Post Game: Hessman’s Homer Wins Dickey’s No-Hitter, Sort Of

"The umpire says he missed it by that much."

Yet another day will pass without a New York Mets no-hitter but at least Mike Hessman got his 1st major league triple tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies.  Mets starter R.A. Dickey (8-5) walked former Met Wilson Valdez with 1 out in the 3rd inning dashing hopes of a perfect game.  With 1 out in the 6th inning opposing pitcher Cole Hamels (7-9) singled between the outgoing 2nd baseman Ruben Tejada and incoming RF Jeff Francoeur for what turned out to be the Phillies only other base runner of the game.  Dickey wound up throwing 105 pitches in the 1-hit complete game shutout of the Phillies, the Mets 4th consecutive shutout of the Phillies at Citi Field.

Ibanez suggests to umpires it was not a home run

The Mets scored only 1 run in this game.  They thought they had that run in the 5th inning.  Hessman led off the inning with a blast to left field.  Phillies LF Raul Ibanez ran back to the wall and made odd hand gestures resembling those of a zombie from an old horror film as the ball bounced down onto the field.  Replays showed that a fan reached out over a short fence that sits above the orange home run line and attempted to catch the ball but missed and it appeared to hit above the orange line then bounce down.  Umpires called home run and Ibanez protested.  The umpiring crew conferred and 3 members left the field to view the replay.  The replay rules are such that the call made on the field, in this case that of home run, stands unless indisputable evidence to the contrary is revealed in the replay.  Well we will have to wait for the umpires to explain what they saw because after a lengthy delay they returned to the field and informed Hessman that he had a triple.  Given that these are your 2010 New York Mets Hessman was stranded on 3rd base after his lead off “triple.”  But thankfully for Mets fans in the 6th inning David Wright hit a 2-out double then Carlos Beltran doubled to drive him in with the run that Dickey had taken from him the inning before, the only run he would need.  Final score New York 1, Philadelphia 0.

2 in a row. you need 2 to eventually get to 12 in a row, I believe someone mentioned in the dugout.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      lol that be me.

    2. stickguy

put 1 foot in front of the other, and pretty soon your walking down the road……

      1. metsfan4decades

        Then let’s keep on walking….

  2. GravediggerHebner

Igarahsi and Valdes demoted per Adam Rubin (to make room for KRod & Misch).

    1. Mr North Jersey

Grave i noticed the mets win somehow was not at original dimmension due to me probably messing with it originally but i reset it to its original size of 490×225 and it looks much better. I hope you don’t mind me doing that?

      1. GravediggerHebner

No I want it to look right so thank you.

Speaking of looking right if possible can you teach me how to manually center my pics in the post since the program apparently refuses to do it?

        1. Mr North Jersey

no prob the only thinng is that in the old site whenever u switch back to visual the tags to center are wiped out.

So basically you have to do that last in html and remember to make sure to readd the tags if you open post to redit in visual mode.

R u familiar with any html codes Grave?

Cause it is a <_center> image here

of course you would just remove the underscore from the brackets.

          1. Mr North Jersey

i just added the tags if you edit it in html you will see them.

the trick i use to be sure it opens in html is i open a blank new post in html 1st then i open the post i want to see so it also opens in html.

somehow wordpress always remembers what mode you was last in be it html or visual.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Yes I noticed how it always remembers what you did your last post in that’s spooky.

Thank you for the lesson I will practice that so I get it right and I understand what you mean about removing the underscore to make it work but I wouldn’t have known to do that so thanks for mentioning it.

          3. Mr North Jersey

hopefully we can figure out why the align center doesnt seem to work.

          4. TRS86

Thing is I fixed Will’s today using the center button.

      2. TRS86

It was me in response to the feature post square only showing “et in”
        instead of Mets Win.

Not sure what we need to do for some pics to work in the slide show and the feature box.

