Post Game: Bay of Fundies

Fundamentally Canadian

Fundamentally Canadian

The New York Mets exhibited superb defense, especially their outfielders, specifically Jason Bay who hit a gate in the Dodger Stadium left field wall with his face so hard that it bent his neck backward then sent him abruptly to the ground.  He made the catch.  Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran also flashed the leather making some nice running and/or sliding catches throughout the game, Beltran’s sliding grab coming in on a ball noteworthy considering his recent long disabled list stint and knee brace, helping Johan Santana (8-5) earn the win.  Santana went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits.  Bay woke up at the plate as did the Mets offense which scored 6 runs it’s most since July 5th.  Bay hit a bases loaded double in the 8th inning driving in 3 runs and turning a tenuous 3-1 Mets lead into a 6-1 advantage.  Bobby Parnell and Francisco Rodriguez each threw a scoreless inning to finish up.  The Mets first run was perhaps their most interesting.  With 1 out in the 1st inning David Wright was at the plate with Jose Reyes on 3rd and Luis Castillo on 1st.  Castillo attempted to steal 2nd as Wright struck out for the 2nd out of the inning.  LA catcher Russell Martin‘s throw to 2nd was in time and Castillo would have been out but 2B Ronnie Belliard dropped the ball making Castillo safe as Reyes stole home.  Ike Davis hit a solo homer, his 14th, in the 2nd inning and Wright drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the 8th prior to Bay’s bases-clearing hit.  Mets manager Jerry Manuel was ejected from the game for arguing a bad out call on Castillo at first base that ended the top of the 2nd inning.  New York 6, Los Angeles 1.

Reporter to Manuel: Did the umpire say why he threw you out?

Manuel: He said I was yelling.

    Reporter: Were you yelling?

    Manuel: I guess I was.

I know Jerry was hot, for sure, but that ump had a short fuse himself. Jerry must have used a magic word or two…

Right when bay hit that double I felt a chill go through me and then I realized it was beer being spilt on me by a dodger fan.Ill take it if thats what it takes.

Johan won a game in which he gave up only one run. He’s had six others in which he gave up one run or less and didn’t win.

His season would sure seem great if he was 12-5 or 13-5 or 14-5.

Finally the loss of sleep this week paid off.

Johan probably starting to think he’d have to pitch a no hitter to get a win. Good to see him start off the second half in his usual fashion.

Wasn’t explosive offense but finally got the big hit when it counted – by Bay of all people.

I haven’t looked at the numbers (I’m going to go shop for a bridesmaid dress and eat BBQ at Dinosaur BBQ instead) but Santana making a case for Pitcher of the Month.

They put up his stats during the game last night. It was startling just how well Johan has pitched and has very little to show for it.

Big day coming up soon for you, huh? If I’m not mistaken it’s in Oct? Here’s hoping you’ll be sneaking out to the bar at the reception to watch a Mets post season game that day – hahaha.

Hoping that the Mets game is the third game 3 on that Sunday, and 8pm, post-reception.

It may come down to Santana vs Wainwright.

I don’t think we see Wainwright to help our own cause do we?

          1. Mr North Jersey

I don’t quite understand what your referring to but to clarify I was talking about it coming down to Santana vs Wainwright for pitcher of the month.

          2. Mr North Jersey

            In the NL of course.

          3. ceetar

we face the CARDS Next week. do we face wainny? dont think so

  7. CaseStreet

Nice game, especially the defense from bay and pagan.
Gotta say, I really like last nights lineup.
And anyone that questioned who the mets ace is, hopefully won’t question Santana again.

  8. ceetar

btw, for whatever idiots roll out the 1-6 with Beltran stat, remember, the Mets are 1-7 with Manuel managing since the break.

    1. metsfan4decades

I know he put the lineup togeter but….not really Manuel managing last night since he got himself tossed early on. We got the cardboard cutout of Jauss in the dugout doing the honors.

      1. stickguy

MF, you know that Jerry is still in the tunnel or the clubhouse making the calls. As evidenced by F Rod coming in.

Man, I hate when they bring him in for now save situations. Just 1 game closer to the crappy option vesting.
