Mets Coaching Staff To Live Another Day

According to Mets insider, Kevin Burkhardt, his baseball source tells have told him that Mets are keeping their coaching staff intact – at least for the moment . Jeez Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya should be renamed the Teflon Don’s – what kid of dirt do they have on Fred & Jeff ?!! I can’t explain how this team can ggo on a 2-9 road trip in the middle of a pennant chase and no heads roll !!! What kind of message does this send to the players ???!!! Better yet what kind of message does this send to the fans, speaking of which, Mets fans everywhere are stocking up on assault weapons, ammo and k-rations – and one fan has reportedly made a life size effigy of The Mets Mobile to burn !!

    Interesting Joe Janish writes,
“According to sources close to the situation, Howard Johnson will be relieved of his duties as batting coach for the New York Mets.

You may have read or heard Jon Heyman’s report that “there has been no discussion of Howard Johnson” and that Jerry Manuel’s job is “safe”. Kevin Burkhardt is tweeting similar “news”.

However, our sources are reporting quite the opposite. ”

It would be funny to see Joe scoop SNY.

    1. rustyjr

I hope you are right – but fire everyone ! Jerry down to nemo

      1. asod75

HoJo should have been fired long ago. This offense has been pretty bad for the better part of two years, injuries or no injuries. Yes I now team had a good batting average last year but it’s been a horrible situational hitting team for awhile and can’t drive in runs with the bases loaded to save its life. Time to move on…

    This from Mike Puma

After refusing to endorse the status of the Mets’ coaching staff following the team’s disastrous road trip yesterday, GM Omar Minaya said today that no changes would be made before tomorrow’s game.

When asked in an email if it was true that no changes were in the works for the coaching staff, Minaya said: “True.”

Another wonderful day in Mets land.

      1. Even Royals GM Dayton Moore isnt stupid enough to trade for our crap.

      2. We find out once again that Omar has no cojones, after the day he said we would have to “assess” some things and make some changes. Grow a set Omar, before NY replaces you.

      1. asod75

Actually, I’m hoping Omar gets replaced, along with the entire coaching staff, in the offseason. Although I don’t think anything truly improves until Jeff Wilpon becomes less involved with the day to day operations of the club. Hire a true team president/GM in charge of baseball decisions and let Jeffy go play on his swingset…..

        1. stickguy

much or all of this may actually be the plan. and if it is, it probably does make more sense to just run out the string with the current bunch, and make the changes in a logical, systematic order. IOW, have a plan for a change!

my big fear is that the shake up will lead to Jeffy taking on a bigger, not smaller, role. But, we shall see I guess.

      2. Mr North Jersey

Well they say those that don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This may be Minaya learning from history (history being the infamous Zambrano trade) by not willing to give up what he deems as prospects to go for it in 2010 unless the team shows him otherwise.

I can’t say what this means but I guess it’s imperative that the Mets don’t fall any further back in the playoff race if they are looking for something from the FO for the stretch run.

Barajas to DL, Mets call up Mike Hessman….

    1. Mr North Jersey

#Mets have placed Rod Barajas on 15-day DL with left oblique strain and purchased contract of Mike Hessman from Triple-A Buffalo. #Bisons

We are down to 2 catchers now if the Mets could move Ollie that would at least give the Mets a 25 man roster and not a 24 or 23 man roster as it was prior to today.

      1. ceetar

That’s not true. Jerry would rather use Ollie than K-Rod.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          That is just scary.

    3. stickguy

good for him. Nice to see the MiL lifers finally get a chance.

and before Knog goes nuts, he is just as viable an option for emergency CI and RH PH bat (with some pop) off the bench as anyone else.

and certainly more useful than having 3 catchers, especially when 1 can’t hit.

      1. asod75

While Hessman hasn’t gotten much of a chance at the major-league level, he’s slugged 13 homers in 168 major-league ABs along with six doubles. Has a .752 OPS despite .208 average (.477 slugging percentage). Has had a nice season in Buffalo and provides some power off the bench. Better than having three catchers.

      2. Kingman 26

Hey why not Val Pascucci and Figgy–then we might be able to compete with the Nats for last!

Scikt–Did you give Rusty that shot of the Float??