        1. Mr North Jersey

yea no was around that trs. I figured the feat is whats most important.

          1. Mr North Jersey

should say no way not no was lol.

          2. TRS86

Yeah, there has to be something. Some work very well. Not sure if it’s the size or what.

          3. Mr North Jersey

u have 3 different thumbnail sizes on this page the feature thumbnail size is 490×225

Then the more from trdm are 225×225

Then the in case you missed it are 225×130

The proportions are not the same the feat will square up ok once they get to the in case you missed it. but other than that stuff will get cropped off.

          4. TRS86

Should we think about going with a rectangle for “More from TRDM” as well?

          5. Mr North Jersey

            Well that should help.

If you do I recommend making them the same size as “in case you missed it”.

          6. TRS86

Yeah, as soon as Matt fixes the test site I broke I will play around with it. LOL.

Also, we have had a few more readers complain about this center column.

          7. GravediggerHebner

For what it’s worth I liked the sample you showed us via email in which it was wider (if I recall correctly it was because all the sidebar stuff was on the right only).

          8. Mr North Jersey

WELL DONT PLAY WITH ANYTHING IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON GOING TO 2 COLUMNS CAUSE YOU MAY JUST HAVE TO PLAY WITH THEM ALL OVER AGAIN OF YOU DO SO.

SORRY BOUT CAPS JUST TOO LAZY 2 RETYPE AFTER I SAW IT WAS IN CAPS.

          9. TRS86

Gotta fix the test site before I do anything. I was working on putting the date and time in the slide show as well as getting rid of the summary to match everything else. I knew exactly HOW to do it but put in one too many () and poof.

    2. metsfan4decades

I just cannot wrap my brain around why Perez is still on this roster.

Mets are paying him, he’s not pitching, he’s sitting in the pen and we’re playing with a 24 man team.

We release him, we’re still paying him, he’s still not pitching and we play with a 25 man team.

      No. Brainer.

      1. oleosmirf

        principle

  3. metsfan4decades

Again: ‘We don’t need no stinkin’ closer’.

What more can you say about RA? Just outstanding performance tonight. Too bad pretty boy Hamels got in the way.

Little things to take away from this game:
    1. Didn’t have a closer. RA made sure we didn’t need one.
    2. Offense almost non existent but nice to see Wright and Beltran getting it done to get a run in.
    3. Umps need glasses. Jerry saying that the way he understands it is the umps go to MLB (call in), they review all angles, they make the call? Makes me wonder just what angle they were watching and if they know the Citi rules.

Jerry said he believes Hessman got the triple b/c to credit him, he ran hard out of the box.

I’ll be happy if we can sweep these Phillies……

  4. metsfan4decades

As usual, great graphics and theme, Grave.

‘Missed it by that much’. Sad to say I’m old enough to see that show in it’s first run. LOL….

  5. TRS86

Did I read that right? 4 shut outs in a row vs the Phillies at Citi? wow.

Also have to wonder, how many times has there been a 1 hitter that the one hit was the pitcher?

    1. stickguy

really driving the dopey talking heads on the philly sports network nuts too.

that, and whining about how bad Hamels run support is. I am sure Johan feels terrible for him.

to be fair, Cole has pitched 4 games vs. the mets, has a 24-4 K/BB rate, and something like 5 runs allowed. And he is 0-3.

      Awwwwww.

    2. oleosmirf

well they always say the best way to hit a knuckleballer is to send out 9 pitchers…

    3. metsfan4decades

That is correct. Phills have not scored one run at Citi field so far this year.

  6. stickguy

dont understand iggy back down. Dessans has not pitched in 2 weeks. Iggy can big a big part of the pen next year hopefully. so why is elmer rotting in the pen, and Iggy in the minors?

    1. TRS86

      options…

      sigh…

      1. stickguy

I know about options, but at this point, so what? Odds are Elmer clears, and if he doesn’t, BFD. He doesn’t pitch anyway, and wont be around next year.

