Please release Oliver Perez

Please! Pretty please with sugar on top.  Please release this sorry excuse for a major league player.  Please release Oliver Perez.  It’s a mistake, a big 36 million dollar mistake.  Every team makes one every now and again and Oliver Perez just happens to be the Mets mistake and now for the sake of this team, the mistake must be corrected.

If Oliver Perez does not accept an assignment to the Minors than the Mets should outright release him.  Yes I understand that it’s not my money and I do understand that another team can pick him up and fix him(god forbid).   I also know that he can be put on waivers but let’s be honest, the whole league knows he’s a waste of time so let’s just cut him out like a bad mole.

Right now Oliver Perez handcuffs the team by his inability to pitch in any situation.  He takes up space and it’s very obvious to all that Jerry Manuel will go to him only as a last resort (we saw that last week remember?)  Jerry said he will not pitch him during the Home Stand.  You know what that means right?  Perez could wear his Street shoes and pack extra sunflower seeds for the rest of the week!

If Perez refuses to accept a Minor League Assignment then he is not a team player and doesn’t deserve to be any team.

Come on Omar, Jeff, and Fred,  suck it up, admit you made a mistake and rid the team of this Bum.

And while your at it, how about trading Castillo to a Team to be Named Later.

Since this season is pretty much over, the Mets offseason plan IMO should be

    1) gut the entire front office and coaching staff except for Chip Hale. Hire Kevin Towers as GM and Bobby Valentine as Manager.

    2) flat out release Ollie and Castillo if no team is willing to trade for them (which obviously no team will unless we take back an equally terrible player/contract in return)

    3) SP: resign Dickey as the #5 SP and acquire another SP in the offseason. I would suggest a low risk/high reward for someone like Webb/Young/Duchscherer as after Lee there is no-one i find appealing. Towers is notorious for finding great steals for the pitching staff.

    4) RP: keep Takahashi, Parnell, Feliciano, K-Rod. give Dessens and Acosta an opportunity to make the team but by no means guarantee it. Get a nice collection of arms and maybe you find someone who fits. Again Towers is good when it comes to finding pitchers.

    5) lineup: look to trade Beltran, if not then let him finish his contract out. sign a 1 year stop-gap to replace Castillo. I dont want to hear about Tejada, he can replace Cora in 2012. The best FA options IMO are 1) Juan Uribe 2) Ty Wigginton 3) Jose Lopez 4) Orlando Hudson 5) Felipe Lopez. The Mets need backup catcher that can hit LHP if Blanco is not retained. Varitek would be perfect as strictly a backup. other options (for strictly a backup) i like are the 2 older Molina brothers, Ramon Hernandez or Gerald Laird. We also will need a RH OF bat on the bench to compliment Catcher, Murphy, Cora, Carter/Hessman. someone like Coco Crisp or Reed Johnson works.

    I believe this plan

    1. njstuckintx

It’s a plan, for sure. I follow it. I doubt #1 would happen. They aren’t bringing back bobby V. They just aren’t. I wish they would, but they won’t. I’d love Towers, but I know in my heart that Omar will be back for another year. Call it 6th sense, woman’s intuition, what ever.

Ollie I can see going away. Castillo, prob only through trade.

#3 I’m a big fan of signing up Dickey. We all joked and bashed when he was signed. Now we’re all singing his praise. We were wrong.

#4 & 5… can’t argue with pen plan and as for Beltran, the only way i see him getting traded is if the team’s in the crapper and he wants out at the trade deadline. That whole NTC and all…

      1. oleosmirf

yes i meant to say how this would never happen. Towers is perfect to be the GM. the guy is known for his ability to develop pitchers (something Omar is terrible at). I could def see Bobby V getting offered the job.

The Mets need a PR boost and what better than Bobby V although the question is does he want the job?

        1. njstuckintx

Other than billy martin, what other manager has ever come back to manage the team they were booted from in the past?

          1. oleosmirf

i understand that but the Mets attendance is going to plummet next season. Unless they manage to outbid the Yanks and Sawks for Cliff Lee (which isnt gonna happen) i dont see how they can keep people in the building with basically the same team and front office as always

  2. metsfan4decades

    ‘Free Ollie’.