        1. gategem

Kong, would you have preferred Howard Hesseman? LOL

So basically, we’ll most likely have the same team the rest of the way. Which is fine, considering it’s not really worth including top prospects in a deal to try and save a season that’s probably not salvageable at this point anyway. Just hope fans stop showing up at CitiField and hit the Wilpons where it hurts….

    2. stickguy

that makes sense. Basically all it says is they will give it the rest of the week (only about 5 games) at home to get a final read on what they have.

  5. dirtysanchez

Boy, must be nice to have a job with the mets.

    1. asod75

Make good money, completely suck at your job, keep getting more chances to suck at your job while making same good money.

  6. gipperpdx

    Disgusting, disheartening, disenchanting.

There is ZERO accountability with this sorry franchise…and it SHOWS!

    From Mets Blog:

“The way I heard it, Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel expressed confidence to Ownership in the current roster and coaching staff, with a belief that the team can and will get back on track – helped out by having six consecutive games in Citi Field this week and the potential for new talent at the Trade Deadline.

The thing is, on Monday, August 9, after the Trade Deadline, after six games at home and six more on the road with the Phillies and Braves, if the Mets are below .500 and double-digits back of a playoff spot, a) the Mets will be irrelevant in the New York sports conversation, and b) Mets fans, if they still care, will lose their minds… at which point, I wonder how this decision will be viewed.”

    1. metsfan4decades

It’s hard to take any opinion MC has to heart. History shows he’ll be doing a 180 in about 4 days….

  9. Hazmet

This is like trying to take the bandaid off nice & slow so it doesn’t hurt. The only way to deal with firings that need to happen is to rip off the bandaid fast and get it over with and move on. This is completely pathetic. If there was any doubt that Omar & Jerry are attached at the hip this should dispell those doubts. I for one was one of them. Thinking Omar could be safe based on the performance of the rising young talent and Jerry would be out in the cold on his own. Omar standing shoulder to shoulder in the pitch to Ownership just seals the deal for me. Get this putrid sideshow over with.

  10. stickguy

never know with the Mets, but this reeks of Custer’s last stand. IOW, the owners push Omar’s back to the wall, and forced him to go all in with the current crew. But this has to be it. If they go down in flames, Omar is going down with his crew. Even with the mets I can’t see him walking away again.

Sure, they probably just shift him to a glorified couting role to earn some of his money, but he wil be out of the mix. Along with Jerry and the Keystones.

I actually don’t blame Omar though. If he had sold out the staff, he would have been in the same boat I guess, just all by himself!

what confuses me is why Jerry has any input into anything, since his head should be on the block.

anyway, people give the Wilpons a ton of grief, but they have been in the BB business a long time. They know how difficult it is to make serious organizational changes mid-year.

QUite possibly, they don’t see the team as a real contender either, and are content to let it stumble to the end of the year. But if this is true, they really, really, really have to be planning a wholesale house cleaning.

and being PR savvy as they are supposed to be, they should realize that while they will catch a ton of heat for doing nothing much right now, they will get a major bump up after the season when they clean house. Especially if they bring in a real BB mind to run things (with jeffy obviously, and publicly, stepping away from the BB operations side of the team.

    1. Hazmet

Poor block having to be so closely associated with Jerry. ;)

    2. Mr North Jersey

Remember before the season started when the Mets not spending a lot to sign a pitcher was good because the Mets would have all this money to spend at the trading deadline to pick up salary and add a starter for the stretch run?

Looks like the Mets may be saving that money a little longer than many expected.

      1. Hazmet

They must need the money to pay the waterbill for the field given this hot dry summer…

  11. whataputz

The Phillies, who have been to the last 2 World Series fired their hitting coach who helped get them there, because they were struggling. This says all you need to know. The Phillies make moves to win, and the Mets sit on their hands and make excuses. Obviously the hitting coach is not the one making outs, but when you’re big time hitters have struggled to stay consistent, and have underperformed, while your offense has been non-existent sending the team in a free fall and all but sealing the fact that the Mets will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, all with Johnson as hitting coach, the man needs to go.

