This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Snakebit in Arizona” Edition 07-20-10

Well the good thing about last nights game was it was over by 10:30 p.m. I woke up about 12 a.m. to use the loo and I checked my phone for the score, and I was glad I went to sleep when I did ! 12-2 !! That’s not a rout that’s an embarrassment !!I don’t know whats wrong with Mike Pelfrey. He has literally turned into Mr. Hyde in his last four starts. I am not a pitcher but he doesn’t seem like he’s pitching hurt, I feel that he has lost his confidence and his mechanics are severly out of whack. Fernando Nieve should just be released. I am beginning to believe that what we saw of him last season was a aberration, and the only thing that he is good for is adding gasoline to a fire. The Mets activated Luis Castillo from the 15-Day Disabled List and demoted Ruben Tejada back to to Buffalo, but Slappy showed why he shouldn’t even be on a major league roster right now, when he misplayed the relay throw from Angel Pagan that could have saved a Diamondback run. But we know Luis will not be released or benched so why even bother complaining about it.

Last time was the first time since May 20, 2009 at Los Angeles, that Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, David Wright and Carlos Beltran all started in the same lineup . I guess that the silver lining last night was the fact that Jose Reyes went 2-4 and showed no ill effects from the strained oblique that had been nagging at him for the past 3 weeks. Also Carlos Beltran went 1-4 , but unfortunately it all went for naught.
Well hopefully R.A Dickey can right the ship tonight.

” The first strike is deadly !!!”

And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Sadly on this date last year one time Met starter, Carl Wiley past away. He was78. Carl pitched for the Mets from ’63-’65 and had compiled a record of 10-18 with a e.r.a of 3.29 in his three season with the Mets.

Mo Vaughn was in Pheonix last night. He was spotted at the Alice Cooperstown resturaunt , eating Randy Johnson’s Big Unit ( hot dog). That’s over 20 inches of tube steak !!!

” Mo loves Randy’s big unit (hotdog!!!) !!!

Beltran hit one hard just foul too, would’ve been a home run. So he seems to be coming around and catching up to speed. I was zoned out at that point, but Nieve did have a good first inning I think, he’s been pretty good as of late actually.

There i sno reason for Jerry to still be managing this team.

    1. rustyjr

Many writers think Jerry has secured his job for the season – but this might get real ugly real fast

    2. metsfan4decades

Nieve’s first inning was fine. After that, it was ugly…

As Rusty pointed out, Pelf has seemed to have lost the mechanics he had in the first part of the season. I don’t think anything is wrong with the arm/shoulder as his velocity is fine. Without Pelf, without good starting pitching, we’re going nowhere. The BP as currently constructed, just can’t get it done for this many multiple innings. Most of them are good for an inning, but that’s about it. Feliciano is starting to concern me too.

      1. ceetar

This is where I get back to thinking Warthen is mostly useless. This was expected of Pelf, to a degree, as the scouting report and wear and tear of the season caught up to him. He’s not been able to adjust at all it seems, and is making it worse. couple that with stiff necks, 9 days of rest, and it’s not a good thing.

I know people think I make too much of this, but rather than Warthen just blabbering to Manuel in the dugout, shouldn’t have have something mechanical or constructive to say to Pelf?

        1. metsfan4decades

Well, I don’t know what Warthen is doing/not doing but whatever it is, it’s not working. Pelf’s outing last night was the worst of the season.

Still time to figure it out but not much time….

  2. metsfan4decades

I think Castillo is the least of our problems. He had 2 hits last night and made a good play to stop a ball from going through. He is what he is and as long as he’s not an automatic out, which everyone else has been in that spot this year, we can live with him the rest of the year.

The pitching is the real concern. We needed a SP coming out of ST and we still need a SP. Omar….you listening?

    1. rustyjr

Omars listening – not sure Jeff is though

    2. njstuckintx

Ceet, as I watched the travesty, err, the game last night, I was forced to wonder if the lineup would best be served with Castillo in the 2 spot vs. the 8. His ability to take pitches and make contact would probably be better suited in that spot, Pagan in the 6, bay in the 7th, barajas in the 8th. (i know, bay in the 7th, but someone has to and honestly, his hitting kind of warrents it)

      1. ceetar

yeah, I’ve thought about it that way. If Bay starts to hit bombs, then you rearrange.

