Post Game: The Return of the Big Pelfrey

New York Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey (11-6) started this season finally living up to the moniker “Big Pelf.”  Through June 25th Pelfrey was 10-2 with a 2.71 ERA.  Then he morphed into “Lil’ Pelf.”  From June 30th through his last start August 4th Pelfrey was 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA.  But tonight he threw a career high 122 pitches over 7 shutout innings striking out 4 while allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.  Then in the bottom of the 7th Mets reserve outfielder Chris Carter led off by taking a 4-pitch walk from Cy Young-candidate Ubaldo Jimenez (17-3) the Colorado Rockies starter.  Perhaps due to an earlier interesting slide by Carter on a failed hit-and-run play Jerry Manuel sent in Jeff Francoeur to pinch-run for Carter.  Josh Thole then doubled to deep right moving Francoeur to 3rd base.  After Ruben Tejada struck out pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran was intentionally walked to load the bases.  The next batter, Jose Reyes, hit a fly ball to deep right for a sacrifice fly that ultimately made Pelfrey a winner for the 1st time since June 25th.  Newly minted “8th inning guy” Hisanori Takahashi and closer Francisco Rodriguez sent the last six batters down in order to finish off the game with Rodriguez recording his 25th save.  Final score New York 1, Colorado 0.  The shutout victory was the Mets 16th of the season which leads MLB.

runs would certainly be nice, but right now, and win in a storm!

    1. njstuckintx

The Giant create more offense than the Mets. yikes.

  2. Mr North Jersey

What do I take from this game?

Pelfrey pitching great fightin to finish to show his early success was no fluke.

KRod pitching a 1-2-3 inning more than getting the save.

Carter getting a hit (How ya doin there Kingy?) LoL

Mets gettin to .500? sure why not though gettin the 1st pick in the draft would not be so bad.

    I kid I kid I kid.

Hey my friend I root for him every AB!!

Would LOVE to be as wrong about him as I was about Dickey!

The Animal has indeed been fairly animalistic lately…which I am pretty sure is a good thing.

Pelf and KRod looked great, on pace for an amazing 23 team shutouts…hope for 2011 is up tonight.

      1. Mr North Jersey

You know I am only messing with you though right Kingy? Its all in good fun.

        1. Kingman 26

Of course I know, it most definitely IS in good fun and please don’t stop.

And may The Animal continue producing.

What is this; a remake of The Boys in the Band?

  3. metsfan4decades

LOL….love the Pink Panther. Dang…now I’ll have that theme song running through my mind.

Honestly, I wrote this off as a loss going in, between Jimenez and our line-up.
And THIS is why I watch all games.

Our offense still non existent but it was Jimenez and the junior core.

Props to Big Pelf. Was very happy to see this turn around tonight. Bobby O quite impressed with him as well.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Seems like when we shut the other team out we win.

I hit up a brazilian restraurant this afternoon so was out of the loop. just making sure all are in the know. And yeah, no big surprise on that one.

I love Brazilian food and I love the country. Brazil has the best looking girls wearing the smallest bikinis in the world. But I don’t understand Portuguese.

  6. Mr North Jersey

Great job by Krod and Big Pelf! Another 1-0 win beating Jimenez. Mets lead majors with 16 shutout wins. So they got that going for em.

It’s official…so said Jerry on post game show. Taka not pitching Saturday. In fact if the opportunity affords itself tomorrow again, he’ll be back out there for the 8th.

So…who is called up to pitch Saturday’s game and who goes down?

And for those of you telling me it’ll be Ollie pitching Saturday, please don’t ruin my good feeling off this win tonight…..

    1. Mr North Jersey

lol to take a line from a Disney movie, “Please don’t ruin 4D’s Groove.”

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL..
If Ollie pitches on Saturday they should raise a white flag under the American flag…..

        1. njstuckintx

          Please don’t joke like that.

haha, was more, please don’t joke about ollie coming back. i didn’t want nightmares.

          3. metsfan4decades

hahaha – I hear ya on that.

          4. Kingman 26

HAHA! I totally took that the same way that MF4D did!

