TIME AGO,
with Castillo’s contract,mis-handling Beltran’s injury AND of
course Ollie.

Not only that, but it seems like the Mets are so hung up on their prospects that no team is willing to deal with them.
I understand what you want to keep your prospects, but this season is going down the drains real fast and you gotta do something. And Westbrook is definitely not the solution here.

The St. lucie game was rain delayed in the 1st. that is why Allen only went .1 innings.
ANd nice to see Kirk with 2 BBs. it seems to be a common problem with Met top hitting prospects. lousy BB rate and OBP. F Mart, Kirk, Flores. If these guys don’t start walking more 9and in some cases striking out less) they will never make the leap to stardom.
But, I guess chicks dig the long ball!
And that shafer kid at Kingsport was a 34th round pick, and is currently 2nd in the league in BA 9something like .373). Now that is productin from late in the draft!

last thought to leave you with. This is cribbed from Toby’s minors blog. Just think about what he says at the end about the manager, and see how you think it relates to the Jidiot.
” Brooklyn leads the NYPL in all triple crown categories, and then some. They are 1st in: BA, runs scores, hits, doubles, triples, homeruns, rbi, TB, SLG., and OPS. That is remarkable. I wonder how much of that has to do with the fiery attitude that Cyclone manager Wally Backman brings. Players have to play and perform yes, but a good manager can get the most out of his teams talents”

Maybe….BUT I’d think a Mgr
in low-A ball should be more about teaching than motivating. If 20y/o kids with
a yr or less of pro ball under their belts can’t get motivated, you’ve got the wrong kids in your system!

I don’t know enough about the minor leagues and how “it all works” to know if this is true or not but I have read in the past from multiple sources that the Mets organization sends talent to short-A Brooklyn that most other organizations would send to other levels of their system with winning games in mind ahead of development.

As far as the Mets and any trades go I’m leaning toward don’t trade away anything useful.
My late March/early April assessment of this club was that it wasn’t quite good enough and they haven’t shown me anything consistently enough to make me change that opinion so I am still leaning toward hold on to as much of what you think you can use going forward and only trade for something that helps you beyond 2010. I don’t see much point in trading for free-agent-to-be Westbrook.

You are saying that this team is not a playoff team?

I’m saying it’s not likely!

7/20/2010-1:28pm at 1:28 pm (UTC -4)
Short answer: yes that’s what I’m saying.
Long answer: in late spring training I thought that overall the pitching staff would be a weakness too great to overcome and that a lot of things would have to break the right way for the Mets and the wrong way for their competitors for the Mets to be there at the end. It hasn’t specifically unfolded much like I thought it would at all (which reinforces to me how different baseball reality is from baseball “on paper”) but in a general sense it has unfolded like I thought it would so far – the team is just too inconsistent. Can they find consistency and propel themselves into the playoffs? Sure, there’s still time, but I’m not betting anything substantial on it. 5 games out of division and too many teams ahead in wild card combined with this team’s inconsistency for me to believe strongly everything will break the right way for the Mets.

7/20/2010-1:45pm at 1:45 pm (UTC -4)
That’s why I think adding a front of the rotation guy like Oswalt or Haren WILL help the team to propel themselves into the playoffs and possibly into the NLCS or WS.
Back in April when the Mets were going really good, what was the driving force there? When the Mets had that great run in the month of June, what was the driving force there? It’s consistency in pitching and mostly starting pitching. When Dickey, Taka, Pelf and Niese were all going well, the Mets were a very good team. But we all saw that Taka is vulnerable now. We all are witnessing the league catching up to Pelf and his splitter.
With the way that Johan is pitching it’s not too late to add more pitching help AND propel this team into the top of NL East or WC. Sure Bravos are playing well, but they are not running away with the division either (at least not now). Mets have a chance to be real good this season.

I agree completely with what you say here. I just don’t have any faith/hope/belief that the Mets will acquire either of those guys or anyone else who fits their description.
But there is still a week or so left for them to surprise me.

if the reports are true that the Mets can get Westbrook for next to nothing if they pick up the tab on his expiring 11 mil contract, then you have to make that trade.
I mean thats ridiculous if they pass that up…

I agree if it’s giving up some c-prospect and picking up his salary. But that move alone will not help the Mets to make the playoffs.

7/20/2010-2:37pm at 2:37 pm (UTC -4)
of course not but if the Mets can play like they did in June during August and September then he will certainly help.
