Stinson has the chance to be Legen… wait for it and you’ll probably have an upset stomach at the last of this… Dary!

Looking more promising that the Major league team….

2. njstuckintx

I sure hope it looks promising. I was looking at the FA list for 2011 and I must say, it is pretty ugly. The kids are going to have to step it up, cause pickings are slim.

Going to stick this comment here, even though it’s not relevant to this post:

No remedy in sight as Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur’s hitting struggles continue.

http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2010/08/jeff_franceour_feature_story.html

“I get so anxious,” Francoeur said. “I don’t know. Part of me thinks I need to go on medicine. I do.”

Wait….there is medication out there that will help some of these guys stop pressing at the plate? Quick, bring it on in and start stocking it. Give it out like candy in the dugout.

Start Justin Turner please

5. rustyjr

@ a rest stop in Ct – where the hell is everybody ? Also has Ollie P been cut yet ?

1. njstuckintx

Well, I’m in Texas and no word on Ollie. My guess is he won’t be. :(

6. metro

100% not saying Turner is anything special but

Player career in minors- 293/414/390-804 OPS
Turner career in minors-307/373/430- 803 OPS

Player a is now in his 10th big league season and has made almost 20 million dollars in baseball

1. stickguy

I like turner. He is the guy that was up for a week or so, right? Thought he was a good pickup at the time, and would much rather see him than Cora!

7. stickguy

interesting article. I in particular love the stats on Cora. He has a lower OPS than the Brewers pitChINg staff. amazing. He realistically should be cut too, since 2 mill for next year is nonsense.

http://www.patrickfloodblog.com/2010/08/who-are-mets.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PatrickFloodsMetsBlog-ExileOn126thStreet+%28Patrick+Flood%27s+Mets+Blog+-+Exile+on+126th+Street%29

Ollie does need to go.

But, Jerry is not a scapecoat really. He is just not good.

1. GravediggerHebner

I enjoy and respect Mr. Flood’s work but he’s been pushing that whole “Cora to pitching staffs” comparison on twitter for a while now and it’s just specious. Comparing him to other MLB infielders is enough to make the point that he’s not good and needs to be sent away.

Saw Ron Artest rapping on FWIG.com. Pretty funny stuff.

9. njstuckintx

Slow day today, considering all there is to debate is the level of suckiness the Mets are currently hovering at.

1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I was looking at AL East standings and the Yanks are almost 30 games above .500. Just made my morning….

1. njstuckintx

When you can pick up a Wood and Berkman, well, just because, I’m not all that surprised. I do like that the Rays are only 1 game back.

1. GravediggerHebner

Agreed on the Rays. Sadly after the Mets HOF ceremony yesterday my sports high point of the day was listening to a Yankee fan call in to radio and freak out at Joe Girardi for resting ARod against the Rays.

Caller: “How can Girardi sit ARod when every game against the Rays is so important? If ARod needed rest so badly he should have sat him against Cleveland.”

Host: “I can only guess that Girardi just wanted ARod to get his 600th HR out of the way and felt Cleveland’s pitching staff was a great help to him accomplishing that. Then when he didn’t get it he still needed rest sooner rather than later.”

Obviously that’s just a host’s guess but if Girardi is managing around a “historic home run” that’s pretty funny and makes me hope more strongly than ever that the Yankees miss the playoffs by 1 game.

1. metsfan4decades

Just goes to show you that it’s not all the manager and more to do with the level of talent on the team.

2. DNDJohan aka kistics

they got Berkman and Wood without giving up their top prospects plus some salary relief from both teams. Why is it that all the other teams manage to do this and the Mets don’t.

1. njstuckintx

Budweiser once asked the famous question, Why ask why? You’ll only give yourself a headache looking for sane rationale in the Asylum in Flushing.

2. DNDJohan aka kistics

sigh….

3. GravediggerHebner

While I’ve disagreed with you recently on the merits of certain trade proposals (both rumored ones and those we’ve just made up here) I think we both agree that the Mets front office is hardly renowned for it’s “thinking.”

Expecting them to be creative is to bring on disappointment and I think it’s fair to call many deadline day deals creative although for the Yankees it’s easy to be creative when money is absolutely not an object in any respect.

10. saltygary

Decided to procrastinate since I have no desire to work today. So I went through the roster (using baseball-reference.com to get current and projected salaries since I cannot find anything all in one spot on the interweb.

