Something always goes wrong with the Mets just when things are going well. I’m not sure what it is. I don’t know if it’s one thing over and over or different things each time. All I know is every time the Mets are on the cusp of a sustained run of success (by that I mean more than 2 consecutive years of post season berths with at least 1 WS Championship in there) something goes wrong. A foundation for a dynasty is seemingly laid but the dynasty itself is never built.
I wasn’t old enough to have a feel for the team in ’69 or ’73 so I can’t comment on that era.
In ’84 when the team was finally good after a futile decade it sure felt like the beginning of a nice long run of playoffs and this was pre-wildcard (for you youngins). But in ’85 they didn’t quite make it. In ’86 we all know what happened and thank God it did or we’d have nothing to cling to in a stormy sea. But they missed the playoffs in ’87 and were unceremoniously bounced from them in ’88 then slowly faded away.
In ’98 it seemed like the beginning of something good but then ’99 and ’00 were like a shooting star. If you blinked it was over.
Then in a surprisingly (to me) quick turnaround for this organization the team returned to the post season in ’06 and seemed yet again on the cusp of a sustained run of post season appearances and success but again something went wrong.
I don’t believe in curses. There has to be a tangible reason or reasons for this.
I guess in the ’80s it was a combination of overindulgence by some players and fear of it happening with other players causing them to be sent away weakening the roster.
At the turn of the century I guess it was a power struggle between the manager and general manager that the ownership couldn’t keep in check.
What is it now? My guess is it’s impotent ownership but I can’t prove it. All I know is I see all kinds of shenanigans and ineptitude in all aspects of the Major League level with no clear vision and no clear captain of the ship. Continuing the ship analogy let’s finish this off with an exchange between then New York Knick Micheal “Sugar” Ray Richardson and a reporter in regard to the fortunes of the Knicks:
- Reporter: “What do you think is happening to the team?”
- Richardson: “The ship be sinking.”
- Reporter: “How far can it sink?”
- Richardson: “Sky’s the limit.”
What do you think the problem is?

"It's not a knock, but they are some crafty people."

Well mike from nybd interviewed frank cashen and frank intimated that the whole dynamic of being a gm has changed – the gm used to be the c.o.o and banked everything from player development to tickets sales to pro
otions – the owners used to be very hands off – atleast Nelson was .

partly bad luck, and largely from a poorly designed and somewhat dysfunctional organizational structure.
and the only way to figure out if that is the reason, is to blow it up and bring in new blood.
but as noted, unless the owners decide to step back and take their hands off the controls, nothing material will change with the team, and how it is run.

Homeground talent mixed with maybe one or two big free agents and some role players that match the teams chemistry. And I also believe in a little bit of luck-not a lot but just a little when it comes down to injuries and players who play above their level. I also like to look at the teams that are successful in the Majors. Look at the PHillies, the Rays, the Yankees.

Companies and Countries run by a dictator are run more efficiently. That is a fact. Now, I will not get into the arguement concerning the direction of said efficiencies… Eliminate the number of cooks in the kitchen and what you want/how you want something cooked is more likely to happen. Also helps if that said cook in the kitchen actually went to culinary school instead of being the child of Bobby Flay or Cat Cora or BAMM Legassi. Just cause you have the lineage does not equate to ability. (See Tony Gwynn to Tony Gwynn JR as an example to that) Junior Wilpon will never be confused with a “mind for baseball”. Until that is corrected and his meddlesome hands with his silver stirring spoon are removed from Omar’s (or GM’s to come) cooking pot, I’m afraid the product is going to less than savory. Unless, of course, the miracle mets happen once again. And while I do believe in miracles, I don’t count on them occuring.

“Companies and Countries run by a dictator are run more efficiently.”
Wow, what an absolutely and utterly false thing to say.
Yeah, Uganda and Cuba and Syria and Iran are much more efficient than Scandinavia and Japan and Canada and Israel.
And from my experience as a business owner, the unionized UPS runs circles around the rightist, dictator-run FedEx.

As I said, i’m not going to argue what those efficiencies are. I didn’t say they are the best run. Problem with a dictator is you are placing all your bets on 1 person to do right. It is efficient because you don’t have to clear crap with committee after subcommittee after subcommittee.
And as for UPS/FED EX thing, that’s not completely correct. UPS is hamstrung by the unions in various ways. They also have their focuses in slightly different realms in regards to international/domestic cargoes. Again, I’m not going to ague minutia, as i’m talking of efficiencies, not intellegence of said people in power or the wisdom to put said intellegence into action.
Also, UPS and Fed Ex are merging. Going to be called Fed-UP.