Baseball Digest Mike Silva sums up his latest post on crediting Omar for not making recent trade offers and standing pat:

The Mets are focused on keeping their young talent at the deadline. You may not agree with it, but they are showing some conviction to the long term. This isn’t an aging team that can’t win in the future. With the Phillies “tapped out” financially going forward I believe there will be plenty more opportunities to compete in the NL East 2011 and beyond. And no, the Braves roster doesn’t scare me either.

  3. oleosmirf

btw the Mets turned down Octavio Dotel for Robert Carson. now of course the Mets are saying they wont trade Carson but you know Dotel’s 2 mil left on his deal is the deciding factor here.

    1. trs86

Why would they trade Carson for Dotel?

      1. oleosmirf

b/c Carson is more than likely never going to amount to anything

        1. GravediggerHebner

True but Dotel is an old, overpaid, middle reliever disguised as a closer on a bad team.

        2. tkfj2

The trade makes no sense all around. It’s pretty pointless.

The BP is fine if we cut Ollie loose and call up a RHP like Cordero or Bruney.

Dotel is not much better than those 2.

        3. trs86

So you are in favor of making a trade to make a trade?

  4. GravediggerHebner

    http://twitter.com/SI_JonHeyman/status/20002186347

Essentially “Ollie refuses to go to minors.”

    1. trs86

Time to go. Either you work that deal with the Cubs or you release him. Pick your poison.

      1. njstuckintx

        I choose arsenic.

        1. Kingman 26

          HAHA!

You are on a seriously fine humor roll lately….please keep it up; we need it badly.

As for Ollie, what a rotten situation.

Get him to the minors or DL him with a fake injury. Let he and Boras file a grievance and eat more time.

DO NOT release him and let him get his last 16+ million for doing nothing!

          Demote or DL.

Or tie his arms behind his back and let Frenchy use him as a pinata for 10-15 minutes. I may be serious; I am not sure.

          1. oleosmirf

hurting the team just to spite him is not a good plan

          2. Kingman 26

And how exactly would sending him to the minors or putting him on the DL hurt the team?

I hope you have a better answer than you did on Castillo’s clubhouse influence.

          3. oleosmirf

they cant put him in the minors. its release or stay

      2. GravediggerHebner

I doubt the Mets have the balls to do it but if my choices were:

trade Ollie & Castillo to the Cubs for Zambrano or

        release Ollie & Castillo,

I’d release them. I’m not adding an $18 million contract to 2012 just to get rid of these two.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          agreed

        2. Kingman 26

There is no way the Wilpons are taking on Zambrano’s salary. It is not happening, and I PRAY that it does and everyone calls me a Nabob. But it’s not happening.

I would say release Castillo and let Tejada play.

Ollie, I say torment him. AAA or DL.

          1. trs86

Kingman you actually think it would be a GOOD idea to take on his salary?

          2. Kingman 26

I think that if we could get rid of Ollie and Castillo’s entire deals, then yes, it is worth looking at. Especially if the Cubs eat a little of Zambrano’s money. The salaries cancel each other out this year and next, and if the Cubs ate say 5 mil each for 2011 and 2012, yes, I would do it.

I think the whole situation sucks though.

I think Zambrano MIGHT rebound with a fresh start.

Ollie and Slappy equal 18 mil for 2012 and are not going to play. This way, we MIGHT get something for that money. Zambrano is only 29 and was pretty good as recently as last year. Maybe this recent situation has changed him; he sure sounds contrite and ready to grow up.

However, I am now in the small camp who believe that while the Wilpons are NOT broke and are NOT cheap, they are very much adhering to a lower payroll.

          3. Kingman 26

Oops 18 mil for 2011 of course.

Not sure if they will get contracts equal to that for 2012 from anyone.

            :-)

        3. trs86

I don’t see them releasing Castillo for sure. I can see it with Ollie.

    2. tkfj2

Why does Ollie have any clout in this situation? Refuse to go to the minors, then just release his arse already.

  5. trs86

I like Sherman’s new plan of trading for Wandy. He has had a little bit of an off year this year but could easily slot in next year and the change to Citi could help.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I agree with your thought above about Castillo. If he’s released I would expect that more after the season not now.

