honestly, I don’t know what scares me more.

The Mets sitting back and doing nothing.

Or Omar jumping into action, and making some kind of big splash.

Actually, that is a no brainer. The 2nd option (right now) scares me much more.

But, as long as the action is canning Hojo (maybe Jerry too, but probably not) and maybe a trade like that rumored one with KC, then I am fine. At this point, hang onto the prospects, and sort out the mess in the off seaosn.

    1. metsfan4decades

Thing is….other than getting a SP and maybe a piece for the BP, it’s not that much of a mess right now. Who wouldn’t normally feel confident with Wright/Reyes/Pagan/Bay/Beltran/Davis in your lineup?

Catillo is far from the problem this year and could probably be a place holder next year.

For the most part they’re all under performing right now – outside the pitching staff if have been just a smidge less then perfect since the ASB.

To me, that translates to the coaching staff has to go.
Here’s hoping that doesn’t translate to the FO on breaking up the core.

      1. njstuckintx

What are their needs? – Starting pitching and bull pen help
What is out there in the market? – some BP arms, very little SP.

I really hope a reactionary Omar realizes that the market conditions are not ideal to improve the ball players and for the sake of appeasing the fans and to put a little fear of God into the players axes some coaches.

    2. gategem

I totally concur with your philosophy. Unfortunately we presently have a situation analogous to a sinking ship with Jerry the Captain, Omar the Operating Manager, Jeff Wilpon the President and Fred Wilpon the Chairman of the Board. The ship is doomed.

BTW To all those that point to the players being happy and content playing for Jerry well considering how most of them (with exception of the SPs) are performing perhaps they need to be pissed off. Unfortunately the Mets are not owned by Carnation and the players are not contented cows (supposedly give better milk). LOL

      1. metsfan4decades

Saw a tweet a few minutes ago where Wright and Reyes are defending HoJo.

Those of us that have been in the workforce a number of years have seen this all too many times. It’s hard to fire a good guy, a friend or even a mediocre ‘team’ member. Sometimes, you have to do the hard, especially if you’re striving to improve the status quo b/c the status quo just isn’t working anymore.

      2. ceetar

Your right, Dickey looked real happy and content playing for Jerry.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Dickey communicated very clearly in the post game that he understood why Jerry would not believe his (Dickey’s) self-assessment.

I wish more ballplayers were like Dickey, if they were today’s incident between Dickey & Jerry would never have ended with Dickey’s removal. But too many players are too full of sh!t (see: Maine, John as a recent example) and Jerry, not having enough experience with Dickey to know otherwise, felt that Dickey was probably full of sh!t just like everybody else and so pulled him.

Learning experience for Jerry with Dickey today. But one that ultimately won’t matter because barring a post season berth Jerry won’t be around next season anyway and Dickey will be here in 2011 whether the 2010 Mets see the playoffs or not. Hopefully whoever the next manager is noted today’s happenings thus sparing all parties involved a replay of today if Dickey gets knicked in-game next year.

          1. Mr North Jersey

OK so who can recall the last time Grave said sh!t twice in a comment?

Next thing will be 4D saying, “Can you believe this dumb son of a b!tch?”

          2. GravediggerHebner

I had originally typed “expletive” but figured it was after 9:00pm so…

          3. Mr North Jersey

            :-) hahahahha

          4. metsfan4decades

            hahaha – I like it.

From now on, they’re all no good SOBs until proven otherwise..

          5. metsfan4decades

Dickey’s post game interview was the only highlight from the game. More and more I’ve noticed they give Dickey plenty of air time, sometimes more than many, if for no other reason than everyone loves listening to him talk.

I can listen to Dickey speak all day. How often do you hear a ball player respond to any question from the media with ‘It’s of no consequence’?

Dickey is professional, honest, intellectual, intelligent and just plain fun to listen to.

          6. oleosmirf

he is quickly becoming my favorite Met…

          7. stickguy

ditto. I hope he is OK now, and that they are able to bring him back for next year (I honestly have no idea if he can be tendered or offered arb for next year, but i do want him back).