Haha on the Fed-Up thing; that’s good.
But if we differ politically, we will never agree on this.
I see UPS as a company where the drivers make a very nice living.
And despite what people may think, UPS’ international service is outstanding. FedEx domestically is good, but in my experience nothing like UPS.
Unions have their flaws, but whether it is UPS, the auto companies in their heyday, the Teamsters, or today’s amazingly productive Las Vegas union workers, unions in the US have provided countless millions with a much, much better life than their nonunion counterparts.

I don’t think you can really put a blame on the ownership. The Mets have been one of the top spenders in the league. They have spent the money necessary to win and as a result ’06 team had the best record in baseball.
I think it’s a combination of couple things like bad contracts, lack of prospect development, etc. I think the finger pointing should be on Omar. I think he has not spent the money wisely and now that he’s tied up financially, there isn’t much that he can do but to make minor league moves and hope to get the ‘lightening in the bottle’ type of players. I mean look at the past off season signings. Outside of Bay, they’re all minor league deals for injured or washed up players hoping to find another Tatis/Valentin/Dickey.

First off, great job on correctly spelling Micheal, even though the Fleer card you show did not!
However, a picture of him as a Net would have really made the story even more perfect; maybe a shot of him leading the ONLY pre-Kidd Net NBA team to win a playoff series.
Nice work Grave, and I do agree—this team seems destined to NEVER have a sustained run of postseason appearances.
To me, it is 100% not having enough around The Core.
In 2006 they had Delgado, Valentin, LoDuca, Bradford, Oliver, Sanchez, Chavez, and Floyd.
Take one quick look at 2010′s corresponding players, and try to find a garbage pail to vomit in real quick. Yeah, I know Chris Carter is a great power hitter, blah blah blah. A team with Chris Carter and Mike Hessman is a 4th place team–unless it plays in AAA.
1986 is not a fair comparison, but the 5th starter/long man was Rick Aguilera. One of the last pen guys was Randy Myers. Two utility players were Kevin Mitchell and Howard Johnson.
The Core, despite Reyes’ subpar year and Beltran’s injuries, still is not the problem. It is the mystifyingly awful Bay, the unmystifyingly awful Francoeur, and other offensive black holes at C and 2B, as well as back of the rotation troubles, the maddening headcase Pelf, and the atrocious back end of the pen.
Can all of this be rectified sufficiently in a division with 2 very good teams, an always competitive Marlin team, and the sure-to-be-better-in-2011 Nats?
I don’t know. But for one, Niese better be a number 3 or at least 4 next year, and Ike better hit better than the good-fielding version of Mike Jacobs which he is right now.

For the most part I agree with you, but aren’t you being a little hard on Ike? He hasn’t even played 100 games yet in the bigs and he’s on a 162 game pace for 26HR and 92RBI on a weak-hitting team, and that includes his recent struggles.

I did say “right now” but still, Ike barely played above AA ball, and I do have high hopes for him, and he is a very good fielder, and he does have a tendency to get big hits late in games.

Here’s part of the interview
“When I was the general manager I was part of a dying breed,†Cashen said,†I was in charge of ticket sales, the field, radio, and television.†He describes essentially someone who owned a business and had to be accountable for everything from personnel to marketing of the brand. Lucky for Cashen he had the ownership that allowed that autonomy, as well as the ability to work in the old school print media era.
Things have changed so much that I wonder if Cashen would have been able to pull off the Gary Carter trade. He wanted another bat for his young club and thought Carter was the perfect fit. When approaching Montreal, team president and GM John McHale he told him “if anyone hears I am talking about trading Carter I am going to get thrown out of Canada.†Three weeks and twenty five conversations later Carter was a Met. Imagine in the era of MLB Trade Rumors and new media? Montreal fans would have probably heard about this and may have swayed an already skeptical McHale against trading his star. Without Carter, it’s conceivable the Mets never win a title. Even more ironic was how Mets ownership didn’t know about the Keith Hernandez/Neil Allen deal until it was consummated. Think the Mets would have easily taken on a “wild boy†like Mex today? I suspect a thorough background check would have been in play. It was so much easier to control information and each process when you had less people and technology involved. Remember, WFAN wasn’t even around early in Cashen’s tenure.
I wish that we had a gm as great cashen was
GravediggerHebner
8/3/2010-12:21pm at 12:21 pm (UTC -4)
Not to take anything away from the interview but Cashen told that story in the day-before-the-event press conference that SNY broadcast live as well I heard it then.
I agree that in this era of instant information and people willing to leak that information Carter being acquired seems much less likely.
Related to that I believe that many of these leaks are purposely done precisely to gain feedback on potential moves. I wasn’t paying close attention then but I wonder if there was public outcry against the Mets signing Yorvit Torrealba a couple years ago because it was such a “done deal” that never happened that he sued the team. To the best of my knowledge that is still unresolved.

