We Now Give You Beer Money Already In Progress…

Last night I spent my evening watching the game while chatting with many fellow TRDMB members
in the Dugout and found it entertaining that those that were watching the game on SNY had no video and as
one member pointed out a “dvdrip with cam audio”.

With every out made the frustration of not having video grew so much so that trying to make light of the situation
I would every once in a while say “We Now Give You Beer Money Already In Progress…” that got a chuckle
from those in the room.

It was probably the highlight of the evening as it kept the focus off what was happening on the field which was
the Mets offense once again failing to show up wasting another good start from a Mets starter.

The Mets are now 49-45 6.5 games behind the Division leading Braves. Which seem to just refuse to lose and
have the 3rd best record in MLB at 55-38. Those pesky Braves that back on May 17th were 18-20 and in
last place 6.5 games behind the Division leading Phillies. Since that day the Braves have gone on a
37-18 tear playing .673 ball.

The farthest behind the Mets ever was this season was 7 games behind way back on May 21st and here they are now
6.5 games back. Can the Mets play .673 ball the rest of the way and turn it around like the Braves did? Probably not
that would mean they would have to go about 46-22 the rest of the way .676 ball. That would put them at 95-67 for the season.

Right now I am crossing my fingers for the Mets to go 41-27 .602 ball.

Whatever happens though other than watching fellow author Ceetar on an upcoming episode of Beer Money I don’t think the “We Now Give You Beer Money Already In Progress…” line won’t go far in masking what is happening on the field.

my question to fellow met fans is if the mets don’t bring in a SP and roll with Ollie/Takahashi/Misch/Gee/Ramon Ortiz/Nieve/Valdes in that spot do you consider that to be a failure by the organization.

(and no a minor league deal for another team’s recently DFAd player doesn’t count)

Depends. Depends on what you had to give, who was out there…

I know you disagree but we really have no idea.

In other news the Astros have claimed two of our castoffs. Anderson Hernandez and Nelson Figgy.

Could be that a guy like Kepp or Myers/Oswalt is on the move.

      1. njstuckintx

Prob. not. They have absolutely nothing in the high minor leagues, so they need the depth more than any thing else.

        1. Mr North Jersey

TX what are you hearing about Astros claiming and adding Anderson Hernandez and P Nelson Figueroa to the active roster and designating AAA Pitcher Trinidad for assigment?

I am reading they are adding both to the roster one before and the other after today’s game.

Specualtion in some threads is they may be getting ready to move keppinger.

          1. stickguy

I was always a keppinger fan. Felt bad for him that one year when he finally had the 2B job in NY open up for him, then fot taken out on a play and injured the day before he was supposed to come up to start.

Does he have anything left at this point? I really have no idea.

          2. njstuckintx

He’s had a pretty productive year thus far.

          3. trs86

That is what I have read too. Both to be activated so not really depth.

          4. njstuckintx

Haven’t heard much. i wouldn’t be surprised either way if he was or wasn’t move. He’s been their most productive offensive guy.

If Hernandez can play short, that’s where they’ll put him. they basically have AA and AAA guys manning that position at the moment. As for figgy, their SP is falling apart, so he could slot in as a body just for the rest of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went after Nate Robertson. Injury and suckitude have killed them. Sound familiar?

          5. trs86

Hey this is a Mets blog not a Phillies blog.

          6. njstuckintx

If it was a phillies blog, i’d have mentioned Oswalt. :P

          7. trs86

I just figured your comment on injury and suckitude would have to be about them.

          8. njstuckintx

Oh, i thought it was the figgy comment. Either way, yes, a pox and suckitude on the phils.

          9. Mr North Jersey

LoL, yes it sounds very familiar. ;-)

            Thanks for the info Tx.

    2. stickguy

well, not sure I woul duse the term failure, since I don’t really know how to define it in this context.

personally, I would say it was either a curious choice, or a disappointment. But mostly, I would classify it as an inidcation that they are looking at 2011 as a better option.

    3. ceetar

Failure or success will be determined on 10/4.