        1. TRS86

I know you are right. Just telling you why.

    2. kingman 26

I am sure Ike will be sent down next so Hessman can play more.

Stick, saw your note; sorry to hear it–will be working all day and was psyched to walk down the street six blocks to the track. Next time!

      1. stickguy

will try to do it next year. I would certainly prefer being at the track with the rest of my family as opposed to being home sick.

        1. kingman 26

Sorry you are sick my friend; get well and may the Mets bring you another health-improving win tomorrow.

Maybe Jerry will sit Reyes and Ike and Wright and Beltran tomorrow.

          1. stickguy

how come in rock videos the base player always has to hide in the shadows?

          2. GravediggerHebner

Because he’s sexier than the lead singer who is insecure and thus makes him stand in the dark.

          3. stickguy

my favorite was AC/DC, where the lead guitarist (and showboat) had his brother hiding behind the drum riser.

          4. kingman 26

            Yeah, I guess we do….

OK, go to youtube and search for Bone Cellar 29 live or Happy Stars 29 live. This is a popular Seattle cable show from the mid-90s.

            I am the bass player.

In the Old Paint clip, I am wearing an Arizona DBacks shirt TWO YEARS before they played their first game. Pretty cool.

They begged me for years to dress up as a woman, and in the Camper Top clip, it was Halloween and my girlfriend at the time and the other guys conspired and begged me to do it. The breasts are fake.

          5. stickguy

that’s why I asked. I saw the clips, and in most of them, the bass player’s head was in the shadows.

Not exactly high end AV quality on those babies!

          6. kingman 26

            Public TV circa 1995!

            Sure was fun as hell.

  7. metsfan4decades

RA says on post game about the one hitter:

My knuckle ball was working tonight, it was a real good one, it felt good coming out of my hand. I only threw 3 fbs. I was going all the way, no question tonight. Jerry could see it. There was no discussion in the dugout. Only ‘you good’? and answer ‘I’m good’.

You go out with a goal to pitch a no hitter every outing.
I could pretend to myself that Hamels didn’t get that hit or I could be mad at Frenchy that he didn’t throw him out at first.
Seriously, I have no should/woulda/couldas though tonight. Only an ‘aw shucks’.

    Gotta love RA.

    1. kingman 26

Dickey is such a frigin breath of fresh air for this team.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t ask for an outrageous salary for 2011.

Can you imagine the PR nightmare if he goes elsewhere to get paid?

      18 team shutouts now?

      Hope is alive for 2011.

      1. stickguy

what is more amazing? Mets have 18, or that 5 are against the phils?

        1. kingman 26

          Excellent question.

        2. TRS86

I would say the 18, considering who we have as our starting staff. Also factoring in the Phillies have been streaky all year offensively.

      2. TRS86

Kingman we were talking about this in the dugout. Based on what we can tell, he is 3rd year arbitration eligible this year. That should keep his salary down.

  8. kingman 26

And we can all rest SO easy now; Misch is being brought up, so the tremendously abused Oliver Perez will NOT be mistreated in such an unfair way by being asked to pitch a game to earn his $240,000 a week salary.

I know I will sleep MUCH easier tonight not having to worry about Ollie tossing and turning all night once again from this outrageous treatment at the hands of the miserly, monstrous, mistreating Mets.

    1. oleosmirf

i know, he’s young, extremely talented and left-handed, he should be starting. all he need is some confidence!!!

      1. kingman 26

We must baby him, and bring him along slowly…if we use him just right, by about 2016, he will again be hitting 90 on the radar gun.

    2. TRS86

Kingman I think you are taking Ceetar’s comment out of context.

I don’t think in the beginning of the year the Mets were fair to Perez. He stunk but deserved a few more starts to get it right. I also think the Mets were not fair to him in the fact they brought him up early to not pitch him. Do I feel bad for him? Uh no. Do I think that the Mets AND Ollie screwed up this situation royally? Yeah.

