Fred Wilpon Says Minaya Will Be Back In 2011

In an article written by NY Post columnist Mike Puma he asks Mets owner Fred Wilpon if Omar Minaya will be back next year to which Fred Wilpon replied,

“Is the sun going to come up tomorrow?”

I guess if you want to see Minaya gone you better hope for one hell of a Solar Eclipse for tomorrow.

I guess he had Annie in his IPOD.

Hopefully Omar will be back… in another capacity. But the extension provided to Omar basically seals his deal with the Mets. 1 more year as the make/break year, with a new coaching staff and manager, ideally.

I believe this may in fact be exactly what will happen but even if it isn’t these words are precisely what he has to say at this juncture. As the always entertaining CoreyNYC just tweeted “what is he supposed to say: ‘I’m going to fire him October 8th?’”

    1. Mr North Jersey

Firing him in Oct now there’s a thought. :-D

I think the buzz is more that he commented at all.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Ah that’s what that is. I thought it was tinnitus. Phew.

        1. Mr North Jersey

LoL I had to Google what in the world tinnitus meant.

Tinnitus (pronounced /tɪˈnaɪtÉ™s/ or /ˈtɪnɪtÉ™s/,[1] from the Latin word tinnÄ«tus meaning “ringing”[2]) is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound.

Needless to say I am glad it is not something that requires a shot or is contagious.

          1. ceetar

I always just assumed that was me haering the blood rushing through my veins or something. guses that wouldn’t really make a noise.

          2. njstuckintx

You can always take the pill “quietus” for Tinnitus relief.

          3. njstuckintx

And I’ve always wanted to try it to see if it would give me some relief for the multiple Queens of the Stone Age / Built to Spill / Clutch / Radiohead shows I’ve been to. If anyone tries it, let a brother know!

          4. GravediggerHebner

I’m jealous that you’ve seen a couple of those bands.

I haven’t been to a loud show in many years but the ones I did attend have done their damage. Sometimes I think my fan is on and reach to turn it off only to find that it isn’t on. Oh well, the ROCK! was well worth the ever present WHOOOSH! in my head.

          5. njstuckintx

The ROCK was definitely worth it. I don’t get the whoosh, more a higher pitched constant tone, similar to the sound that comes when the they do those service announcements on teh TV or radio. This is only a test… Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

          6. GravediggerHebner

Wow I’m glad I don’t have that I think I would find that disturbing.

Whatever my thing is it’s unnoticed during the day due to ambient sound from the world but at night when things are quieter it’s noticeable. I will think that someone is vacuuming far away or something like that.

I put primary responsibility on Sugar at The Orpheum in Boston (Bob Mould definitely turned it up to 11) but I went to far too many shows before I figured out it was both useful and not uncool to put some protection in your ears.

          7. gategem

I’ve lived with tinnitus and diminishing hearing for many years. It dates back to my youth when I listened to rock, big band and classical music too damn loud. I was somewhat of an audiophile back then and I helped some friends set up the electronics for their bands. Those of you that have it just know that it gets worse with age.

          8. GravediggerHebner

I don’t give a hoot about the Mets I just enjoy increasing the lexicon of others.

Tinnitus is bad but is not nearly as bad as Tintinitus which is the headache brought on by trying to figure out which guy in the black bowler hat carrying the cane is which while reading The Adventures of Tintin.

          9. Mr North Jersey

You know they are making a movie about TinTin?
            http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0983193/

You are the only person I know to ever reference TinTin.

          10. GravediggerHebner

I had forgotten that. Great cast. Guy who played Gollum as the Captain and guy who played the best friend/zombie in Shaun of the Dead as my bowler hat character. I’ll see that. Thanks for reminding me.

    M*%&@!# FU@#$^$#!! Piece of S@#% BullS@!#$ F#@$ I hate you!!

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Nice….

      ;-)

  5. ceetar

I don’t take anything from this comment. for one he’s not going to say anything now.

for two i don’t really just want blood. if Omar’s going to get the job done next year (or this one), then fine. I don’t feel comfortable analyzing him, without knowing all the facts about who’s pulling strings, what he’s tried to do and not gotten clearance for, or was talked out of.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Cmon just think of Omar the way you do of Jerry and run with it.

      You will have fun.

      1. ceetar

I dno’t want to jump on the hate bandwagon. too much of that. makes me too sad to think of people seriously talking about trading Reyes, and me not having baseball to be excited about next year.