        2. oleosmirf

lol luckily Misch’s early departure pretty much assures us he will be called up.

    2. trs86

I have a post going up at 11:00 about that. I was thinking the same thing.

It’s either Misch and someone is going down or it’s Perez.

Misch was pulled after only 5 innings tonight and Rubin speculated that is why.

  8. Mr North Jersey

did i hear jerry say taka won’t start saturday?

  9. Mr North Jersey

Left-hander Pat Misch was pulled after tossing five scoreless innings from Triple-A Buffalo’s game at Lehigh Valley, the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate. Misch had only thrown 55 pitches, signaling he could be brought back on short rest and make his 2010 Mets debut on Saturday. That would allow the Mets to keep Hisanori Takahashi in the bullpen.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/8266/misch-promotion-looming?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

    1. oleosmirf

yup seems like his long overdue 2010 Mets debut is upon us. Of course Ollie SHOULD be released but i’m fine with them sending down Valdes.

hopefully when rosters expand, De la Torre and O’Conner can be called up and see what they can do in the big leagues.

      1. Mr North Jersey

So what are the odds Ollie goes in this Friday complaining of pain in the shoulder so the Mets can dl him?

        1. metsfan4decades

          Works for me.

        2. oleosmirf

zero. its gonna be Valdes, another long overdue move.

          1. Mr North Jersey

            Valdes, Valdes… nope doesn’t register.

            ;-)

  10. Mr North Jersey

It’s a shame in retrospect that the Mets didn’t make some of these moves when it still may have mattered like maybe back on July 26 just before the home stand. Who am i kidding though it probably wouldn’t of made a difference.

    Hindsight is 20/20 right?

  11. Mr North Jersey

Beltran looks like was told for the good of the team you have to sit more than you’d like.

    My question is why now?

    Season’s over right?

Shouldn’t Beltran play so he can get hopefully get better?

    1. njstuckintx

Shouldn’t Beltran just sit and heal more thoroughly?

      1. Mr North Jersey

if that’s the case then dl him no?

        1. njstuckintx

Would be ideal, in my mind. Coming in Cold turkey at 50% doesn’t seem to be working all that well. The white flag is basically up. Why not heal up and be ready to play for one last contract, no?

          1. njstuckintx

And really, it is microfracture surgery. it really takes a full year to be back up to speed.

          2. stickguy

cold turkey? He got as many game ABs (if not more) as he would have gotten in ST. and said he felt fine.

did you want him to look out for him and boras and refuse to come back at all?

And TX, it was never confirmed to be MF surgery (actually, I thought they denied it). And likely he would still not be back.

          3. njstuckintx

I could have sworn it was microfracture. If not, then my bad. Tracy McGrady had microfracture and was back in 9 months time. Granted I hate basketball, it is on the radio all the time here in houston. So, maybe I had that on the mind. Anywho, I guess the thoughts on my mind (other than procrastination for work) is that he’s not comfortable at all with that brace and stuff still ain’t right with him physically. If it gets him back where he can be really good again, DL him for the year. If it is what it is, won’t get better and this is what we got, play away, I guess.

          4. Mr North Jersey

Of course the dodgers score 15 runs off the Phillies.

          5. gategem

            Did the Dodgers win?

  12. oleosmirf

great to see F-Mart have a pretty good game, Pelfrey throw a gem and Takahashi finally get his long overdue chance to be the 8th inning guy.

hopefully Misch makes the most of this opportunity but this move should have been made at least a month ago…

    1. Mr North Jersey

      i agree 100%

      1. Kingman 26

        Me too.

Love the kids and FMart and Thole looked very good.

I pray Jerry keeps playing them every day.

        1. oleosmirf

yea hopefully we find a way to move Francouer and move on from that…

  13. Mr North Jersey

My God Thole looks like a teenager.

  14. metsfan4decades

    LOL…Brandon Phillips.

Johnny Quato kicking his way out of that mob like a little kid….

  15. Mr North Jersey

So Brandon Phillips doesn’t like the Cardinals? I don’t see why that is such an issue? I don’t like the Phillies.