On a lighter note Ed Coleman was just on the FAN and they were talking about what Jerry’s hints that some lineup changes were coming might mean. Basically all they could say with certainty was that it would mean less playing time for Jeff Francoeur.
But Coleman elaborated on what he thought should be done given the current roster and I thought it was worth noting.
He said roughly “keep Beltran and Wright where they are. Pagan has been great in the 2 spot but this team is having trouble driving in runs so I would move Pagan to 5th and Ike down to 6th.”
Joe & Evan interrupt him “so who’s batting 2nd Castillo?”
“Yes I know he’s bad but he’s better there than he is 8th.” (I agree with this) “If not Castillo 2nd you could bat Thole 2nd he makes enough contact and has a good enough eye to work in that spot. Cora could play 2nd and bat 8th better than Castillo in that spot.
So as best as I can tell he’s talking about something like:
Reyes
Thole
Beltran
Wright
Pagan
Davis
Feliciano/Carter
Cora
Pitcher
I don’t hate that.

I hear you that’s certainly not optimal. Given the team’s current place in the standings ideally I’d call up Turner or maybe Tejada (but I think he needs more MiLB seasoning) to play 2nd.
Failing that I would stick with Castillo over Cora since it matter little for this season and negatively impacts next season if you don’t, but if doing that I’m going to agree with Coleman and bat him 2nd, not 8th. He just doesn’t approach at bats in a way that’s conducive to him batting 8th. Walking (or getting called out on strikes) ahead of the pitcher only helps with 2 out none on in that it clears the pitcher spot for the following inning. If anyone is on base it’s just horrible.

Hitter, Hole, Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hole, Hitter, Hole.

Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hitter, Hole, Hole, Hole.
Those holes are Castillo, Frenchy and pitcher. Swapping out Thole with other Catcher options turns a hitter into another hole.

2nd base/catcher/Franceour are well below league average.
Ike has got typical rookie-itis.

If he is…or was…is the problem now his hands are being tied? Is there a problem with payroll? Has Omar suddenly become gun shy and can’t pull the trigger for worrying over a few mistakes he’s made in the past?
I really have no idea but I’ve got my suspicions. I do know that if they don’t clean house from top to bottom in the off season I’m going to have way less optimism that 2011 won’t be any different than 2010.

And we’ll be sold on a healthy Beltran,Ike and Thole a year older

Still, as the New York Mets slipped to .500 on Monday night and dropped 7½ games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves, it seems to be nearing a foregone conclusion that the Mets will have a new manager in 2011. +1
I thought the very same thing as soon as I heard those words coming out of his mouth. I guess this is what we have to look forward to all off season….

“Wright and Reyes have been here a long time now and the team has won nothing. It’s time to at least examine everything.”

Won nothing huh? 2006 was a fantastic season and the team was 1 game away from making the World Series.

MF: ‘The idea that either Reyes or Wright is untouchable is ludicrous. The team has won nothing with them. Except fail in ’06, choke in ’07, gag it in ’08.
He goes on to say that absolutely no one in the team should be untouchable. It’s time to start over.
The day MF announces his retirement is the day I’ll rejoice.

I’m sure his chair will as well. The local deli and diet coke sales people will weep for days.

Francesa is a Yankee fan. To them not winning the World Series = winning nothing. Even if you are in it and lose it in 7 games.

MF goes on to say that Omar as a GM is an aggressive GM and there is no question he’s brought some trades to ownership that they’ve shot down b/c of financial reasons. ‘Unquestionably’ was his quote.

MF and Omar are also in cahoots. The whole Jason Bay revealing showed that without a doubt!
While MF may have a point that the Wilpons are in more control of Omar than they let on, that doesn’t excuse him from how the team performs. I also feel that I can’t blame Ollie or Castillo on the Wilpons – those terrible signings had to have been more Omar than Wilpon.

Completely agree with you on who to blame for signing Ollie & Castillo but I will blame the Wilpons for giving a 4 year contract extension to Omar in Sept. 24, 2008 (after he gave Castillo that contract) and when the Mets were 1.5 games out with 5 games to go (finished 3 games out) a year after “the collapse.”
I admit a lot of my thinking is based on hindsight but it seems clear to me now that Omar was rewarded in Sept. 2008 for doing precisely what the Wilpons wanted him to do – give them meaningful games in September. I can’t help but note the irony that since then he has failed to deliver them even that.

The problem with Met fans is their loyalty, especially to Wright and Reyes.
‘They’ve been rotten big time players. They have no team glory.
Your team has done nothing but lose. I’m not saying to give them away but the way the team has performed, gagged it up in ’07, gagged it up in ’08, stunk the house up in ’09 and is fading fast in ’10…no one should be untouchable’.
Glory…is that all we need is glory? Ah…all this time I thought it was heart and grit.
What I wouldn’t give to see the Yankees tank going down the stretch and miss the playoffs. I’d tune into MF’s show every afternoon just to hear him have to ‘discuss’ that.
Go Rays! Go Boston! Go Twins!
