Rumor: Mets interested in lefty hurler

Swingin' at Citi

Swingin' at Citi

A tip of the TRDMB cap (sans a wag of the TRDMB finger) to MLBTR for pointing out that Scott Miller of CBS Sports has reported the Mets are one of multiple teams interested in acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Maholm.

Miller notes that Maholm is under contract through 2011 at the reasonable salary of $5.75 million plus has a $9.75 million option for 2012 (with a $750,000 buyout).

Maholm, the 8th overall pick in the 2003 draft, has a lifetime ERA of 4.36 to go with a won-loss record of 44-53.  Of particular interest to Mets fans the left hander has never spent a day on the disabled list in his 6 major league seasons.  Less interesting perhaps his lifetime batting average is .116 and his middle name is Gurner which google translator tells us is German for work conditions. So there’s that…

Funnies trade rumor of the week:

The Mets shopped Oliver Perez today, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link).

    Isn’t maholm a Hawaiian greeting?
So his name would translate to small work conditions greetings.

Can the man throw strikes and go through the lineup more than once without getting lit up?