          8. oleosmirf

im afraid that Ollie’s contract forces them to keep him here and they go out and sign a better known guy to replace Dickey

          9. stickguy

no chance. Ollie will not be dictating anything. I don’t even think he will be here, but even if he makes ST, he won’t be guaranteed anything.

Besides, wouldn’t having Ollie and his contract make it more likely they kept DIckeyinstead of someone more expensive?

  2. gategem

To those of you still possessing your sense of humor you may want to read Eric Simons post at amazin’ avenue.

    1. metsfan4decades

And this comment on their latest blog concerning the potential trade with the Royals:

‘This trade would just be two organizations flaunting their ignorance to the rest of the baseball world, taking their three biggest failures each and putting them on a pedestal.’

‘I’m just worried they might try to swap urinal cakes too, but hit a snag when Kauffman’s are discovered to come from a cheaper distributer.’

  3. oleosmirf

i dont want to acquire Gil Meche in any trade with Royals. That means he is our SP acquisition this offseason.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I don’t understand why it means that. The rumored deal has Ollie going and Meche coming. Both have 2 year, $24 million contracts so if Meche coming here means the team wouldn’t be getting an off season pitcher doesn’t Ollie being here mean that the team won’t be getting an off season pitcher too?

      1. oleosmirf

well they could theoretically trade him to another team or release him. they arent gonna trade for Meche and just release him

        1. GravediggerHebner

I agree with you that ideally the Mets should have neither guy.

  4. Mr North Jersey

Was crunching some numbers about road trip and all I can say is wow.

Longest consecutive scoreless innings during road trip: 3
24 consecutive innings without scoring a run
17 consecutive innings without scoring a run
16 consecutive innings without scoring a run

    4 Times have been shutout

In 109 innings scored 2 or more runs in an inning only twice.
    2 runs 7th inning July 17th http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN201007170.shtml
    4 runs 8th inning July 23rd http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN201007230.shtml

Held lead for only 14 of the 109 innings during road trip

    rbi leader during road trip
    Davis – 4 rbi’s
    Bay/Pagan – tied with 3 rbi’s
    Barajas/Reyes/Wright tied with 2 rbi’s

    1. GravediggerHebner

Interesting that Beltran’s name doesn’t even show up on your RBI list considering he’s been batting 4th & 5th.

Perhaps the smartest thing I heard on the radio tonight was the suggestion that Beltran should not only be being eased back into the lineup with occasional days off but also with a lower position in the lineup when he does play such as 6th or 7th. That combined with more Pagan in RF and Thole at C is about the best think I can think of to get the lineup more productive barring an unlikely trade.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Agreed in retrospect batting Beltran 4th or 5th may not have been the way to go especially since he is hitting .188 as he entered today’s game and is 1 for 6 with risp and 1 rbi.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Actually disregard the rbi’s i am finding discrepancies with what i saw on B.R.

  5. CaseStreet

hmm, which former Expo is Omar bringing in?

    1. rustyjr

      Bartolo colon

      1. Kingman 26

Whoa! Does this mean that right now we have Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore in Buffalo?!?!

  6. GravediggerHebner

If the Mets are intent on replacing the hitting coach I wonder what Steve Henderson is up to these days?

    1. Kingman 26

Or how much it might take to lure Hernandez into working 6-7 days a week for a while…

      1. GravediggerHebner

That would be so wonderful but I just think he likes time off too much to take on anything other than a part-time roving instructor type of role. Damn it would be good though. The hitting philosophies that he shares on the broadcast sure seem to make a lot of sense.

I brought up Hendu because I recalled his being fired from the Rays’ hitting coach position prior to this year. He was their coach during their phoenix-like rise from obscurity to contender. He meets the “ex-Met” qualifier…

        1. Kingman 26

Agreed across the board, and I sure loved Hendu when I was about 11 and 12. I am still a little ticked that Dawson beat him by one vote for 1977 Rookie of the Year!

I also think, the more I watch and listen, that Ojeda might make a great pitching coach.

      2. CaseStreet

i don’t think he’d be a good coach, he’s too arrogant and impatient. i’m sure he has tons to teach, but he wouldn’t be a good teacher if you know what I mean

  7. Kingman 26

I have to say that for once I really am not sure what to say.