If you’re not going to fire the hitting coach after this disgraceful road trip and given all the things that have transpired in the last 2 seasons, when will you ever do it? Hojo has done nothing to help David Wright, his mechanics have been off at times, his approach is currently atrocious, you had Jason Bay guessing at every pitch, Frenchy swinging at literally every single first pitch he ever sees. THIS IS WHAT HITTING COACHES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PAID TO CORRECT!! What does Hojo even do? I don’t get it. He’s expendable, yet he has been allowed to keep his position despite being terrible at his job. David Wright was a 320+ hitter, with 30 hr power, who had tremendous plate discipline, and seemed to thrive in 2 strike situations. Now, he strikes out every other at bat, has lost some pop, has decreased in average, and goes through plenty of streaks in which his approach is godawful. Just look at the last game. He comes up in the first inning with a runner on third and 1 out, and swings at a first pitch curveball, slowly grounding out to third, and failing to drive in the run. Hitting coaches are supposed to teach hitters how to approach these situations. You wait for a pitch to drive to the outfield, not swing at pitchers pitches, on the first pitch!

  12. oleosmirf

im done with the Manuel and co. Its clear the mets organization once again the Mets have faith in “their guys”.

however, Hessman has a lot of power. He certainly is no long term fix but is it that unrealistic that he could come in and hit a few homeruns and help jump start the offense a little. Is it possible for him to have a hot streak at the right time and a give us some unexpected results?

    1. Hazmet

Heck even just to give Wright a day off at third would be a plus.

      1. oleosmirf

eh I dont believe in giving your best players days off unless you can really afford to but for a team struggling in the power dept, this guy has been raking in AAA this year.

  13. rustyjr

I am just wondering what Jeff Wilpon’s excuse will be when he goes on The fatcesa show – if the Mets fail to make the playoffs again

    1. stickguy

unless he actually is as dumb as some posters seem to think, he will not go anywhere near a radio show. Hell, he won’t go anywhere near a microphone or camera of any kind.

  14. metsfan4decades

I’m not surprised there were no moves made today. I know I’ve said this before but I want any moves made to be well thought out, for the good of the team and not some knee jerk reaction to appease the fan base.

Don’t get me wrong…..I hate, hate, hate watching this team tank like this. If it’s in the team’s best interest to fire some coaches and Jerry, then by all means do so. But IF the reports we’ve been hearing are correct, and most if not all the players truly do like and respect Jerry, isn’t getting rid of him right now just going to make things worse with all blaming themselves? I know it’s a business but how long does it take for the guys to move past something like that?

With Willie, I think it was a little different. I’m not sure half the team had his back and playing under the ‘Willie Watch’, having to answer the same questions daily about their loyalty, had to be taking a toll.

If that same situation exists right now, then by all means clean house and clean it quick.

And is there anyone who doesn’t believe the house should have been cleaned last Oct? That would have been the optimum time. Start fresh going in. But nooooooo, we’re reliving the same nightmare – it’s 2008 all over again….

When does it all end? Either do it quick, right now, get it over with and get back to the business of playing baseball or don’t do it and start winning games. My biggest fear is they’ll do nothing, the team will continue to fail and it will be a miserable end to the 2010 season.

    1. ceetar

I thought it should’ve been cleaned after Manuel failed to do better than Willie in 2008, with Santana.

It should have been cleaned after 2009, when the team played sloppy baseball from wire to wire, and a band of no-names just hoping to have a job the next year quit on him in September.

It should’ve been cleaned in late april/early may when it was obvious he wasn’t part of the solution.

It should’ve been cleaned at the All-Star break after dropping a series to the Braves and continuing a trend of bad baseball, with the added bonus of three days to interview guys and make the right decision.

It should’ve been ended Thursday in LA when Omar met with them.

And it should/should’ve been ended after the pathetic road trip putting them in very dire straits.

  15. GravediggerHebner

Good. It doesn’t make any sense that the captain and officers get to leave the sinking ship before the passengers. They should stick around and go down with it.

    1. Mr North Jersey

So are you saying the 2010 Mets are equivalent to the SS Titanic? ;-)

      1. GravediggerHebner

I like to pull my punches so thank you for following through on that one.

Even though I far prefer manager/coaching/front office changes to be done during the off season I agree with each of the points in time that Ceetar outlines just above as being fair moments when something could have been justifiably done.

Obviously I most strongly agree with the ones that are not in-season. Unfortunately what has happened is this regime has been spared multiple times because of various excuses: Wagner got hurt in 2008; Everyone else got hurt in 2009. And now in-season it sounds like some other excuse is being used to spare them again.

