"It's like this and like that and like this and uh"
New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey (7-5) did not have his best knuckleball today. But before his teammates had the opportunity to learn that they staked him to a 2-0 lead. Jose Reyes led off the game against Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay (14-8) with a double and scored on a single by Angel Pagan. 2 outs later Pagan scored on a single by Ike Davis that knocked Halladay’s glove off and the Mets had that 2-0 lead. Dickey struggled with his knuckler from the get-go but managed to retire the first 4 Phillies in order before Jayson Werth hit a fly ball to deep center field. Carlos Beltran drifted back to the left then back to the right then smashed into the padded center field wall as Werth’s batted ball flew over it for a solo homer cutting the Mets lead to 2-1.

"Gimme the microphone first so I can bust like a bubble"
With 1 out in the 3rd inning Dickey allowed a double to Jimmy Rollins then induced Placido Polanco to hit a grounder to shortstop. But Reyes couldn’t field it and was charged with an error which seemed to unnerve the already underwhelming Dickey. Next batter Ross Gload then hit an RBI single to tie the game. The next batter, Raul Ibanez, hit a 3-run homer and the batter after that, Werth, doubled. 1 out later Brian Schneider singled to drive in Werth, Dickey had fallen from his tightrope, and the Phillies had a 6-2 lead.

"But, uh, back to the lecture at hand"
In the 6th inning the Mets duplicated part of their 1st inning. Reyes led off with a double and Pagan singled him home making the score 6-3. Then in the 7th inning 4 of the first 5 Mets batters reached base off of Halladay. Fernando Martinez singled. Josh Thole doubled. Ruben Tejada grounded out driving in Martinez and moving Thole to 3rd base. Pinch-hitter Chris Carter doubled to center driving home Thole making it 6-5. Reyes walked putting the go-ahead run on base. But Pagan flied out and Beltran struck out to end the Mets threat. Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge sent the last 6 Mets down in order to preserve the win for Halladay. Final score Philadelphia 6, New York 5.

What do I take from today?
Watching Thole get 3 hits
Watching Davis get an rbi
Watching Carter hit a ph rbi double (Thinkin of you Kingy)
Watching Taka pitch 2 innings of shutout ball from the pen.
These are the things I am left with to enjoy.

2011?
I don’t think I have the same enthusiasm right now at 2011 as you seem to have without seeing what this organization will actually do.

Actually, my enthusiasm for 2011 has waned tremendously.
I just meant above that there sure as hell is not any more hope for 2010!
I think a managerial change must happen now, as my story tomorrow morning will argue for, and if a new guy cannot coax more out of what we have, then this franchise is in serious, serious trouble.
With the reduced payroll and no deadline trade action with so many guys available, we clearly are not going to see another Beltran/Pedro/Johan/KRod/Bay next year—not until 2012 when Ollie/Slappy/Beltran come off the books.

I’m waiting to hear on post game what RA has to say about this rough start. Because Jerry certainly didn’t say anything I could understand…..
Nice to see the kids with the effort and not laying down when Phils had 6 runs.
On the other hand, is really hard to watch Beltran struggle both at the plate and in the field.
Speaking of problems in the field…..Bobby O talking at length on post game about the poor field play and mental mistakes. You almost got the feeling he was biting his tongue on wanting to say something is going on behind the scenes. He did say many changes this week with the releasing of vets, benching of vets, etc. and I hot the impression he was trying to say the team is completely disjointed right now. If it is, doesn’t that go back to the manager?

probably the best 3 we can put out there, well no, Feliciano, Pagan, F-Mart is probably the one that yields us the most wins…

It’s over for Jerry and everyone knows it.
Watch TRDMB tomorrow morning for an idea for change and some support for it.

Listened to Beltran’s interview that included that one statement.
He said the ball just kept drifting and he didn’t know how close he was to the fence. Said if he did, he would have caught the ball. Said it wouldn’t have been a problem if he had got back to that fence first but that’s not the way it played out.
Bobby O’s comment on that: The ball was crushed 410 feet. That would have been a fantastic catch, had he been able to make that. There’s no failure in Beltran not getting to that one.

Dickey said:
I felt like I pitched poorly. Nothing more much to say.
The knuckle ball wasn’t very crisp. Didn’t have the finish it normally does, no extra wiggle it usually has.
Even though I had D stuff today, if that Werth ball didn’t carry, if some of those other balls hit just were a couple of inches either way, the damage wouldn’t have been as bad. But I felt like I could have pitched better.
When asked if he could pitch early next week, maybe Tues or Wed if needed. He said:
Oh yeah, that would be no problem. Especially with such a small pitch count. I could throw tomorrow, as a matter of fact.

Everyone likes Chris Carter, but Jerry said he pulled Beltran because he wanted Carter to get another AB. “Wally, this is your new office.”

If I was Beltran I’d relax. The season is over just treat this like Spring Training for 2011.

I am glad I did not get home until the 4th inning today (was planning to go to the game, but too much to do just back from vacation, and no tickets available from the phillies, and stub hub was yucky).
my BIL did have tickets front row behind the Met dugout. at least he got some action!
typical mets though. Get 5 off Halladay, and still maange to lose, even with the pen being perfect. of all days to have a bad SP outing!
so, give Dickey a negative game ball, but still, if the “heart” of the order wasn’t putrid, could have been much differetn.
This was certainly a game where the supporting cast was fine, it was the big guns 9well, 2 of 3 if you count Reyes as one too) spit the bit (after gagging up on it).
I have a bad, bad feeling we are never going to see anything more than a shell of Beltran again. Then he will get hurt!
and the Philly paper today even noted that the Francouer HR yesterday was an “only at CBP” HR.

for Knog: whatever reason you have for replacing Jerry tomorrow, I fully support it. Although my “he is a jidiot” works just fine too! He has to be gone. unless (hell, even if) they put on a miracle finish. And the Mets know it, so get rid of him now, before he plays tatis over evans again.

Well, I’m in Beantown this weekend and just thought I’d log on to report the interview with the Pawtaukett Sox new 1B I saw. Some guy named Delgado spewing about the opportunity to join an organization with such a rich deep tradition while grinning ear to ear. Speaking about how he looks forward to being able to help wherever he can in a few weeks. A few weeks? Wouldn’t that be Sept? Nice to know teams that are 6 out with a competent Manager still are planning for meaningful games in September instead of having a 2 month death march since our Manager’s mailing it in at this point. Actually, maybe we’d be doing better if he was mailing it in then he wouldn’t be at the controls. In any event, I really can’t begrudge Delgado catching on at this stage if he’s got something in the tank to try to get a ring or at least be part of a run. It’s just amazing the difference how 1 week into August and 6 out and the Sox have hope while we were just 6.5 out in Atlanta and now it’s pretty much over.

So Hazmet you are saying you would NOT be ripping Omar for signing the pitching equivalent of Delgado while 6 games out and making no other significant moves? That’s basically what the prize Redsox have done.

Not really a fan of klapisch. Jose thole? I wonder if Bobby v is the answer to replace the manager of the year. Hope my friend kingman has the answer, though i’d be all for a American idol/all-star voting search for the next mets
coach.