Great pitching and zero offense. Allowed more than 4 runs twice in 15 games, and go 4-11. How do you even do that?

    2007, the starters.

    2008, the bullpen.

    2009, the injuries.

    2010, the offense.

This really is approaching the stage where apathy might set in.

Incredible pitching, which should thrill us all, but how the hell can we be SO anemic offensively for so long? How can a team with so much offensive talent on paper do so little for so long?

To add to Mr. N’s fine work above, how about 32 runs in 15 games! 1/10 of a season with 32 TOTAL runs, and more than 4 runs ONCE in 15 games!

Zero hits in like 7 IP twice against bullpens recently!

I have to say that I just do not even know where to begin.

STL, AZ, @ATL, @PHI, COL, PHI the next 18.

And the Angels get Haren and we are rumored to be talking to KC about Meche.

    What happens next?

    1. CaseStreet

didn’t even see that about Haren. Hey, at least the Yanks get screwed again, plus it keeps him away from Stl and the Phils

      1. Kingman 26

You do have an admirable knack for finding silver linings, don’t you?

        :-)

    2. metsfan4decades

Don’t ask that question, my friend. We should all be afraid of the answer….

In all my 40 years plus of following this team, I’ve never seen anything quite like what’s going on this year on the field and what’s been going on both on and off the field in the past few years.

      1. Kingman 26

I know MF4D—after last year (following the Septs of 2007 and 2008) what are we supposed to think?

A FOURTH straight year of this?

I am afraid of the answer…very afraid.

In my 37+ years of Metfandom, I also cannot say I have seen anything like this. I mean, the late 70s and early 80s we had no talent. In the early-to-mid 90s we had overrated bad characters. What do we say about 2007–2010 should this year continue as the last month has suggested it will?

    3. oleosmirf

so that means Omar will address the lineup but ignore SP again…great…

      1. Kingman 26

Oleo, I think that if we sink below FLA in the next 2 weeks Jerry is gone, and if we finish 4th this year, Omar is gone.

And off topic, but I have been thinking about your NBA point the other day. That really was thought-provoking, especially when I really looked at it and realized the 2004 Pistons are the only team since the end of the 70s to win a title without at least one super-elite player. The 2003 Nets were SO close….sigh….that lead in SA in game 6….

        1. fongy2

          I think JKidd

was pretty close to an elite player
          at that time.

          1. Kingman 26

            Good call!!

We could have joined that damned list!!

KMart shot like 3-for-25 and we blew a double-digit lead with about 9 minutes left in game 6.

I am in San Antonio on biz and can see their damn arena from my hotel room!!

That MIGHT have caused some memories to flow back.

        2. fongy2

          It pretty funny
I had that same conversation w/my nephew in
          the days following the
          LeBron signing.
          I brought up the 77Supersonics
and my nephew pointed out that Piston
team. Billups is pretty close however
          to an elite player….
          But,good point.

          1. fongy2

            Ofcourse,one could also
            argue Sikma,Dennis Johnson
            &Gus Williams were all
            elite players
            at that time.

          2. Kingman 26

Yeah, but the following year it was Magic and Kareem, then Bird, then Dr. J.

Those Sonics were really good, but those guys were not on the level of what came next…

          3. fongy2

Agreed Buddy, but remember, during those Washing/Seattle series Bird&Magic weren’t in the league yet.

          4. Kingman 26

So true, and those two, one could say, began the run of the super-elite winning every year.

          5. Kingman 26

Yeah, but when you look at basketball reference, it really hits you—back to 1980—EVERY title: Bird, Dr J, or Magic/Kareem, then Isiah, then MJ, then Olajuwon, then MJ, and Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Wade, Garnett since MJ.

EVERY one but those 2004 Pistons!!

          6. fongy2

No doubt! It is obviously a team game BUT you need a Super-Duper Star to build around.
The problem many teams have had over the past 20+yrs is I.Ding a real Superstar.
Guys like A.I. ,McGrady, Carter etc weren’t good enough or to understand that they could be starts BUT still defer to others including Coaches in order to Win.
Those three, just to name a few were..to me, guys who belonged in the 70s NBA, where they could go for 30+ a night but winning,if it meant getting 20 some nights wasn’t as important.