I didn’t have high hopes for this season at the start so with where the team is now I’m disappointed but not devastated, yet hopeful, because barring some very unlikely group turnaround and/or trade this regime that should have ended multiple times before will finally end in October. I am not rooting for them to fail I’m simply rooting for them to play to and not over what I believed their potential to be because that will result in not enough success to keep this regime around.d

We will look back on this season as the beginning of a nice little run which I think is something Knogminn has been saying for a while now. Thole is about to get the best chance he’s had to establish himself. Dickey, unless his hip proves his undoing, has shown he can be a low cost productive rotation guy going forward. Ike & Niese are laying a very promising foundation for nice careers. I feel very good about the future the worst part is killing the time til it comes.

        1. Mr North Jersey

Dear God man, you need to get paid for writing your opinions. You are as good if not better at using the written word to express your thoughts in almost a poetic fashion than many so-called paid professionals.

          1. metsfan4decades

            I’ll second that.
That last sentence perfectly summed up my mindset right now….

        2. Kingman 26

First off let me express my admiration for Grave and let me express my gratitude for being positively mentioned.

As a real student of the real Titanic I must remind everyone that while Captain Smith (Omar) DID gallantly go down with the ship the owner Bruce Ismay (Jeffy W) cowardly took a lifeboat spot. One of Captain Smith’s first officers Charles Lightoller (Jerry) also got on a lifeboat.

So, while a large majority of the paying passengers and the captain DID perish by drowning or hypothermia, the owner and first officer did survive.

Not sure what all this means but they make great margaritas in San Antone.

  16. Mr North Jersey

Well if this is the last hurrah the Mets gave us a GREAT 32 game stretch ranging from May 22nd to June 27th where they went 23-9.

Before that they went 20-23 and since then they have gone 7-17 for a combined 27-40.

    1. GravediggerHebner

What’s the cliche? The truth lies somewhere in the middle? Well the middle is 50-49.

      1. ceetar

nah, we’ve had more down than up. We’re due another 35 games of winning streak. 25-10 should do it. would put us 16 games above .500 with 28 games left to play, which would be the perfect amount of time to throw it all away again.

        1. metsfan4decades

You know it’s bad when our very own ‘Optimistic Met Fan’ is predicting the sinking of the ship…..

          1. ceetar

not predicting, just noting the possibilities.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Even Ceetar knows his own optimism power is not strong enough to defeat Jerry’s stupid power + Omar’s inept power.

Mr N, Grave, MF4D et al, I must say again that the comment section of this site is far better than the actual content of just about any other Met site.

          5. metsfan4decades

You know, I was just thinking about that earlier when I read MCs latest opinion on doing nothing today.

Commiserating here on TRDMB sure beats trying to participate with the ledge jumpers on FWICG.com or the self proclaimed intellectuals on AA……

          6. Kingman 26

The racist ignorant whiners on Mets.com and the Star Ledger comment areas make FWICG’s comment page look like a baseball Mensa meeting.

          7. Mr North Jersey

You know the more I look at this pic I am beginning to wonder if Jeff Wipon is Gleek?

        2. stickguy

I know that most posters are so focused on the very recent past that they probably feel the Mets will be lucky to win 65 games this year.

But, taking over the optimist role for a moment, I still think this team is woefully underperfroming their potential.

and they have shown the ability thisyear to go from bad to good (and of course, back to bad) quite quickly.

So, maybe coming back home, they have a nice players only meeting, and a few guys actually rediscover their hitting ability (and if a couple get it, sometimes it is contagious).

who knows? Maybe they come out and have a nice rebound 5-1 homestand, and get themselves right back into the mix.

25-10 is not easy, but also not unheard of.

basically, they have to go IMO 41-22 the rest of the way to make the playoffs (just guestimating that 91 will do it). so, roll off another 23-9, and they only have to do 18-13 in the other 31 games. Not easy, but not impossible.

Or, even it out. 20-12 then 21-10 if you split the rest of the season in 1/2

Forget about the wilpons. And after this week (with whatever moves are or are not made), forget about Omar. By next monday, the only thing left will be ~55 games and the team on the field (and of course Hojo and Jerry!)

this team is schitzo. so while I don’t exactly expect it, I also would not be shocked to see them pull off a run. Despite (be damned!) Jerry.