I also agree with you on Sherman’s idea. But it strikes me as such an un-Met-like thing to do I’d be shocked if they did it. And that is taking into consideration the alleged public stance (I’ve only seen it reported indirectly) that the Mets are actually looking for pitchers just like him i.e. underperforming currently but with good past and under contract after 2010.

    2. dirtysanchez

all depends on what it takes to get done. Wandy could be a good option for the back end of the rotation

    3. oleosmirf

not gonna happen though. adding 2 mil in payroll and giving up prospects…no way…

  6. Mr North Jersey

Again if the Mets do not wish to give up prospects then at least give the Mets the best 25 man roster possible.

Ollie is dead weight everyone knows that he is just wasting a roster spot.

Takahashi who will start today should be in the bullpen.

The Mets need to add a 5th starter.

If they rather play with what they have in house fine but then use what you have.

Bring up Gee as the 5th starter and give him a look see and put Taka in the pen or continue to start Taka and put Gee in the pen.

As far as Castillo goes he is no longer the future the Mets should create one of those convenient DL stints for Castillo and call up Tejada or even the AA kid Joshua Satin who has had a good minor league career so far.

    1. Kingman 26

      Totally agree.

      Let’s see Gee and Tejada.

Really cannot hurt at all and might help the team, as it also gets Taka in the pen.

      More Junior Core please.

      1. oleosmirf

we’ve already seen Tejada and we know he isn’t ready.

    2. oleosmirf

at this point why not see what Gee has…barring a miracle, this season is over…

  7. metsfan4decades

    Small consoliations:

    Rockies collect 11 straight hits

“I’d never seen an inning like that,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “We had two outs and two strikes on a hitter and they score 12 runs. I’d never seen an inning like that.”
    ********************

I said last night in the Dugout…it could always be worse – we could be Cub fans.

    1. dirtysanchez

true…but at this point…the line between cubs and met fans is almost non existent…

      1. GravediggerHebner

Well, at least some of us are old enough to remember our last World Series. No Cubs fans are – they’re all dead.

        1. Kingman 26

          LOL!

      2. tkfj2

and the line between the Mets and Cubs, is a cosmetic better record.

  8. tkfj2

Trade a PTBNL for Wiggy, play him at 2nd.

    Release Ollie, call up Cordero.

After the season offer Cora a coaching position, and find a new 2nd base core

Won’t make us much better, make me happier though.

    1. oleosmirf

wigginton made the AS team. he will demand much more than that…

  9. GravediggerHebner

Courtesy Matt Pignataro of 7 Train To Shea, here’s how today has gone down so far for the Mets:

    * The Mets rejected an offer that would have sent Josh Thole and Bobby Parnell to the Astros for Brett Myers, reports Jon Heyman of SI.com.

    * The Cubs wanted Josh Thole in a deal for Ted Lilly.

    * According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Pirates asked for pitching prospect Robert Carson for Octavio Dotel, but the Mets said no.

    * The Mets offered Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez to the Cubs for Carlos Zambrano, but Cubs didn’t want Castillo, says Jon Heyman of SI.com.

    1. Kingman 26

Well, if the Astros really asked for those two guys for Myers, that is too funny to even laugh at.

    2. metsfan4decades

And here’s a look at the Mets trade history approaching the deadline:

So the NY Mets are neither sellers nor buyers, it appears….

      1. Mr North Jersey

Well we did trade Mike Jacobs but somehow Baseball America did not feel it was relevant to post it. :-D

    2. GravediggerHebner

They forgot Mets sign Ramon Ortiz & Chad Cordero to minor league contracts.

  11. GravediggerHebner

    AnthonyDiComo

Would be tough for #Mets to justify deadline shopping. They could fall to 4th place (7th in Wild Card) with a loss tonight.

    1. tkfj2

Makes a ton of sense. Don’t want another Kazmir for Zambrano.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Yup DiComo is right hence let’s get rid of Ollie.

Bring up Gee or Misch for that matter but I’d prefer to see Gee myself as he at least has more upside than Misch imo.