  16. Mr North Jersey

    Francoeur trade rumors?

    1. Mr North Jersey

NEW YORK — Benched to make room for a 21-year-old rookie, marginalized as a platoon player, Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur has told the club through his representatives that he is interested in being traded to a team that would play him more, both sides confirmed yesterday.

“We want to play every day,” Francoeur’s agent Molly Fletcher said yesterday. “We prefer to play in New York. But if we’re not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else.”

The Mets are aware of Francoeur’s position, a team official indicated.

      http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2010/08/mets_outfielder_jeff_francoeur_1.html

      1. Kingman 26

Yeah, three college teams, one in Japan, and the Bad News Bears have all shown lukewarm interest.Maybe we can trade him for Kelly Leak’s Harley.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Kelly Leak’s Harley?
          sounds like a porno.

          1. stickguy

especially since it was a Honda dirt bike.

          2. Kingman 26

            Really?!

I remember the line “Harley Davidson, that turn you on?”

Thanks for setting me straight…I love that movie.

          3. stickguy

unless it was a later movie in the series. I remember him driving the thing around the field to get away from someone before he joined the team.

But, I am old, feeble, and at the moment sick, so who the hell knows!

          4. stickguy

well dang. you were right (well, we both kinda are). It was a dirt bike, but a Harley (they used to make them back in the old days).

I will not question your wisdom again. unless you are supporting the Jidiot.

          5. stickguy

I love the internet. It is my best friend (next to my dog).

    2. metsfan4decades

I heard Sports Night say Jeff Francoeur up in a little while discussing trade rumors with him.

So I’m thinking it’s gonna be questions like ‘has he asked for a trade’, or ‘have you heard any rumors about you and a trade’…

      1. Mr North Jersey

        i think u r right 3d.

        So How’s your groove 4d?
        :-)

        1. Mr North Jersey

where did that 3 come from?

          1. metsfan4decades

            LOL…

Just heard Francoeur’s short interview on Sports Night.
            He said something like:
‘I’m sick and tired of talking about this. Been talking about it for 4 weeks. You want to talk about the game tonight or Big Pelf, fine’.

He went on to say something like it is what it is, he would like to play everyday, he’s here, he’s got a job to do and he’s gonna do it.

It’s about the only time I think I’ve ever saw Francoeur quite that frustrated or angry.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Frenchy can’t understand why the Mets cant trade him.

Poor Guy he clearly doesn’t know Minaya at all.

          3. stickguy

he also doesn’t realize he is the worst RF based on numbers in all of BB.

I believe he is still under the delusion that he is a starting quality player (and actually good).

he cleared waivers, so any team that wants him, just has to pick up the phone!

          4. Mr North Jersey

You must be talkin about another Francoeur.

            ;-)

          5. oleosmirf

the thing is his teammates (well Wright to be more specific) also seem to think of him as a quality bat as well, maybe even Jerry too..

          6. stickguy

Gee, I figured they would all be stat geeks by now. For sure they get interested when it is arbitration time.

I am not very interested in keeping the underperformers placated. perform of move on. It is a cold, cruel world, with nothing but 5 million/year to keep you company.

honestly, frenchy may end up trolling for a ST invite next year, assuming the mets are smart enough to non-tender him.

          7. stickguy

oh, and Wright apparently thinks Hojo is a good hitting coach. So maybe he isn’t as smart as we all assume?

          8. trs86

Frenchy would be in a tough spot if we offered arbitration. It would be too risky for us but strange for him too. He is a type B FA somehow currently.

He would be wise to take the 3-5M he would make YET could his ego take being a 4th OF? Would he take the 3-5M to ride the pine or take 1-2M to start for a scrub?

  17. Mr North Jersey

You gotta love NY Sports its better than any reality show or soap opera.

    1. Kingman 26

      Whaaaaaaat???

I always thought the Mets WERE a reality show/soap opera!

      1. Mr North Jersey

I wonder why HBO doesn’t do a show following the Mets in 2011?

        1. Kingman 26

HAHA! That would be better than the Sopranos.

  18. Mr North Jersey