          7. Kingman 26

Agreed! Especially so as a Net fan who was SOOOOO excited when we got Vince!

            Ugh.

At least the Dolphins should be competitive….

  8. fongy2

Just to throw my two cents in……
    I’d make the 3for3 trade w/KC in
a heartbeat!…It rids us of Ollie,
and Castillo who is just a bad-luck
charm and Frenchy whos never gonna
be much more than he has been this
year. Also, the problem isn’t HoJo,
it’s Jerry. Giving up outs, making
bone-headed moves like getting KRod up six times, then using Ollie in
    a must-win situation etc, etc…
The more I see of his Managing, the more I feel bad for Willie……
    Having Jerry as your Bench-Coach????
Depending on HIS brain to help the
    Mgr make in-game decisions???
The only move to make for THIS and next season is to reach out to Bobby
    V. before he ends up getting the
    Cub job!….Any in-organization move
like Melvin or Collins is pretty much a temp/side move and likely not
for the long-term anyway. So, whats
    the point of that???

    1. Kingman 26

To me, it must be Bobby V, Wally, Tim Teufel, or Buck Showalter.

      1. fongy2

        I agree with Bobby V.,
Showalter might actually be a perfect
        fit though. Hardcore,
        old school General.
        Teufel I’d understand
        as we con’t to get younger…BUT I don’t see Wally at all….
Too much of a loose cannon AND unlike loose cannon Billy Martin, no past success as an MLB Mgr….

        1. Kingman 26

I actually think Showalter might be THE best fit.

An outsider, someone totally new, someone who knows NY and has had success, a serious taskmaster for a team which, hate to admit it as much as I do, might really be a bit on the soft side.

          1. fongy2

            Agreed
            in full!!

          2. fongy2

I think Buck might be more than a little leary though if he had to take orders from Omar…
            Wouldn’t you??

          3. Kingman 26

Ha! Yeah, but I think if this continues, your Teflon Don is going to shed the teflon for velcro and be gone.

          4. fongy2

I’m not so sure…I think the Wilpons are sweet on him and that goes a long way….THAT..Plus the money hes owed.
I still think hes got another Mgr in him, hence the reason I could see HoJo gettin’ the boot and Omar bringing in a new Mgr in the winter.

  9. fongy2

    Thats some friggin combo Brock…
A Met fan, Net fan….And Dolphin
    fan???…

    1. Kingman 26

Yeah, Case once said I must really hate myself!

My Dad is 100% responsible for the Mets/Nets, but I was on my own for the NFL and in the early 70s picked the Fish, who, at the time, seemed to be a great choice! Seriously, no Super Bowl wins since 74 and last appearance in 85, but still a mostly very good franchise with loads of playoff trips. And maybe a year away, but building something in a VERY tough division. Damn those Jets.

      1. fongy2

        Understood!…I think
I told ya b/f,I sorta became a Steeler fan
BECAUSE of the Dolphins. As the oldest child in my extended Italian-American family,I was
closest to my late cousin Robbie who was
just two months younger than me….
        he was a HUGE Dolphin
fan b/c of the two SuperBowls and the
        first real game I
        remember was watching
        Steelers-Dolphins on
        new years eve when I
        was like 7 years old
        @ my Aunt&Uncle in Cliffside Park….
Most of the family there etc…And almost
to spite or start a rivalry..As my Cousin
was rooting for his Dolphins, I started
        Cheering for the Steelers.
Well, in the next couple yrs they started winning big
        and I was hooked like
        any other 8/9 y/o.
        Met fan of course b/c
        I hated the yankees
        and my first few games
        were in that ’73 season @ Shea….
And a Knick and Ranger fan ’cause….
well…I grew up half a mile from the garden
and one of my uncles sold programs there in
        the early/mid 70s….

        1. Kingman 26

I was already a Met fan when my family moved to NC for 2 years from 73-75 and I discovered football during the 1973 season when the Phins were on the way to their 2nd straight Super Bowl–some of my next football memories were when Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield all jumped to the WFL after that!!

