Post Game: Ex Post Facto

I was where doing what for whom?

I was where doing what for whom?

In the top of the 9th inning at Turner Field ex-Met and current Atlanta Braves closer Billy Wagner (5-2) took the mound in a 2-2 game.  The first batter to face him would be ex-Brave Jeff Francoeur.  In a shock that registered lightly on The Richter Scale Francoeur swung at the first pitch.  He fouled it off.  Francoeur’s subsequent home run over the right field fence made a more significant impression on The Richter Scale.  The bittersweet reactions of Mets and Braves fans were palpable.  Francoeur, a player many fans of both teams love to hate or hate to love, had given the Mets a 3-2 lead.  Mets closer ex-Angel Francisco Rodriguez then threw a 1-2-3 9th for his 23rd save.

Don't worry about it.

Don't worry about it.

Previously the Braves and Mets had traded single runs to get to the 9th tied.  In the bottom of the 2nd ex-Blue Jay Alex Gonzalez scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by ex-Yankee Melky Cabrera to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead.  The Mets answered in the top of the 3rd when a Jose Reyes RBI double plated ex-Twin Luis Castillo.  Then in the bottom of the 6th Cabrera tripled to drive in ex-Royal Rick Ankiel making it 2-1 Braves.  The Mets answered that run in the top of the 7th when pinch-hitter ex-Red Sox Chris Carter, batting for starter ex-Mariner R.A. Dickey, singled to drive in Francoeur who had reached base on a rare 4-pitch walk, well not so rare when you consider it was issued by ex-Brave Kyle Farnsworth.  The game stayed tied until Francoeur’s 9th inning blast made a winner of ex-Brave Manny Acosta (2-1) who’d thrown 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief bailing out Pedro Feliciano who had put 2 runners on in the 7th.  Final score New York 3, Atlanta 2.

    FINALLY!

Offense still not showing up for the most part but luckily tonight, neither did the Braves. Much of that had to do with RA on the mound..

The most unlikely of heroes – Franceour. Did anyone have a thought one in their head he would get a HR there?

KRod dialing it up in the 9th. Not sure when the last time was I saw him throwing 93 and 94 MPH fbs for strikes.

At least we won’t get swept…

Tomorrow we win back to back games for the first time in over a month. I gaurantee it.

Big Pelf is going to have a good start and the offense will score a couple runs.

    1. metsfan4decades

What’s this? TK predicting a positive outcome?
      Now THAT’S what I’m talking about…..

      1. tkfj2

Finally figured that it beats being sour all the time, now I plan to nauseate everyone with positivity.

First I have to follow through on the positivity.

        1. trs86

TK you should try that on FromwhatIcangather.com

It will still get you the attention you want but make you a happier person at the same time.

Not saying I don’t want you here but that positivity thing would go over like a flaming bag of poo there.

          1. tkfj2

I can’t read King Ellipses writing much, and even I have more sense than those folks.

Are you making text versions of a TIE Fighter?

        2. GravediggerHebner

I think it was Citi Field concert-giver Billy Joel who sang:

“Don’t go changing to try and please me, you’ve never let me down before mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm”

Good advice, especially the “mmm mmm” part.

    2. trs86

      I have changed TK….
OH happy day…. OH happy day….

    3. Kingman 26

      Now THIS is something!!

Who has tied him up and hacked into his TRDMB account??

And Publishers Clearing House will knock on my door and announce that I have just won one million dollars. I guarantee it. LOL

Nice Victory all the way around tonight!…Poetic that Frenchy hits
the dinger off Wagner in Atlanta
    AFTER The Phils already Won,in
a game Atlanta really could have used.
    Typical Billy Wags….And Bravo for
Frenchy. Unfortunately for us, it doesn’t change much. May have been
A HUGE Win if we only did to The D-Backs what everyone else has done to them all year.
Ya really gotta like Frenchy’s attitude and what that brings to a
    team, unfortunately he’s not good
enough at the Plate over the long haul
to play every day for a contending team.
B/T/W..Has there been a Kelvim Escobar
    sighting yet????….Just wondering…

    1. trs86

Escobar is done for the year. Gambled and lost. It happens. Sometimes you gamble and win sometimes you lose. Escobar lose, Acosta win.

As for Frenchy, I have no problem with him as a 4th OF. It’s just is he ready for that role. I would expect not.

      1. fongy2

But wait!…I thought we…Or at least many of you were sold on Escobar being the answer to the question
“Whos our 8th inning guy?”….gamble and lost??..More like Omar bidding against himself to guarantee
        1.25 Million to “One of
        HIS guys”….Who else
was gonna offer him anything else but a Minor League deal for the min???
        Oh, and where’s Ryoto??

        1. trs86

Well considering that most scouts, reporters and even negative mets sites said it was a good gamble and it only cost 1.25…

          1. fongy2

            Apparently every penny
            counts when it
            comes to spending for Mr.Wilpon!….
And if other scouts thought this guy was remotely close to being healthy…Why no other offers??

          2. trs86

Because Omar is an idiot and bid 1.25M against himself. OR….
“Blavia said (via Twitter) that Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee had also made Escobar offers.”

