Every Ghost Town needs a Boot Hill

Hey, at least it was a game.  I mean this was as tough a loss as it gets and I hate doing this because the Mets have some fight in them but with lack of support from Fred and Jeff and Omar and their inability to pick up an 8th inning guy, they sent the Mets into a gun fight with a pea shooter.   Just want to see out my thanks to Luis Castillo and Carlos Beltran for going a combined 0-6!  You guys have made such a difference coming off the DL.   What are you guys going to do for an Encore?  Give everyone in the clubhouse the Plague?

Personally, I would have given Jon Niese at least a baserunner before bringing in Bobby Parnell who did his best Araon Heilman impression.   Well, the good news is that if the Mets lose just one more game in Philly, the suspense will be out of August and September.

Finally, what’s a Ghost Town without a Boot Hill Cemetery?  I’m turning the Jackie Robinson Rotunda into Boot Hill.  If you look real close at the headstones you’ll see one for the 2007,2008,2009 and now 2010 season.  May you rest in peace.

But I got some great news for Fred and Jeff, in one week your going to sell out Citi Field for one last home-stand.  Yep, your going to sell every seat and make a ton of money off of concessions.   When the Phillies come to Citi, your going to see a lot of Red in the Stands.    Get ready to count your Money!!

I have a hard time understanding how the Wilpons, who obviously have been so successful in business to amass the fortunes they have, can be so incredibly short sighted when it’s come to decisions for their Sterling Mets corporation.

Just hire the best baseball mind available and let them do what they do best. Hopefully, that will equate to turning the perception of this franchise around and put a winning team out on the field.

And for the record…IMO Parnell should have been lifted after putting the first 2 men out without recording an out. If it was a post season game, any manager in his right mind would have done exactly that. Instead, Jerry leaves him out there to not only give up the tying run but the lead as well. Whether or not he’s got enough pieces in that BP or not is no excuse. Coming off an off day, he had plenty of arms to go to when it was apparent Parnell was not going to get the job done.

jerry prefers to make pitching changes only after his pitcher has been pitching well or if he can manage to create a l/r matchup that favors the opposition.

My wife being a life long Phillies
fan BUT not what I’d call a die-hard
fanatic didn’t know who Mike Sweeney
when they acquired him a couple days
ago. So, I explained what a tremendous
hitter he was a decade ago on some bad
Royals team and how his career has been ruined by a bad back.
Then I made the mistake of saying “But
    it’s a good pick-up and he’ll win a
gmae or two for you guys before the season’s done”…..Oops!!!….Sorry
    ’bout that fellow Met fans!….
I must say though, We again at least
    showed some fight….Problem is like
the old saying goes “We bring Knives
to a Gun fight”….In the end I still
give this Phil team ALOT of credit for
what they do and how they’ve done it.

You bring up an interesting point about allowing Niese a baserunner.

He’s 23 so being under 26 he qualifies for the “Verducci Effect” if you care to believe in it but he doesn’t fit the profile having thrown 178 in 2008 although you may have to factor in time lost to injury last year. But the way I would look at it is he should be capable of throwing 200 without extra worry.

    2007 – 134 innings
    2008 – 178 innings
    2009 – 119 innings
    2010 – 125 innings

So at that point it becomes a matter of how slavish you are to pitch counts. He had 111 last night. He’s thrown more than that 3 times with a high of 117. So unless you just don’t care about pitch counts you know he’s not finishing that 8th inning. Then you’re deciding whether to bring in a reliever in the middle of an inning versus bringing one in to start it.

Niese was pretty much cruising. He had walked too many but his previous inning had not been stressful (16 pitches, 1 walk). I think given that he was cruising and given the real or alleged lack of an “8th inning guy” I would have left him in to start the 8th and hope he got through it in 10-12 pitches which would’ve set a new season high of pitches for Niese but would only be in the low 120′s and would allow the starter to hand the ball to the closer (assuming it didn’t all fall apart for Niese in the 8th).

At the time when I heard the pitch count I just assumed Manuel would lift him but I hoped based on how well he was doing they would stretch him.