For 2010 it looks like the payroll will come out to $123.025m, give or take adds and drops with min salaries. ESPN has it at 136m but the itemized numbers they display only come up to 96 million so I cannot verify their math.

2011 payroll is currently at 116.05m for 12 players on the current 40 man roster. This takes in that Thole will be the Catcher and Ike at First. Also if Reyes’s 11m option is picked up instead of the 500k buyout. This means the team would still need to sign a LF (Pagan is ARB) 3 SP (Pelf is ARB and Niese is Pre-ARB and make it 4 SP needed if Ollie is dropped). For the Bullpen only KROD and Igarashi have contracts for next year.

2012 payroll is at 72.5 if KRODs 17.5 option kicks in (Option becomes guaranteed with 1. 55 games finished in 2011 and 2. 100 games finished in 2010-2011 and 3. Doctors declare player is healthy after 2011) or 58.5 if KROD’s 3.5 buyout is initiated. The other players signed to this season are Wright @ 15m, Bay @ 16m and Santana @ 24m.

2013 payroll is at 57.5 Wright @ 16m (1m Buyout), Bay @ 16m and Santana @ 25.5m

2014 payroll could be at 42 Bay @ 17m (3m Buyout – Vesting Option 600 Pas in 2013 or 500 Pas in both 2012 and 2013), and Santana @ 25.5m (5.5m Buyout – Vesting based on CY Young and Inning Pitch)

1. saltygary

FYI 2011 includes Cora’s 2m option as well.

2. metsfan4decades

Interesting…thanks for the legwork.
And I hear you about Monday and no desire to work..

We have some money to play with next year and beyond. Is going to be interesting to see how the Mets spend it….

3. njstuckintx

I really hope they get smart about it and buy out niese of his Arb. Years. Spend some now to get a friendly contract for many years. I know, it’s only been 1 season, but something to consider. A la Longoria, Braun, etc.

1. saltygary

They did it with Wright and Reyes so it’s possible.

1. njstuckintx

I sure hope so. Heck, do it for Ike too. Plagerism of the Rays book o’ baseball might be good idea. granted having # 1 picks for many years in a row helps, but you get the drift.

1. saltygary

Too late but the first link is what I’ve been searching for because I remembered seeing it a couple months ago.

Looks like I missed Matthews contract but had all the rest.

2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Does anyone know how Pelf’s Arb 1 salary works? I know there’s a rule for something like no less than 80% of previous season’s salary or something like that. He makes $500k this season, so does that mean Pelf will be paid something like $400k?

1. GravediggerHebner

I believe you are correct on the “no less than 80%” thing.

But I think expecting Pelfrey to be paid less than he’s making this season isn’t realistic. Yes he’s been disappointing recently but he’s still 10-5, 4.10 and with numbers like that I would imagine he’d be getting a raise, not a cut.

What I don’t know is what a reasonable figure to expect him to make is. I’m not up on the comparable contracts and if there is a website that projects such things I haven’t found it.

1. DNDJohan aka kistics

So the upside is limitless but the downside has limits?

2. GravediggerHebner

I don’t think that’s quite true I think the upside has limits based on comparing the specific player’s service time and performance with other players from the recent past service time and performance then a salary is assigned based on how those past players were compensated.

I hope this article will be informative.

4. Mr North Jersey

You think if Mets get payroll down enough Lebron will play for us after his contract is up?

1. DNDJohan aka kistics

it’ll be the “Second Decision”

5. GravediggerHebner

What I take from this math is that if the Mets are willing and able to simply approach their 2009 payroll numbers (which in 2011 and forward are not right up against luxury tax) they can field a very good team provided they use the money wisely.

So all I’m asking the Mets to do is be willing, able & wise. No problem.

6. saltygary

From what I can gather :) payroll has to be a bigger concern for next season than it was for this season and probably a big reason why no payroll was added. For starters they will need to add 3 SP (4 if you replace Ollie), 1 Position and most of the bullpen for 10m if they don’t want to add payroll for next season. Then there are the bench players that will need to be added as well. They will be fools if they don’t dfa Cora before the option.

1. njstuckintx

Considering his 2 mil can get you 2-3 bench players of similar ability, I think you are correct.

