The hotel room in Ron Darling's mind
New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese was removed after 112 pitches having thrown 7 innings of 1-run ball and with his team leading 2-1. Bobby Parnell (0-1) came on to face the Philadelphia Phillies and for the 2nd time in a week failed to record an out during an appearance. Last time Parnell gave up 3 hits, 1 walk, and 3 runs. Tonight he gave up 4 consecutive singles and all of the runners scored as part of a 6-run Phillie inning giving them a 7-2 lead. The Mets teased their fans in the 9th when pinch-hitter Mike Hessman slammed a 2-out opposite field 3-run homer to make the game appear closer than it really was but Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge came on and struck out pinch-hitter Jesus Feliciano looking to end it. The Mets are now below .500 for the first time since May 23rd. As Bobby Ojeda astutely noted in the post game show, the Mets approach at the plate was terrible – no Mets batter walked while 7 struck out. Final score Philadelphia 7, New York 5.

The true differences between these VERY different teams was when Ruiz and his .300 BA and .400 OBP were up with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs in a tie game, and DID NOT bunt.
Yes Met fans, it IS possible for a good player to get a hit and not waste a damn frigin out.

Bobby O on a roll on post game, as usual….
He was fired up about this team and it’s apparent defeatist attitude. Said the difference between the Phillie and Mets is the Mets come out hoping they’re gonna win and the Phillies know they’re going to.
Went off on a rant concerning Parnell…not that I can blame him but….8th inning, 1 run lead, you put the first 2 one with no out, he should have got the hook. I have absolutely no idea why he was left out there to hang.
At one point after Jerry spoke, Carlin says to Bobby O something like it’s obvious many of the players are pressing. Do you think Jerry is pressing?
Bobby O laughed right out loud, then paused still laughing and said ‘I don’t know that Jerry is pressing’…….
You know, I’m reversing my thoughts last week on replacing Jerry now as opposed till the end of the season. After listening to Bobby O tonight and to an extent Ronnie…going on about their so obvious lack of confidence, the body language, the not believing they can get the job done…I’m thinking it would be better to replace Jerry now.
Even if we’re out of it now..finishing up strong, going into the off season knowing they did that, has to help going into next season. As opposed to starting ’11 proving they have to turn around what was again a lousy, rotten season……

Anyone notice the chucking by Pagan and others in the dugout after the final out?

No, kingman. When I looked, all I saw was Reyes with that long face on he’s got when it’s not going well..walking towards the tunnel.
I was chatting in the Dugout, well ranting (LOL) and wasn’t really watching.

I looked up at the TV and saw the back of Pagan’s head it appeared he was speaking with/listening to Castillo then he turned around so I could see his face and he was doing something that I could best describe as being in the smiling/laughing family of facial expressions.
Since I have no context for it I can’t get too excited about it.

Post game talking about Tejada and FMart being scratched 10 minutes prior to the game but sitting in the dugout.
Omar was asked about it. His quote:
‘I’ve got nothing to say about that. We’ll see’.
So…speculating……trade in the works? Some getting released and these two called up?
Stay tuned….

This season can be blamed on a big factor IMO, and that is poor roster construction. With a 120+ million dollar payroll, one that I’m sure many small market teams GM’s would love to have, we are a 4th place team middling around the .500 mark. Before this season began CHONE projected us as a 75-80 win team, something that many hopeful fans including myself refused to believe. But as this season unfolded we can see why this projection may not be far off, THE NY METS ARE NOT A GOOD BASEBALL TEAM.
How? David Wright and Jose Reyes are all stars, Angel Pagan has been a great surprise, RA Dickey and Jon Niese as well. But that only goes so far, the supporting cast is simply not good enough. Jeff Francouer, ha, Luis Castillo, a shell of his former self, Carlos Beltran coming off injury. We began this season with Frank Catalanatto, Gary Matthews Jr., Fernando Nieve, Ryoto Igarashi, Mike Jacobs and Jennry Mejia on the 25 man roster. NONE of them are still with us and none of them proved capable of being a helpful addition to a winning baseball team. John Maine and Ollie Perez, 2 of the biggest question marks coming into the season have done nothing to help this team win, they have helped embarrass it however.
Many scoffed at the other SP options during the offseason, but I think it was a terrible mistake to not pick up another solid SP. Some here will scoff and say that those options were no better than MOP and hindsight is 20-20, but the fact is that many of those options would have brought more worth than Ollie and John Maine have been.
Recent comments in the media have me asking if the owners and GM of this team are delusional, usually this is where I can be construed as hyperbolic, but I can’t help but think this way. Omar Minaya telling us that we are a winning streak away from contending is a slap in the face to Mets fans. I know he isnt going to say that the Mets are a bunch of losers, but he could at least be realistic with us and tell us that the season hasnt turned out as planned. There is nothing wrong with being disappointed.
Lets face it, it is pretty unaccpetable to have a 100+ million dollar payroll and only have 1 PO appearance to show for it in 5 years. Jerry Manuel may be a terrible manager, but he has been given crap to work with. Poor roster construction ultimately falls on the Owners and GM, and I’m afraid I don’t see much changing.
The fish does indeed stink from the head down.