Can Castillo have some sort of stiffnees so Mets can DL him and bring up the youth of Tejada and or the new blood of a Satin.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I agree with what Oleo noted somewhere above – Tejada showed he’s not ready. Bringing him up could be really ugly if he hits .135 or something. I think he needs more seasoning. He’s 20 I think AAA is perfectly reasonable for now. Turner is the only guy who I think they could plug in there for the balance of this season.

Gee or Misch I agree go with Gee because we’ve been there, done that with Misch.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          I agree with Oleo’s assesment.

I should say I am biased toward Tejada. Even with his offensive struggles I enjoyed watching him play the field. I can’t put my finger on it but something about the way he carried himself was refreshing to see for me.

          1. GravediggerHebner

Understood. Any player that doesn’t exude “jaded millionaire veteran” is a pleasure to watch.

  12. GravediggerHebner

Twitter is hilarious today. Mets Fever is having a nervous breakdown and Mack’s Mets is trying to talk him in off the ledge.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Uh oh, looks like Mets Fever’s taking the lead – Mack’s Mets now roasting the Mets too. Room for two on that ledge?

      1. metsfan4decades

I almost signed up for twitter going into this week just so I could keep up with the latest and greatest. Talked myself out of it though. Was afraid I’d get addicted and spend even more time reading then I do now – LOL.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I resisted for a long time but now I’m hooked. At least there are none of the negative issues such as those associated with Facebook.

    2. Mr North Jersey

      lol i saw that.

      I like this from DiComo

Should note that #Mets have made two major deadline deals under Minaya’s watch: acquiring Castillo (’07) and Ollie (’06).

The Dodgers acquired veteran lefty Ted Lilly, infielder Ryan Theriot, and $2.5MM from the Cubs for second baseman Blake DeWitt and minor league pitchers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit today. Lilly has $4.24MM remaining on his contract, while Theriot has $918K. The Cubs are picking up about half of the tab on the players they’re sending.

        1. steveo

The only way we get caught is if the cops are yankee fans

    2. GravediggerHebner

      Or slightly more humane:

The Mets have a “kiddie” area out back of Citi Field which has a dunk tank. Send Ollie out there and give him 3 balls. If he can “dunk” someone with at least 2 of the 3 throws he can stay, if he can’t then he’s cut.

      1. steveo

Better yet he’s still a met employee I say put him in the dunk tank and let the kids sink him someone hits him in the head he’s done kids don’t go to jail for long I think I could convince one of mine to do it for a starwars toy

But it would be so much MORE fun if the Mets were rumored in anything at all during the last 3 hours. They pretty much got written off in the 11:00am hour and haven’t been heard from since.

        Yup.

On another note I don’t think I HAVE EVER listened to Steve Phillips talk on and on as much as I have today and I fear I may have experienced permanent damage because of it.

If this was basketball, teams would line up around the corner to trade for Ollie and Castillo.

Trading for Zamby is an interesting idea, but if I were the Mets, I would have the Cubs pickup 2/3 or his $18M in 2012 (~$12M). $18M is a lot of money for middle of the rotation type of pitcher. He does have a vesting player’s option in 2013, but it would never vest. He has to finish like 3rd or 4th in Cy Young voting for the option to vest.

I guess the Yanks found “right” opportunities to improve their best record in the MLB while the Mets can’t seem to find “right” opportunities to improve.

In the end we have seen that either the mets are truley broke and or omar is a complete moron.with a little less than 60 games left the master gm doesn’t get another arm for the rotation. I know allot of people say that a # five starter is just a guy who is a 500 pitcher such as takahashi but that’s in the begining of the year when the 5th game in the rotation isn’t important, but now at the end of the year when every win counts the #5 man is as important as the # 1.Either omar the genius or the wilpons felt it wasn’t that important, and they sell us on we have to hold on to our prospects. And who are these prospects are they # 1 picks are they having career years in the minors no.And then there are those who say we should trade players or be sellers why don’t they do that? Beacause the wilpons will have to admit that this team is dead and then no one would come out to see their mets ,thus further putting them in the red this managment is a real joke from the owners down to the gm better luck next year I guess.

well i will not blast Omar for not making any trades as this current 25 man roster plus coaching staff is not good enough to make the playoffs.

however, its an absolute crime if Ollie continues to stay on the roster. at least put the best 25 man roster you can out there. Us fan’s deserve that much
