For all of us who begged and begged for the Mets to stop playing nice nice and go overslot to get talent, your pleas have been heard. Please read this article from Mike Silva’s blog.
About friggin time. I dont know too much about the guy who they signed but I and im sure alot of Met fans hope this is a sign of things to come. They have played to the commish’s tune for too long and are realizing the consequences. Mets are among the cheapest teams when it comes to the draft and as MLB Tonight put it a few weeks ago when discussing the Mets farm system “It has handcuffed them from producing stars”. I hope the Mets realize the real benefits from doing well in a draft soon and we can start pumping out prospects like an Ike Davis or David Wright. It has never been more important than what we see taking place now, as due to the lack of depth regarding talent in the farm im sure has played a hand in most of the hesitation on the part of Omar to acquire a much needed piece for this team which has a real shot at the post season. Keep this thing going Mets, being on the commissioners “good side” doesnt bring people to the stadium and doesnt win championships…talent does.

I thought I read somewhere yesterday that this singing was on hold by MLB to give them ‘time to review’, or some such crap.
If it wasn’t the signing of Demayo, then it was about another signing where they were going overslot.

Well, it’s a step in the right direction. Now hopefully this guy pans out.

Exactly!!!…I never understood this.
Just draft the guy you want from whos best and available.
All this “playin’by the rules”
junk ain’t helpin’ us!
I see the yankees do whatever
they want and don’t give back the rings!

not sure MLB is actually upset, nor am i so sure that the Mets have “desperately” needed to do this this way. Sometimes the guys you want are willing to sign for the slot.

I have no problem with the mets if they can sign the guy they want in a frugal manner, but i loathe the fact certain players aren’t drafted because they aren’t going to sign unless they get an amount that is above what they are “supposed” to sign for. That’s just silly. If the Mets wanted this guy because he’s good and to them is worth 23rd, or 22nd or 21st or 10th or whatever round money to them, let them do it.

but if the guy they want isnt willing to sign at slot price and he is worth it, dont see why a team as rich as ours should let a few dollars stand in the way of farm improvement. Of course I say this with the understanding that a 24th round pick isnt asking for 5mil to sign either.

Right, and that’s what they did here.
But i’m not sure the “OMG THE METS DON”T GO OVER SLOT!” from the last couple of years necessarily meant they were being cheap.

screw selig. MLB does not make a peep when other teams do it (especially the yankees).
Not sure what they are “reveiwing” sinc ethere is nothing they can do (y the rules) if the mets want to pay overslot.
I fugure it is just time for them to threaten to pull the 2013 ASG if they don’t behave, but at this point, I smell a lawsuit if they go back and take the offer off the table!

Is there an official transaction of this anywhere? I’ve read conflicting reports for weeks as to whether Goeddel has actually signed with the Mets or not. Seems to change almost daily.
Assuming that it is finally true good for the Mets. Identify the talent you want and do what it takes to get it. I found it very disappointing last season that 2 of their top 10 draft picks went unsigned. Glad to see what may be a change in philosophy.
