In a report for Newsday, David Lennon writes “The willingness to add dollars, when needed, is what allowed Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. to work out a deal…for Roy Oswalt.”

While Lennon says adding payroll isn’t the only reason for success, he notes that the Mets have trimmed their payroll by approximately $19 million from last season, whereas the Phillies have increased their payroll by $20 million over the same period.

Regarding the Phillies willingness to add payroll, Omar Minaya told Lennon:

“I think when you win like [the Phillies] have, there’s a little bit more certainty of their revenues…and I think that helps you be more aggressive in procurement of higher-end players.”

Well….in order to win Omar, you have to field a better than average competitive team. And I don’t think by REDUCING the payroll, you’re MORE likely than not to do that.

Someone should really, really not allow Omar to comment to the media…..

Fong–if you are still there, I did Willie Dixon research and have three excellent things to recommend!

Let me know if you are there, or email me at scdoug9@aol.com.

Just think where the Mets would be if it wasn’t for the unexpected emergence of Dickey and Niese.

    [OFF TOPIC]

Jerry played golf on off-day. “I shot like we played,” he said. Reporter: “Wow, that bad?” Manuel: “That’s cold.”

The Phillies currently have Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino on the DL, yet have won 12 of 14 games and are 60-48. Last year, the Mets finished 72-90 with the team having lost core players to injury. Yet Minaya suggested anyone drawing parallels is off-base.

“I don’t know if they’re exactly going through the same thing,” Minaya countered. “When you have [Roy] Halladay, when you have [Roy] Oswalt, when you have [Cole] Hamels, and when you have Howard for most of the year — when you have those kind of guys — I disagree with you. I don’t think they’re going exactly the same thing we went through last year.”

I agree that the Mets injuries last year compared to Phillies don’t come close but it is because we had more guys go down for longer periods of time at the same time than anything the Phillies have had to endure.

Not sure referencing Oswalt was the way to go since he was added to strengthen the Phillies when their pitchers got hurt and Minaya did nothing last year to add any help to the team.

i dont blame Omar for him staying put, however, there are other ways to improve this team internally. Playing Feliciano over Francouer, Thole over Barajas, Nieve over Acosta and releasing Perez are just a few…

      1. Mr North Jersey

I was referring to not adding anyone last year.

“Our hottest guy might be Castillo right now,” Manuel said. And he might be right.

Now I am really getting scared.

      Now THAT is sad….

  7. metsfan4decades

I’m so tired of hearing about what a ‘gritty’ team the Phillies are.

No matter how this season turns out, I’d like nothing more than to sweep them this weekend. Just because….

  8. oleosmirf

the thing is the Phillies have role players like Ruiz, Polanco, Fransisco who step it up when need be, our role players other than Barajas for 6 weeks have not…

    1. stickguy

they have also gotten some big, and game winning, hits out of guys like wilson valdez and Brian schnieds, both of whom we laughed at the phils for getting.

palanco also has a pretty big contract for a “role” player. I think I need a definition on that term!

is it anyone that is not an all-star/super-star, or somehow based on salary?