          I sure remember those 70s Dolphins-Steelers matchups!

Fong, GREAT talking to you as always my friend…have to do some work and get ready for a huge music conference tomorrow AM.

Will have a margarita for you and talk to you soon my friend!

Keep the orange-and-blue faith–better days are coming! Well, at least a new mgr and GM are!

          :-)

          1. fongy2

            Always
            my friend!
            And Heb
was right from a few days ago…
            Double shots of Padron Silver!
            No hangovers….
Although I must warn that those experiences for me
            were a decade
            ago….
            At 45,I
            have 5
            or 6 Tecates
            and I’m done!..You have a
            great night!!

          2. Kingman 26

            I will; you too!

I am 43, and still love the chilled Patron!

  10. fongy2

    b/t/w, hows San Antonio??…
Been to ALOT of States and cities,
    never San Antonio though.

    1. Kingman 26

Actually, with some very big exceptions, pretty mediocre and kind of ugly. And HOT. About 97 today!

The Alamo monument is beautifully preserved and wonderful. Right downtown, surrounded by a beautiful little park with a brook, all kinds of trees, benches, covered walkways, with much of the original structure surviving and a great monument to real heroes.

And the Riverwalk is also wonderful. Have been to most major US cities, and the Riverwalk is one of the most unique things I have seen in one. Basically a level below much of downtown, it meanders all through the downtown area, with quiet walkways on either side of the San Antonio River which flows through downtown, with parks, hotels, restaurants, and little ponds and waterfalls all along it. And boat ride tours through it. A little touristy to be sure, but still just awesome.

The rest of the city is pretty so-so, with lots of empty buildings.

But the Alamo and Riverwalk make it worthwhile for sure.

As does all of the amazing Tex-Mex and Latin food and great margaritas!

      1. fongy2

Brock, if you don’t mind…What are you doing in San Antonio??

        1. fongy2

          Nevermind!…
          Got it…

        2. Kingman 26

A HUGE music conference I am attending w/my bro for our biz.

The Texas Bandmasters Conference. 10–15,000 musicians, students, professors, teachers, journalists, etc.

We set up a booth and sell/promote our music publications, others we sell, DVDs we sell, etc.

Great for the biz; we publish print music and also carry it from most major publishers and sell it to musicians/schools/libraries/bands/etc all over the world, and this is one of the biggest conferences of its kind.

We sell DVDs, CDs, books too, but our focus is charts for bands, i.e., the music for songs which comes with parts for everyone in a band from a 4-5 piece combo to an 18+ piece big band. Everything from Sinatra and Ellington and Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis to Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Blues Brothers, War, even Nirvana and Led Zeppelin and Beatles arranged for big bands and combos—ANYTHING which is in print and right for bands to play.

          1. Hazmet

How ’bout a Nelson Riddle arrangement of Hocus Pocus by Focus. :)

Oh, and the Cowboys train here and are in our hotel…when we got here today, there were crazy fans everywhere and I guess Romo came out of the hotel and waded right into the crowd and signed tons of autographs. Really nice to see in today’s sports world. A real guy and a nice guy apparently.

the way i see it this team is still 1 game over .500 despite this terrible stretch after the all-star break. The offense will inevitably turn around but i still believe firing Jerry, HoJo and Shines is the correct move. I would give them this series at home as a last chance but after that goodbye…If we see inspired and winning baseball in the few games after the firing then you trade for Lilly, Westbrook etc. If not then just trade Francouer and don’t do much else.

Do the Mets make that move, most likely no but I still believe that is the best course of action.

I think in the end Omar/Wilpons mid-season move
will have been getting Beltran,Castillo & Ollie back
      from the DL.

I hope Bay is not actually done as any sort of power hitter (since we have him for another 3 years after this one)

and when will GMs learn that 4 year deals to 32 YO players are not likely to end well?

anyway, maybe because i just read the MiL summary, and we have a few OFs putting up some serious numbers. But, at least RF and/or CF will be open real soon.

too bad that there are some big bats that probably have to play LF!

I wonder if Bay is now the Mets most untradeable contract?
