This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The “Mets Come Alive !!” Edition 07-28-10

To say last nights game against the Cardinals was a must win would be a understatement. In fact I believe it was possibly one of – if not the most important games played thus far. The Mets needed to wash the shame that permeated their bodies from this past 2-9 road-trip and show that they were still alive. And Boy did they ever show both the National League leading Cy Young award candidate and the N.L League leading Cardinals by unleashing eight runs. Both Jeff Francouer and Jose Reyes went yard ( Jose’s was a impressive Pepsi Porch moonshot, while Frenchie’s was caught in the left center seats by a guy that looked like Jerry Manuel incognito). Oh and in case you didn’t know – General Jerry didn’t manage last nights game, because he was suspended for bumping a umpire in last weekends loss to the Dodgers. David Jauss acquitted himself well, with no unnecessary sacrifice bunts , and some very shrewd managing.
Congratulations go out to David Wright for collecting the 630th RBI of his career with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly which moves him past hitting coach Howard Johnson into
third place on the club’s all-time list. Next up is Mike Piazza, who is in second place with 655 RBIs.
JON NIESE has turned into the pitcher we hoped he would be. He looked a little shaky in the first two innings before settling down. He picked up his seventhwin of the season, pitching 6 innings of one-run ball.He is 3-2 in his last six starts last six starts, with a ERA of 2.09.
On some minor notes, R.A Dickey was examined by the Mets team doctors, and he has been cleared to make his next start.Forgotten reliever, Sean Green, pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his major league rehabilitation outing for St. Lucie. He walked one and struck out two. And lastly the Metssigned their fifth-round draft pick, Matt den Dekker yesterday. den Dekker hit .352 with 13 home runs to help the University of Florida to the College World Series. He will report to the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets.

                                                                                        ” I’M NOT DEAD YET !!!!”

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!

New York Mets purchased closer , Skip Lockwood from the Oakland A’s on July 28, 1975. Skip is probably the most overlooked closer in the history of this franchise. He was one of the few bright spots from ’77-’79

New York Mets purchased outfielder, Gil Flores from the California Angels on July 28, 1978. Does anyone remember Gil Flores? I sure as hell don’t !

New York Mets traded club house pariah and outfielder, Bobby Bonilla and minor league picher,Jimmy Williams to the Baltimore Orioles for “5 tool outfielder, Alex Ochoa andback -up outfielder, Damon Buford on July 28, 1995. Hey we got rid of Bobby Bo and I remember being ecstatic at the time

New York Metstraded reserve infielder, Melvin Mora, backup third baseman, Mike Kinkade, and minor leaguers, Lesli Brea and Pat Gorman to the Baltimore Orioles for shortstop Mike Bordick  on July 28, 2000. This was the worst possibly deal the Mets made during that season. They traded away the clutch Mora for Bordick , in what was a panic move by Steve “ I’M A DOUCHE” Phillips, after Rey Ordonez went down with a severe leg injury. Bordick did little to nothing both in the field and at the plate for the Mets, and was gone by the next season.

New York Mets traded pitcher Paul Wilson, and Jason Tyner,to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for reserve outfielder, Bubba Trammell and reliever , Rick White on July 28, 2000.  I thought this was a great trade, because both Trammell and White were clutch going down th ’00 pennant stretch and well into that post season.

New York Mets traded reliever Graeme Lloyd  to the Kansas City Royals for Jeremy Hill on July 28, 2003.

The Metswere so impressed with Mo Vaughn’s style of motivation, that he is now allowed free reign at the Acella Club. By the way reservations for the club have now been backed up until 2013 !

You had to go ruin the positives by mentioning Sean Green…..LOL
Seriously, if he can be effective, I’ve got no problem with him. It’s just I’ve never seen him be consistently effective yet.

Baseball is indeed a funny game. Of all the games you wouldn’t expect the offense to break out in, it would have been this one with Wainwright starting. Just goes to show if we can hit Wainwright, we should be able to hit just about anyone. I have no idea what gets in their head on the road….

Great game though and it keeps my hopes alive.

Nice. Here’s hoping Johan continues to look sharp and the bats continue to hit. I’m sure Johan would appreciate some runs….

I always hated the Mora trade. I had a feeling he would be decent through his career.

He did look fairly overmatched at Short, and Bordick probably would’ve been okay if he wasn’t playing with a broken hand, but yeah, Mora did look like a solid piece.

Yeah, I know hindsight is usually 20/20, but that was one I had a good feeling about. I had bought into the hype about Jefferies, so it was hoping to actually see a prospect come up and succeed from the farm system. After Jefferies, Generation Lame, err, Generation K and such, it is so nice seeing Pelf, Wright, Reyes, and now Ike, Niese all contributing. Nothing like Homegrown goodness.

Angel Pagan! (he’s at least as homegrown as Andy Pettitte anyway)

Has there been any word on Bay? Are they dropping the DL on him? 2 ways to go with this. As a Met, you never put a person on the DL when you should, as you want to hamstring the bench as much as possible. or the 2nd is if he is sucking it up, any minor injury will land you on the DL. Not sure which option they’ll be running with.

Last night they reported they’ll be monitoring Bay through the next 72 hours and reevaluate then.

To me, they should have just put him on the 15 day DL. Any concussion, however mild, probably warrants 2 weeks rest, especially if any time during those couple of weeks they expect him to get on a plane and fly anywhere. Flying seems to always make the symptoms worse…

if he’s not cleared by Friday, put him in a car to Atlanta. Got an off day to travel to Philadelphia after that, and then quick trip back to NY.

Good news: the Mets are signing a pitcher this Saturday, for sure.

    Bad News: It’s a one-day contract and he’s 45.

    1. njstuckintx

      Whom? pray tell…

      1. ceetar

;-) He’ll be on the field Sunday in a Mets uniform too!

      2. njstuckintx

Is this for the induction to the HOF? Gooden? I’ve been so far out of the loop, I was starting to wonder if they were actually considering signing a pitcher for 1 start. Coffee. Need Coffee.

Leave it to you Rustoleum to make
me recall the summer I was 12 y/o!
GIL FLORES!…Now thats a blast from the past!…If you were old enough to collect baseball cards back then,
you’d be assured of getting at least
5 Gil Flores’, 5 Bill Almonds’ and
5 Leo Fosters for every good player’s card when opening a pack!
B/T/W, I likely jinxed us after last
nights game ’cause as soon as KRod
got Pujols, I turned to my dog and
said “Hey, maybe we ain’t dead yet”.
And more proof of what a great game
baseball is, we can’t score runs off
anyone for two weeks, Wainright has
been the best Pitcher in the league,
    and we bomb him…Go figure.
I see where Sean Green is working his
way back…BUT what about the guy
Omar sold us on as our 8th inning
    set-up man, Kelvim Escobar???…
Or like El Duque before him, is he
just here to collect a check???

  7. youngvalerawest

Any coincidence that the Mets finally win and score runs without Bay and Manuel?

    hmmmmmmm….

    ;)

    1. njstuckintx

Maybe it was the influence of Mike Hessman…