11. metro

The Mets are a stunning 1-13 in games where Oliver Perez pitched and the 1 win he was pulled after 3.2 innings

1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Nice!

his evil train-robber goatee and burns isn’t helping his case. But, I guess if you know you’re the villian, might as well dress the part.
Ceciliani also leads the league in games (43), hits (66), at bats (169), triples (9), total bases (95), and runs scored (38). He is second in on-base percentage (.444), third in extra-base hits (20), tied for third in stolen bases (15), and fourth in slugging percentage (.562). In addition, the Madras, Oregon native has played spectacular defense, patrolling MCU Park’s vast centerfield (the deepest in the league, at 412 feet) with speed, agility, and fearlessness. He routinely cuts off sinking liners from falling in front of him, races gap to gap like a thouroughbred to eliminate extra-base hits, and has made run-saving — and game-saving — over-the-shoulder catches and sliding catches on the warning track, as well.
http://www.brooklyncyclones.com/news/topstories/index.html?article_id=919

1. GravediggerHebner

I recall when the Mets drafted him there were some comparisons to Jacoby Ellsbury. I hope Ceciliani remains healthier than Ellsbury has.

1. metro

Same hometown as Ellsbury too

2. GravediggerHebner

Metro do you have a feel for what is going on in Brooklyn?

What I mean is are they are 1st place club because they’re just that good or are they a 1st place club because the Mets have engaged in for lack of a better word shenanigans by putting people on the club who if they were in other teams’ systems would be at a higher level of the minors?

1. metro

Brooklyn has some legit talent this year. They haven’t “tilted the table” too much (or not as much as in years past). Some guys like Wes Wrenn are kind of ringers but-

Vaughn
Ceciliani
Harrison
Cuan
Almonte
Fraser
Forsythe

are all legit prospects and Sandoval may be a find

1. GravediggerHebner

Thank you. Glad to hear that. I have heard enough about this phenomenon in the past that I was concerned they may be doing it again.

Pretty cool that 3 of the guys you mentioned typically bat 1-2-3 in the order. I haven’t had a chance to get to Coney this season but I am looking forward to Thursday night’s SNY Cyclones game.

1. metro

Harrison has kind of slipped under the radar but there were teams that liked him as a plus offensive CF (moving him to the OF) as most don’t see him long term at 3b, he is oft-injured which is why he slipped in the draft. Most years you could easily blast the Mets for loading up BK (and they certainly have a few guys like that) but there is legit talent there.

13. njstuckintx

Since he’s technically in the minors, it’s almost appropriate here. What role do you see Murphy playing next year. Does he make the pro team as a bench guy? Compete for 2B position? Start in minors to heal/sharpen the skills at the 2B position?

Just curious to the masses thoughts…

1. saltygary

I think he’s going to have to start in the minors and prove that he can play at a higher level.

1. njstuckintx

Well, if they groom him for 2B spot, i can see that. I just wonder if they are going to push him that way or if they factor him to be the 1B / (2B, 3B, OF in an immergency) type guy and main PH off the bench. Murphs bat never was a question, just his ability to not be a butcher in the field.

1. ceetar

If he can not be a butcher in the field (and while i dont’ think he’d be a great 2B, i think he could be fine. he showed he’s more suited to infield) I think he’ll have a shot to win 2B from Castillo in Spring Training and winter ball. Unless a really talented 2Bman pops onto the market that the Mets can grab Murphy, Tejada and Castillo will probably compete for it, with other prospects possibly nipping around.

2. DNDJohan aka kistics

A bench player that will replace Carter?

1. njstuckintx

I like Murphy’s bat better than carters, so sure, why not.

14. DNDJohan aka kistics

Interesting fact. The Mets offense has the 3rd worst OBP (.316) and 4th worst OPS (.705) in the league. Only the Astros and Pirates have lower OBPs.

I guess that’s what happens when you have Frenchy and Barajas in your lineup.

1. GravediggerHebner

Given their playing time you’ve correctly singled out the 2 main offenders in Francoeur and Barajas.

What compounds the problem and makes playing guys like Francoeur and Barajas untenable is that guys like Cora & Tejada get/got too much playing time and guys like Castillo, Reyes & Bay are underperforming.

At least when Francoeur & Barajas don’t play superior offensive performers generally step in for them. When Castillo or Reyes don’t play the quality actually drops despite their underwhelming performance.
