Post Game: Technically Difficult Loss

"Oops" pretty much covers it.

"Oops" pretty much covers it.

The 1st few innings of the New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks game tonight were not available to SNY viewers due to technical difficulties.  Audio was restored fairly early on but video did not return until moments before Justin Upton hit a solo home run to deep right-center off of Mets starter R.A. Dickey (6-4) to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  The next inning Arizona scored twice more after 2 outs.  Recovering center fielder Carlos Beltran took the Ho Chi Minh Trail to a fly ball that would up an RBI triple for Gerardo Parra plating Chris Snyder who had walked.  Arizona starting pitcher Barry Enright (2-2) then singled to drive in Parra and after 4 innings it was 3-0 Diamondbacks.  Mets catcher Josh Thole ensured his continued presence in the major leagues with his 1st major league home run, a solo shot to right, in the 8th that made it 3-1.  Arizona’s Juan Gutierrez came on in the 9th for the save and promptly gave up a solo home run to Angel Pagan leading off but he retired the next 3 batters including the last 2 on strikeouts to preserve the Diamondbacks win.  The Mets have lost the 1st 2 games of a series to the team with the 2nd worst record in the NL, are now 1-5 since the All-Star Game, and the 1 win you may recall was in large part a gift from umpire Phil Cuzzi.  Arizona 3, New York 2.  After the game the Mets sent Justin Turner to AAA Buffalo to make room on the active roster for P Oliver Perez.

      From MLBTR:

“Meanwhile, Price reports (via Twitter) that talks regarding Oswalt are ongoing between the Phillies and Astros.”

Amazing how a team in a smaller market with there payroll maxed out for next year, and larger than ours, still can and will do this type of deal. This my friends is what it takes to win and with old freddy boy we just will never have that.

First things first bieng at this game and sitting just to the left of beltran in center field, this guy has no business bieng in center field.I love carlos and forgave him for the 06. Strike out but this guy is limping out there in regaurds to the parra fly ball this ball was as flat as a fly ball could be and didn’t rise at all and carlos couldn’t get to it he was limping out to his position all night again I love him but he needs to be in right field for now.On another note how many pitchers are sy young to this met team they need a day off real bad.

I think we all knew tran would not be 100%. As long as Tran hits better than frenchy I think we can live with Tran in CF.

Bobby O’s take on this is if anyone is expecting Beltran to come out of the gate playing his flawless style of defense, they’re expecting too much.

Said it’s a process for any player that’s been on the DL that long. He seems to feel we’ll be seeing the old Beltran as soon as he gets some playing time at the major league level under him.

      1. stickguy

unless of course his knee can’t stand up to the pounding.

man, too bad the mets aren’t in the AL (just not the east of course!) he could really stand to be a DH.

    3. gategem

They had three games off at the ASB and a lot of good that did them.

When the Mets return home I hope Jeff Wilpon enjoys the fans disguised as empty seats at CF.

I see you got to stare out ‘Technical Difficulties. Please stand by’ for 3 innings as well, Grave. LOL.

This is getting old – fast.

If you can find it, Bobby O was pretty blunt on the post game show tonight. In summation, Mets playing with no grit, no determination, no game plan.

Oh…Turner down, Ollie activated, Thole stays.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Mets need to just win right 4d? Winning cures all.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Simple recipe for success.

        Gee…why didn’t I think of that?

        1. gategem

Neither did I, so that explains why we are not GMs of a major league franchise. LOL

      2. gategem

        Easier said then done.

I would just like to see some offence while I’m on this trip there only 5 games left for me to see up front and personel times running out as it is for the mets .

    1. metsfan4decades

wow steveo….so far this has not been fun for you, has it?

  5. stickguy

If beltran isn’t able to play CF, while not ideal (and potentially messy) there is the option to move to RF.

But, that might be a touch less running, but will still be a lot of pounding. And if he can’t stand up to it, they are going to be in a world of hurt.

If nothing else though, if beltran busts, can they move on and find someone besides Frenchy to play?

    1. steveo

I’m starting to think Omars giving up early this year and finding anyone of an upgrade to this team is a pipe dream. And of course the way this teams playing isn’t helping any trade decisions

  6. steveo

I just caant understand how a team can be such good and then so bad it doesn’t make any sense.

    1. gategem

That’s to be expected from mediocre teams. They endure devastating cold streaks followed by periods where they play outstanding baseball only to once again go into a funk. It’s the nature of the beast.

I don’t think very highly of this Mets team but having said that I did think they could and would handle AZ with little problem. I consider AZ the NL equivalent of CLE & BAL and was looking forward to a road series win here. I know they don’t play the games on paper but I’m very disappointed with the team’s showing in this series so far.

I thought the team might do well enough coming out of the ASG to show they deserved reinforcements via trade to help them be better prepared to handle a stretch run at a post season berth. Now I’m thinking more about them making transactions along the lines of cutting Barajas to allow Thole more playing time.

    1. steveo

      I agree with that 100%

    David Lennon via twitter:

Cora not happy with clubhouse laughter after another #Mets loss. Yells out, “A little respect please. They stuck it up our —!”

    1. steveo

This team needs a fight. Maybe even with each other.

    2. gategem

Do you think that Jerry’s to0 easy on this team and they need a Wally Backman type manager?

      1. steveo

I think we all asked for that in previous years

      2. GravediggerHebner

It’s certainly possible, dare I say even probable, that Jerry is too easy on this team. Assuming that then it does seem logical that any replacement be more of a hardass.

I don’t know much about Wally Backman except how he is as a minor league manager and I just don’t know enough to know if what works there also works in the majors and if not is he capable of adjusting.

About the only thing I do know is earlier tonight some regular Joe person (it wasn’t Ceetar) tweeted that the Mets needed to fire Manuel and replace him with Backman and Toby Hyde (of Mets Minor League Blog) responded “Backman is not the answer.” I found that interesting coming from him. What it means I guess we’d have to ask him to elaborate.

    3. stickguy

any chance they can release jerry and promote cora?

  9. stickguy

I still can’t see how the Phils get oswalt without losing brown (there only legit upper level prospect), since supposedly the Astros are asking for the moon?

Maybe the phils end up putting the package of deals together, and oswalt screws them by saying no!

  10. GravediggerHebner

Wow I don’t know the exact circumstances but apparently in the 9th inning of a game leading 5-4 acting Dodger manager Don Mattingly made 2 trips to the mound (2nd one accidentally) and had to remove Broxton with the bases loaded. Sherrill was forced to come in having thrown only 3 warm up pitches and promptly gave up 2-run double to give Giants 6-5 lead and runners on 2nd & 3rd.

From what I can tell it was Mattingly not understanding he couldn’t go out twice in 1 inning, I’ll have to read more about how it went down in the morning.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Giants announcers just described it as Mattingly taking “one step off the mound, turning around & going back” and Bochy protested to the umps saying it was “two trips” and the umps agreed with Bochy, Broxton had to come out. Wow.

  11. steveo

Again at least they are. Willing to make a deal the mets we get ollie

  12. gategem

Utilizing the latest technology the cause of the technical difficulties during the 1st few innings of the game was found to be the following:

      LOL…good one, gategem….

  13. gategem

I read this over at Amazin’ Avenue. Apparently Barajas’ line since the end of May is .165/.221/.227/.448. The .448 number is his OPS. Yet Jerry has gotten Barajas into 75% of the team’s games since June 26th.
