Most of you have probably already seen this but always worth another look is Matt Den Dekker’s amazing catch:

I was pleased when Morris signed. I had read some interviews with him about wanting to get “as much money as possible” and am glad the Mets offer impressed him enough. Here’s hoping he develops.

What’s going on with Matt Harvey? Are the Mets signing him?

    1. GravediggerHebner

I follow some of these “minor league gurus” on twitter and I’m sorry I can’t recall which one (maybe Keith Law or Jim Callis – someone like that) said they felt he would sign when asked specifically about it (they said only 2 guys in the 1st round might not sign & Harvey wasn’t 1 of them) but that because his agent is Scott Boras that it would not happen until the deadline which I believe is 8/15 but not sure.

The consensus seems to be Harvey will be signed (makes little sense for him to go back to school as next years draft is STACKED), supposedly they may sign Greg Peavey too (potential #4 starter type) pitching well in the CCL, hopefully both get done because while the Mets would get the 8th pick for Harvey next year a) that pick would be uninsured meaning the Mets would 100% take a guy who would be signed even if he didn’t belong being picked that high and b) who knows how willing they are to spend big money in ONE year on an expensive #8 pick and the 12-13-14 pick (whatever they end up this year)

I still think the Mets should not sign him and take their chances in next years draft.

luckily we will be bad enough this season so wont lose our 1st rounder if/when we sign a type A

    Oleo,
Like I stated above it doesn’t make a ton of sense to do that for the reasons I laid out. Next years pick (the one we got for Harvey) would be uninsured meaning if we didnt sign them we would get nothing which also means the Mets would likely take a guy who would sign for slot aka a guy with likely far less talent than Harvey and 2) with 2 high 1st round picks and the Mets unwilling to spend huge on the draft it would likely mean 2 “cheaper” guys vs. 1 big guy this year and one next.

    1. kistics

So basically Harvey need to be signed. When’s the deadline again?

    2. oleosmirf

i’m guessing you are high on Harvey but the Mets should not be concerned with money when it comes to drafting players. they are a big market team. the money they save by not signing Harvey gets transfered over to next years draft so problem solved. plus the chances payroll goes down next season is greater than 50-50.

the fact that the Mets can possibly get 2 top 12 picks in next years very deep draft will be huge for their farm system. get the 2 best pitchers they can get and lets go.

      1. kistics

But if the Mets sign a type A FA, Harvey’s pick could be gone. Isn’t that what Metro is saying?

        1. oleosmirf

well thats a different story but i interpreted it as, if the Mets dont get the 8th overall pick signed, they dont get the 9th pick in the 2011 draft.

and if the mets cant “afford” to sign the best player available in any spot but the pirates, nationals, royals can then its pretty sad…

What should be and what is are 2 different things. The Mets SHOULD be willing to pay 2 high money 1st round picks but history tells us the Mets are unwilling to spend a ton on the draft. Last year they were last in baseball both in total spending AND in average spent per pick. The Mets also operate in a year to year budget so the Mets won’t say “well we didn’t spend 3 on Harvey lets add that 3 to next years docket” they should be they don’t. Case in point is last years “lowest spent” unable to come to terms with 5th and 6th rounders yet didn’t take players who will break the bank with 24th rounder Erik Goedell being the only player they went significantly over slot for. Finally, yeah I do like Harvey. He maintains velocity, he was at one point regarded as the #2 HS pitcher in the nation behind Rick Porcello and he had a very solid Junior season which showed a spike in his velocity. Should he sign he would immediately become my #2 best pitching prospect in the Mets system while Peavy would be in my top 15 or so.

    1. oleosmirf

its just a real shame, how this organization does its business…

  7. metro

And again if the Mets don’t sign Harvey and some “best player” is available at 9 the Mets either have to be willing to spend WHATEVER IT TAKES or they get NOTHING as you get 1 shot at a “redo” pick so 99% of the time teams in that situation take easy to sign (less than the best level) guys.

    1. kistics

But the pick is not insured. So if the Mets sign a type A FA, then #9 pick is gone?

    Rob Dibble is a douche

    1. TRS86

but an incredibly savvy douche evidently. If he had not done and said this, then who is talking about Rob Dibble right now?

      1. kistics

        ah ha!

    2. oleosmirf

      politically correct police out again

  9. metro

    No to clarify

    - The Mets will have a 1st round pick in 2011 regardless of signing Harvey as long as they are in the first 15 picks (15 worst teams)

    - If the Mets fail to sign Harvey they get a replacement pick for Harvey (one after where he was picked) so in this case the 9th pick.

    - That pick doesn’t have the same coverage as the one who had this year. If the player we pick in that slot opts not to sign you get NOTHING the next year so a player picked in that slot is almost ALWAYS simply a guy who is 100% willing to sign vs. the Best possible talent because the “best possible talent” has demands and can ask for the moon and you can’t do anything about it. You either give him WHATEVER he wants (not what the Mets ever do) OR have NOTHING to show for your 2010 1st round pick AND your 2011 1st rounder you got for Harvey

    - If the Mets are one of the bottom 15 teams they can sign anybody they want and still have their 2011 pick.

    1. TRS86

I guess the question is if that pick is guaranteed by the same rules. If we sign a Type A it does not take away that pick either?

      1. TRS86

By the way the Mets are 19th in the Majors in wins and are 2 games back of 15th.

      2. kistics

That’s not too bad. But like Metro said, the replacement pick will be for someone who’s willing to sign and not the best talent out there.

Why can’t they just sign him already

    2. kistics

So if the Mets don’t sign Harvey, they will have two first round picks in 2011 draft.

      1. TRS86

Yes, however, that pick if he goes unsigned is lost. Thus you are at the mercy of the draft pick.

        1. oleosmirf

more like the cheapness of the Wilpons…