Is 7th too much of an “insult” for Bay though? Also, as bad as Bay is, he runs hard. He’s had a lot of infield singles that virtually anyone else that’s not Reyes or Castillo would’ve been out on. It doesn’t count for much, but at least he’s putting the effort in to try to mimimize the bad. Hope this means he’ll maximize the good when it comes.

        1. njstuckintx

Yeah, I thought of the “insult” part of it as well, but it seems like Bay is pretty level headed and would take advantage of the situation. He knows he isn’t living up to par. He’d be OK I think. They way Pagan’s been hitting you can’t play him in the 7 spot.

  3. rustyjr

    Oops 13 -2 my bad

  4. fongy2

    THAT was ugly last night!…Real,real
ugly. Jerry’s goin’ no where at least
until AFTER the season, the first half
bought him THAT! B/T/W, hasn’t Jerry
ever heard of “Taking one for the team”??..Why wasn’t either Valdez or
Nieve left in there?? Why were Dessens
and especially Feliciano used in a game like THAt??
I’m starting to get the feeling that maybe we should stand pat or try to
sell at the deadline instead of being
buyers. Let Thole Catch, get Tejada back up to play 2B,try to move Barajas out,see if you can get ANYTHING for Castillo…And get rid
of Frenchy, plus see if the market for
    Pagan is inflated.
Lastly, so much for those of you who
wanted to extend Barajas a couple of
    months ago……

    1. ceetar

no one wanted to extend Barajas except one of the beat writers.

it’s too early to give up. especially when no one else won either.

      1. fongy2

Not giving up just not high on moving almost any of the youngsters
        at this point.

        1. njstuckintx

I think the possibility of a Haren, Oswalt or even a Lilly at this point just went from bad to worse with Pettite pulling his crotch. Yanks are going to be in on many, AKA prices just went up. Might be best to bunker down.

    2. metsfan4decades

My biggest complaint with Jerry has always been his BP management.

As far as being sellers….who are we selling?
Half of them wouldn’t net us anyone back and the other half we need to build for next year.

  5. oleosmirf

on the bright side, Reyes, Pagan, Wright, Beltran and Castillo were a combined 8-20 (.400) last night.

  6. saltygary

11 Days until the deadline. If you were the owner (now take your Mets hat off and think clearly), would you take on 10 million in salary right now to upgrade the team?

I wouldn’t do it. Attendance is not where the ownership wants it and they cut prices from last year. They already sport the fifth highest payroll as it is. I would eith do moves that are payroll neutral or something that would help the team in the future. I’m not saying I’m giving up in the season in anyway. I’m saying the team is doing nothing to demonstrate that it is worth the financial risk to take on more dollars.

    1. metsfan4decades

If we’re going to take on a 10MIL in salary, it should be for a pitcher that factors in the rotation for next year. Not just ‘help’ for the rest of this year.

    2. ceetar

      10 million? maybe not.

but I’d have to figure with 5 million that I’d come close to getting my money’s worth if I could keep the team fighting instead of meaningless in September.

assuming that they wouldn’t be anyway.

but to do that, you have to assume that this is just a slump (which is reasonable) but you also have to wonder if Jerry/Dan are the guys to get us there.

    3. oleosmirf

i think it is pretty obvious Oswalt is not happening…

  7. Kingman 26

Rusty, are there any pictures of Mo having that dinner last night??

    —————————————————————–

To paraphrase Ty Webb, “We’re not….we’re not good. We stink.”

    1. rustyjr

No alice cooper was there & he was horrified by what he saw

      1. Kingman 26

I heard even Ozzy threw up….

        1. rustyjr

          As did Bon Scotts corpse

          1. Kingman 26

            LOL! Cannot top that!

Have a great day my friend, and may the memories of last night’s game be erased by a great performance by the Dickster tonight.