          3. trs86

            http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/mets-offer-minor-league-deal-to-kelvim-escobar.html

More from when he was being scouted by multiple teams and when the Mets offered a MILB deal. Had to go to MLB deal because other teams offered. Omar used big market status and connections to outbid them at a whopping 1.25M.

          4. trs86

Rays actually offered more total including incentives but only 600K base. Omar thought it was a good risk so he out bid them. It backfired.

  4. Mr North Jersey

Well the Mets win final score 3-2.

It was a fine performance again by Dickey.

It was nice to see Frenchy go deep in ATLANATA of all places.

Now the hard part trying to win God Forbid 2 in a row.

Don’t have any real expectations anymore at making a real run at the playoffs.

They have to go 31-24 just to win 85 games and that may not be enough to get them in anyways.

Please don’t take this to mean that anyone that believes they can do it should stop. If you are an optimist and believe I applaud you and hope the Mets prove you right. This is just my opinion.

Please no analogies. I don’t think I can handle another one after the one I already heard.

    Nite everyone.

    Go Mets.

    1. trs86

I think the Mets would have to go into September being at least 8-10 games over .500 to have a shot.

      1. oleosmirf

with a shortened bullpen, a poor tactician as the manager and a GM who struggles with making in season roster moves and their continued uninspiring and inconsistent play I would be quite shocked if the Mets managed to pull that off…

    2. GravediggerHebner

The universe is like a safe to which there is a combination. But the combination is locked up in the safe.

Oh crap you said NO analogies, sorry.

  5. GravediggerHebner

Largely unrelated but DAMMIT I love these commercials with Mr. Met in them. The only one that doesn’t give me a wide smile every time I see it is the one with the silver mime. I can take or leave that one. But the nail polish, the office meeting, the ID check and now this one with the bad handwriting and big head remark – good stuff.

    1. metsfan4decades

oh yeah, love those Mr. Met commercials.

      1. Kingman 26

        Me too.

Remember the old ESPN commercial with Mr Met and maybe Karl Ravech having lunch in the ESPN cafeteria, and Ravech sheepishly asks Mr Met if he has heard the rumors about Mrs Met and Charley Steiner? That was great.

  6. metsfan4decades

You just have to love RA.

Asked him about the wet mound and difficulty with it. His response:

Man, it was straight gorilla warfare out there tonight.
Used every trick in the book I had to get it done.
It’s hard enough throwing a knuckle ball. Didn’t need any help there keeping it under control.

It was a good win, nice win for us. Feels good.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Someone just tweeted that they want R.A. to read them bedtime stories.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Ha!

I think it was Gary (or was it Ronnie) in the booth the other night when RA was pitching last that was commenting about RA and how he likes to read to his kids all the time….

  8. dirtysanchez

There is no way why dickey should not be in the starting rotation next year…this guy gives you everything you can ask for.

I know I was not expecting jeff to pull that off. Hope this is the begining of a hot streak from him along the lines of his torrid streak in may because Jason Bay isnt really close to coming back yet.

Its all on the line tomorrow…big pelf needs to come up huge for us.

    1. ceetar

What was the “news” on Bay last night? I hate post games anyway and my head hurt and I didn’t want to risk hearing Manuel speak gibberish.

I thought he was still having some headaches over the weekend. A 2-week hot streak from Frenchy would definitely go a good way. he’s got hits in back to back games and a home run and a walk too! I’m just hoping that’s not the extent of it.

      1. dirtysanchez

lol…yea in jeffs case a walk is almost as equally impressive as a home run lol

From what I heard on the radio call of the game, bay was still having “headaches” although he claims he is feeling a bit better. Who knows when he will be 100% again…its a bruise to your brain lol…tough call when he will be back.

    2. njstuckintx

      1. I’m not expecting anything from Pelf. He’s fallen off the ledge.
      2. Resign Dickey ASAP. Do not wait for the offseason. Approach him now. What is too much/too little? He’s what, 34? 36? You guys think a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd? 6 mill, 2 year deal(2.5/3.5) with a 4.5 mill option, 500K buy out? Or something comparable. His age doesn’t worry me much as he’s a knuckle puncher, but I don’t want to go buck cherry here. 2 years to me would get it done.
      3. I wouldn’t rush Bay back at all. sit him another 1-2 weeks. You baby a brain bruise, especially when it has another 45 mill or so due to it.
      4. Toronto is 11.5 games out and is 4 games better than the Mets (record wise), so the situation could certainly be a lot worse than it is. 7 games is not unsurmountable, they just have to start stringing some together. I hope Pelf proves me wrong, as a Pelf start does not make me feel as calm, cool and collected as it did early this season.

      1. dirtysanchez

toronto plays in the al east…a better record than the mets doesnt say much lol

Agreed on the R.A. Dickey resign. Do I expect him to do what he did this year going forward into next season, of course not but I like the different look he gives the rotation and pitchers can learn alot from dickeys poise when hes in trouble(looking at you pelf)

Agreed on Bay…i hope he gets the david wright treatment and not the ryan church treatment

I think pelf will come through…at least if you tell yourself that enough times, you start believing it lol

        1. njstuckintx

“at least if you tell yourself that enough times, you start believing it”