At least the pitching is looking good, and that my friends is usually what carries teams to big runs this time of the year.

          1. Kingman 26

83-79 Stkci. Just as I predicted in the spring.

            And 98-64 next year.

The pitching was unreal and we just lost 3 of 4.

  17. GravediggerHebner

Well with Garza’s no-hitter the Mets & Padres are the last remaining teams without a no-no. Hooray?

    1. stickguy

man, was that a good trade for the Rays. I remember at the time harping that Omar should have been trying to use F Mart for that deal instead, but damn it, no one ever listens to me!

and the padres have some good pitching and a pitchers park, so put the money on them.

ignoring the fact of course that so do the mets!

but if I had to bet right now, I would put my money first on Dickey, then on Neise, to actually get it done.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Looks like I’m gonna lose my bet that it would be Oliver Perez.

    2. ceetar

Garza’s mine in the fantasy league if you were wondering.

      Darknova being the opponent.

      1. GravediggerHebner

        I was wondering. Thank you.

Now’s probably a good time to bring up the fact that I was the strongest voice behind eliminating no-hitters and perfect games as counting stats in our league before the season started.

On a lighter note in my other league that counts shutouts and complete games I have Garza.

        :-)

    3. gategem

      Damn you Jim Qualls. LOL

  18. stickguy

also, just to reiterate another of my recent predictions (that many of you poshed at).

The Phils will be in 1st place before the end of August (heck, I will even get bolder, and say they will be in 1st by 8/15).

but, there is still the WC! and even if the phils do get there, it doesn’t mean they will finish there!

    1. ceetar

They won’t be. They’re just not that good. And we’re going to sweep them that weekend to take over first.

      1. metsfan4decades

I have to agree here with Ceet. I still think the Braves are the team to beat.
Take today’s game, for example. The Phils have no closer. Lidge barely hung on by his fingernails to close out that game. I’d like to see some stats that dispute you very rarely make it to post season, or the WS with no closer….

    2. Kingman 26

      No chance Skitc.

All Bravos I am afraid to say, as Lidge blows his 46th save of the last two years.

      1. Kingman 26

Oops maybe Lidge did not blow the save after giving up the HR

  19. GravediggerHebner

    Oh well.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Just think today somewhere in the world a child was born destined to be the 1st Met to pitch a no-hitter.

      1. Mr North Jersey

I better start taking better care of myself if I want to live long enough to see him do it.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Pour yourself a glass of melted butter (2 sticks), sit back, relax and drink it down. Your heart will pitch a no-hitter before you know it.

          1. Mr North Jersey

Sounds like a recipe for “North Jersey Scampi”.

        2. metsfan4decades

          Ditto.

  20. oleosmirf

btw apparently Mets turned down Ramon Ramirez of the Sawks for Barajas. nice one Omar!

  21. Mr North Jersey

Getting tired of Oswalt’s “it’s going to have to work for both of us” crap.

Roy Oswalt told Bernando Fallas of the Houston Chronicle on Monday that he wouldn’t be opposed to pitching on the East Coast.

“That’s not an issue,” Oswalt told the Chronicle on Monday. “Like I’ve said from the beginning, it’s going to have to work for both of us.”

To translate “Hey I don’t give a f*ck where i play so long as i get well compensated for playing somewhere I don’t like.”

Hey Oswalt just shut the hell up and let your agent do all the talking. Every time I hear you say “it’s going to have to work for both of us” I want to slap you in the face with a Texas horseshoe.

While it would surprise the heck out of me I guess this means at least in theory that there is still a chance he could become a Met. But it’s going to have to work for both of us. :-O

Knowing out luck, we’d get Oswalt, the season would boil down to the last game of the season with Oswalt being blown out in the first inning w/o recording an out.

His post game comments would be something along the lines of: ‘it just didn’t work out for us’.
In which case, Opening day at Citi 2011 would include a pregame ceremony whereby Oswalt’s jersey would be burned, with the number never to be worn again by any NY Met.

no, we would get him, make a run next month, then at the beginning of September the back problem that shut him down early last year will flare up, and he will end up having back surgery and being out all of 2011 too!

I assume they just copied and pasted this article year after year right? no reason to rewrite the Oswalt stuff.