  8. darknova306

I sat through the first 7 innings of that atrocity. Wish I had just given up and gone to bed earlier. Ugh.

  9. stickguy

it is not as ugly when you just watch on Gameday.

I still think they are in it. Yes, they have looked brutal the last week, but they have gone from brutal to unstoppable almost overnight before.

Get a Sp, but make sure it is someone that can factor in for next year too. If possible.

They are within 2 games of the WC (or so). And there are not a lot of great teams in the NL (OK< none).

It didn’t really show yesterday, but the offense is at least now potentially potent. if they start to click, good things can happen. and they at least have 3 SPs dialed in and dealing.

So, get another SP. ANd hope that someone (ronnie from the booth most likely, since Warthen I think passed away and the Mets don’t want to spend the money on a replacement) can figure out what the hell is fouled up with the big baby.

    1. ceetar

      heh..very true on Warthen.

It was just disturbing to spend all evening all pumped up for the offense to finally be together, and them to look so woefully unprepared. It’s not even about not hitting, because you can’t just flip a switch, they just looked unready to actually play baseball.

      1. stickguy

More and more things IMO to blame on Jerry. He has a few basic things in his job description, and seems to be lousy or negligent in almost all of them.

I honestly think that another relatively small stretch (a week maybe?) of poor quality losing baseball, with a few more highly debatable (and well roasted) moves, can put him a lot closer to bolivian than many people seem to thin,

While June got him out of imminent danager (and I think he was days away from a long vacation), I don’t think it 100% guaranteed that he was making the end of the year. They hardly owe him any money at this point, and will just use an existing guy to finish the year, so it won’t cost any $.

Especially if they don’t make a notable acquisition by the deadline, Jerry might be the meat they have to throw to the rabid fans!

        1. fongy2

          Jerrys goin’
          no where until
          maybe after the season!
          This teams run
the first 70 or so games with an undermanned team AND his contract insures that.

          1. stickguy

his contract is really cheap though. That won’t mean anything.

I figure he is still going to be here. I would be shocked if they bring him back though, and I already said for next year, it is him or me.

still, if they fumble, bumble and look incompetantly run for the rest of July, he will be a lot closer to the door than you might think.

          2. fongy2

Maybe…Worse is the fact that the earley run insures another couple yrs of Omar.

        2. ceetar

If they approach the homestand at the trainwreck pace they’re on now, there is no way they can sell Jerry to the home crowd. They just cant. They need to make a change at least for changes sake. The Mets can still win 5/6 and salvage the road trip, but it’s looking bleak.

    2. fongy2

Stick, I dont know about where you are but down here
comcast has been running the MLBnetwork free since Friday
      tryin’ to drum up biz.
      Your post made my giggle’cause
I’d have thought watching that mess lastnight on gameday
      would be even worse! :)

      1. stickguy

I am in SJ, but do have comcast. DId not know about the free MLB games, but my daughter was watching a movie during most of the game. I do have MLB.tv on the PC, but don’t always fire it up, especially when other stuff is going on in the room.

For a game like that, I spend more time chatting in the dugout anyway.

        1. fongy2

          Last night was a nightmare,
with the new line-up, I had
          a nice Italian
coffee about 9pm to keep me fueled up and so as to not nod-out in the
          3rd inning….
And next think ya know, I’m wide awake at
          11pm, having long sice moved
          on watching Giants-Dodgers
          and unable to
          fall to sleep.
          Thanks alot Mike Pelfrey!!

  10. fongy2

I dont know if anyone else caught that special on the MLBnetwork
“The Club” following The Whitesox from January through the first couple months of the season.
Watching that all I kept thinking was what a clown-show Omar and Jerry
are compared to the other GM/Mgr combos which are successful in the
    league.

    1. stickguy

wait, you are using the white sox as a model for well run and successful?

      1. fongy2

        They’re NOT???

        1. njstuckintx

Their Gangster is R rated. Ours is PG. And can’t manage a bull pen. And likes to bunt. Alot.

          1. fongy2

            Tru Dat
            Dawg!