I feel comfortable analyzing Manuel’s decisions and justifying that he is a disaster. Minaya’s had some bad moves, but i’m not 100% sure how much of what was him, and I can also see where he was coming from at the time. The only real bad existing contract right now is Ollie’s, and I wouldn’t feel that way if he was the pitcher he was when we signed him.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Your no fun. :-(

          1. ceetar

did you read my own post earlier? I posted a bunch of inspirational quotes. Rah rah rah!

          2. Mr North Jersey

            :-)

LoL I just read it Ceetar. My favorite is this one.

“How achievest thou something meaningful in thy life when thou art very deeply wedded to thy ugly and miserable past?”

            It’s almost religious. :-D

          3. gategem

It’s obvious Ceetar is still single. LOL

    2. koose

The more this insanity goes on the more it sounds like Omar really has no say.I think omars in living hell like the rest of us.we must all realize we are the fans of a team with deep financial problems that won’t be going away for a long time.Fred wilpon needs to reacess what the teams direction will be whether or not to sell, take an more partners or keep a sinking financial ship and be stupid.

    3. metsfan4decades

‘If Omar’s going to get the job done next year’…being the operative phrase.

I won’t pretend to know everything that goes on with the FO/NY Mets either. I know MF (and I can’t believe I’m going to quote him here) feels Omar absolutely took trades to ownership they shot down. So there may very well be something to your supposition of not knowing who all is exactly at fault here for the current roster construction (if that’s what you were implying).

  6. GravediggerHebner

There is really no other way that Mr. Wilpon could have responded to this question.

Had he made no comment he would have opened Pandora’s box of speculation regarding Omar’s job.

Had he said something along the lines of “everyone is always subject to year end review yada yada” then the next question as he was getting into his bullet proof limo would have been “so you’re saying Omar might not be back next season?”

The way I see it he gave the best answer to stem a tide of “Is Omar coming back?” “When will Omar be let go?” and such stories.

Now instead there are “WTF?” stories which is fine because they take the focus of his employee which at least in theory allows his employee to better do his job. I have no problem with this answer even if it was a bold faced lie.

    1. Mr North Jersey

So your saying Wilpon did the right thing for a change?

      1. metsfan4decades

LOL…I see it as Wilpon taking the easiest way out to a question everyone knew going in he wasn’t going to answer.

I would have laughed harder though if his answer was:
‘Does a bear shyt in the woods?’?

        1. Mr North Jersey

          hahahaha

    2. ceetar

which is why it was a poor question, especially as this was an SNY-Connecticut thingy, and nothing to do with the Mets. Keep on topic. You don’t see people asking Torre about the Mets job..(besides Francesa, and plenty ask Joe about the cubs job..but still. they shouldn’t)

      1. Mr North Jersey

When asked about Minaya’s status beyond this season, he said: “Is the sun going to come up?”

But when asked to elaborate, a flustered Wilpon said “I don’t know, I told you,” before drifting off mid-sentence to ask for directions on how to the leave press conference.

“This is about the Huskies,” Wilpon said. “This is about SNY and the Huskies this is not about the Mets right here so we have to get back home to talk about the Mets.”

  7. metsfan4decades

I couldn’t agree more with a comment Ceetar made above on trading Reyes.
I hope they do get the extension worked out sooner rather than later.

What’s even sadder is the angry Met fans wanting to trade Wright. I’m so damn tired of hearing the ‘non clutch’ argument when it comes to him. Last I checked he was second in the league in RBIs. What? He somehow managed to get the ‘big’ hit and get those RBIs when no one was on base – those 77 RBIs are all solo HRs? I don’t think so…

Isn’t it just plain baseball common sense that if you’re among the league leaders in RBIs you have come through more often than not?

‘Sell high’ doesn’t apply, IMO, when discussing Wright.

    1. youngvalerawest

      w/ RISP 295 .360 .518

      w/ men on .286 .352 .541

      high leverage .280 .333 .439

      late and close 212 .308 .258

So he’s been good and bad depending upon how you look at it but certainly, as you say, more good than bad.

      1. gategem

The problem is perception and “late and close” has the largest impact on the fans definition of “clutch.”

  8. tkfj2

    See you in 2012.

  9. stickguy

he said back, but did he specifically say in what capacity?