    4. DNDJohan aka kistics

I don’t care if they bring in another SP or RP or whomever… Just get someone to help the team reach playoffs. But I strongly believe that in order for this team to reach the playoffs, you need a solid SP and a RP.

  2. ceetar

Yes, yes! come watch me make a fool out of myself on beer money by failing on the third question!

now if they’d get around to airing these things..

    1. Mr North Jersey

:-D You failed the 3rd question?

It’s ok I am sure it had to be a hard question like how many times have the Mets won a World Series. :-D

      1. oleosmirf

or how many times they made the playoffs?

  3. stickguy

If it makes anyone feel better (maybe in the “misery loves company” catagory), the headline today in the Philly paper sports section is “Phillies slowly slip slidin’ away”.

Hopefully that continues. I don’t think I could deal with them making another rise from the dead run this year.

  4. metsfan4decades

I can’t answer this question b/c I have no idea who Omar has been talking to, what deals were offered, what deals might have been turned down. Just too many factors.

I’ve kept up with all rumors concerning Mets and trades and it didn’t appear to me as if so far, they were seriously in on anyone that’s available. 31 July is coming up quickly so who knows if that will change or not. I’d still like to see a SP added, one that would be good for a couple of years going forward, not just the rest of this season.

    1. trs86

      Yeah, what you said.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Hi 4D this may sound dumb so forgive me but what question is it you say you can’t answer? :-)

      1. trs86

Ahh was that it? Thanks I kept reading my post trying to see if I wrote something that would solicit that type of reply.

4D shame on you the word of the day for you is “Nesting”. ;-D

        2. metsfan4decades

Yeah, sorry….was responding back to Oleo’s question – first comment on this post. My bad….

          1. Mr North Jersey

            :-D

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

Can’t trust these media outlets. They are good at creating false rumors…

  5. dirtysanchez

Adam’s “source” is reporting that the Mets and Astros have not had many convos about either oswalt or myers….

Guys, There is no smoke…there is no fire. I think we will all watch the trade deadline come and go with no moves. Omar would have wasted another opportunity for a playoff run.

    1. rustyjr

The Mets have had very little conversation with the Astros, a surprised National League source told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

      1. njstuckintx

Did Rubin sneak up on the NL Source to ask him that? A “surprised” source?

    2. Mr North Jersey

Dirty I may be wrong but I think the Mets were never serious on Oswalt based on earlier reports so that Rubin reports the Mets and Astros having very little talk is not a surprise.

What the Mets do if anything at all will be curios to see indeed. I am at a point where I don’t know if I really want them to go after a player giving up prospects especially if said player is one of the Westbrook variety. I want to see them fight to win but at the same time I don’t want them to make a half hearted effort at getting better. I may be right or wrong but I just don’t see a Westbrook making that much of a difference.

I think if the Mets were serious about putting the best 25 men on their roster to try and make the post season then carrying Ollie and 3 catchers would not be happening. Mets are in my opinion playing with a 23 man roster.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Well half hearted effort to bring in guys like Westbrook should not cost any impact prospects. Maybe some no name prospect we’ve never heard of with some upside potential, but Salary relief should definitely count towards something. So, if they give up Joe Nobody with some upside potential, I don’t mind trading for Westbrook.

BUT I’d rather give up one of the top prospect and two b-level prospects AND take on Oswalt’s contract. I think that move will definitely help the team to win this season, next and maybe one after that.

        1. stickguy

It likely would, assuming of course he stayed healthy. Ditto for Haren.

I keep harping on wanting them to make a “now and later” move. They need 1 solid SP acquired in the off season anyway, so if they can get that guy now, it gives them the best chance of hitting the PS this year, while being primed for a good run next year too.

A craptastic rental I guess is better than nothing (with taka going back to the pen), but it really does not help at all for next year, and is not likely to be enough this year either.

          1. oleosmirf

i have a feeling Bronson Arroyo will be signed in the offseason, should he leave the Reds…

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

            +1