Other than the idea that most of the available starting pitchers we did not sign might have made a difference, I agree with pretty much all of this.
This team just is not good, and we have a serious problem with next year if the manager is the only change we see.
This is ugly, getting uglier by the day, and could be really disturbing next year, as Omar clearly is returning and there is VERY little hope of serious money being spent above the many, many big contracts we have.
The supporting cast is just terrible.
It might be 2012 before serious change occurs.

I think while many here hoped for the best many here also have also acknowledged the roster is poorly constructed. I don’t think that particular issue is surprising anyone.
All off season I was one of a number of people who declared that “everything would have to break right for the Mets and some things would have to go wrong for their competition” for them to be in the post season.
To hear Jerry Manuel say pretty much exactly the same thing recently didn’t make me feel any better about it but again the poor supporting cast is not a shocking development.

Hard to argue with any of your points, TK.
I wish that the buck stopped with Omar….thereby one of the fixes would be to replace him as GM. But I’m starting to be very much afraid it goes higher than Omar and blame is equally shared by Jeff Wilpon.
The comment from Omar today in response to Philly their spending, their revenues was the first public comment I’ve heard on a hint as to why moves were not made and payroll is down.
Maybe it’s Omar being Omar and just a dumb comment b/c hey….in order to ensure revenues go up to the level you’d like you have to FIRST field a winning team.
But….maybe this was Omar’s first comment trying to give a hint that either there is a money problem and/or his hands are being tied by ownership when it comes to spending money.
Or maybe I’m giving Omar way too much credit.

I know I’m the first to criticize Omar, and many times unfairly. At this point, anything is viable and for the most part all I want to know is the truth behind this entire situation, as I’m sure we all would. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.

Speaking as a Mets-Knicks-Giants fan today has been a rotten day.
Mets another rotten late loss.
Knicks bring back Isiah (although allegedly league is looking into conflict of interest since he’s still employed in FLA so I have slim hope there).
Giants player after player getting injured in camp. Starting O lineman in a cast.
Makes me wish I liked hockey although for all I know the Rangers did something awful today too.

well, that certainly sucked, didn’t it?
at least they only have to face halladay tomorrow.
After seeing the score in the middle of the 8th, I was discussing with my son which BP guy would blow it. Sadly, I picked Parnell and was right. He took K rod, so I guess never got a chance!
as to the F Mart/tejada moves, that (if it really is anything big) has to be a call up. hard to imagine a trade at this point, or those guys getting through waivers, but who the hell knows.
I would call turner up over tejada if that was the case. Hell, call them both up and ditch cora and slappy!
maybe they will DFA frenchy and Cora? Cora makes more sense, but again with the met FO, who the hell knows?
and dump jerry. Get it over with.

This from the Mets official Blog.
Note: Fernando Martinez and Ruben Tejada Scratched Tonight
By Michael Baron on Aug 06, 2010, 11:07 pm
According to Martino, both were late scratches from their game with Triple-A Buffalo, but were in the dugout during the Bisons 7-5 win over Columbus.
By the way, Ryota Igarashi earned the victory in that game, but Sean Green allowed three runs and five hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Way to Go guys.
