Post Game: Area 51 & Stage 16 Collide

Pelfrey's confidence, like the truth, is out there

Pelfrey's confidence, like the truth, is out there

New York Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (10-5) officially entered Area 51 when he threw 51 pitches and allowed 4 runs in the 1st inning tonight to the Arizona Diamondbacks.  He left the game after 1 1/3 innings, 74 pitches, and 6 runs allowed.  Perhaps I should have left the game at that point too especially considering that coverage of Stage 16 of Le Tour de France starts at 6:30am eastern on Versus with my man Andy Schleck looking for revenge against rival Alberto Contador.

Where were we?  Oh yes, after 2 innings the Mets were down 6-0 and their starting pitcher was out of the game.  The Mets cut it to 6-1 in the 5th inning when Angel Pagan singled to drive in Josh Thole who had walked and moved to 2nd base on a wild pitch by Arizona starter Ian Kennedy (5-7).  In the bottom of the 6th the Diamondbacks got that run back then added 4 more for good measure, all off of reliever Fernando Nieve, and after 6 led by 10 over the Mets.  The lowlight was a 3-run homer into the 2nd deck by Mark Reynolds, his 21st.  The Diamondbacks added 2 runs off of Pedro Feliciano in the 8th and the Mets added 1 in the 9th when Luis Castillo celebrated his return from the disabled list by singling then scored on a double by Jose Reyes for the final score of Arizona 13, New York 2.

well, seeing reyes come back to get a couple of solid hits was a positive.

    That was pretty much it!

Yeah, the boards aren’t going to look pretty tomorrow.

And tell Smooth to stop ruining the dugout. I’m going to start calling him chicken little.

I don’t worry about the boards. Whatever is written is irrelevant. It has no effect upon the ballclub. But Pelfrey is a major problem. The Mets will not contend if Pelfrey continues to pitch as he has over his last few starts. There should be a thread discussing Pelfrey’s problems tomorrow.

They’ll be posts all over on Pelf’s poor performance.

I watched the whole game and it was ugly. W/o good SP we’re going nowhere – I agree 100% with you on that.

I didn’t see the game but I looked at the box score and I have to ask why were Dessens and Feliciano brought into the game? Why use them unnecessarily in a game that is out of reach? Why couldn’t Nieve complete the game? It’s not like the Mets still had a chance to make a game of it.

      Why? Jerry.

Should they have been brought in? Nope.

      Why was Barajas starting? Jerry.

      Who should have? Thole.

What’s wrong with Pelf? No clue.

Does it seem the season is in the balance, breaking on way or the other dependant on Pelfrey? Sure seems that way.