      1. stickguy

        agreed all the way around.

      2. kingman 26

        - 10.

      3. oleosmirf

he did not deserve more starts b/c it was apparent that he couldn’t pitch and more starts would have = more losses.

why they brought him up early, i have no idea. i just attribute it to the Mets organization being inept…

        1. TRS86

I can’t agree. 7 starts coming back from injury is not enough to judge.
He also had a few decent starts in that 7. 3 decent starts, 3 really bad starts and 1 eh.

          1. oleosmirf

not when the object is to win games its not. cant afford to throw away games on the slim chance Ollie was going to get better.

          2. kingman 26

No offense TRS, but you could not be more wrong here. A scatter-armed pitcher without good control and without a big arsenal of pitches has zero hope of being successful at the MLB level when his entire game was throwing 94 if he now tops out at 89.

          3. oleosmirf

he doesnt even top out at 89 anymore. he sits at around 86 with the occasional 87, 88.

          4. TRS86

I don’t like Ollie but lets be fair. His AVERAGE FB this year is at 88.1 according to Fangraphs. Now factor that in with some starts where he was throwing as you said 86 then that means some he was throwing 89-91. I have no idea what his issue is.

          5. TRS86

Oh I agree he was not going to be successful. However, after 7 starts it was too early to pull him completely and what they have done since then is just a shame. Obviously Ollie has not made things better and could have cured it all by accepting the demotion. However, the Mets could have handled it so much better. Again, 3 decent starts, 3 bad starts and one average start after coming back from an injury and you yank him?

As for Oleo saying you were throwing away games? How does that account for the 3 good games? What you did have was an incredible amount of inconsistency, in other words bad Ollie. Personally I would have given him at least 10 starts to make a judgment and if he still could not get going then offer him either a demotion or a release. Plain and simple the Mets and Ollie have both mishandled this disaster.

          6. oleosmirf

            97 pitches in 5 IP 3 R 2 ER is not a “good” start.

2 quality starts, 2 ok ones and 3 god awful ones are certainly enough to remove a guy from the rotation who hasnt looked good since his first pitch since signing that contract.

          7. TRS86

So 3 bad starts in 7 are enough to move a guy that was penciled into your rotation for the year? The contract has nothing to do with it. Again 3 really bad starts out of 7 after coming back from an injury? Not enough. 10 starts maybe enough.

          8. oleosmirf

a player who is only penciled in b/c of his contract, yes. he was the weakest SP going in, and he proved it over and over again. I dont see what another 3 starts would have done???

it got to the point where Ollie was hurting the team and needed to be replaced, and if i’m not mistaken the guy they called up did a semi decent job.

          9. TRS86

Actually Maine was the weakest. And as I pointed out, Perez had pitched a very decent game just 2 games before they benched him.

          10. oleosmirf

how was Maine the worse pitcher going in. he actually had a decent 2009 whereas Ollie couldnt get his act together and got “hurt”

          11. TRS86

Maine if you recall was hurt and shot too. He actually pitched worse than Perez. Many of us on this site were even more worried about Maine than Perez. Turns out both groups were right. The were both shot.

  9. stickguy

gotta admit, I am getting used to the new site. And it is growing on me. Especially after I discovered that the latest tab lists previous posts in order.

now, is there a way to read posts without losing the dugout?

    1. TRS86

Well, same as before. Open up 2 tab’s. That’s about it.

  10. asod75

Valdes and Iggy sent down for K-Rod and Misch. Would have preferred Dessens to Iggy since the team really needs to see if Igs can get it done long-term (and Dessens was around during the signing of the Declaration of Independence, therefore has no future on the team). But guess it’s no big deal, Dessens never pitches anymore and clueless Jerry never would have used Iggy either.

    1. TRS86

I wonder if that is part of the reason. Need to get Iggy innings?

      1. TRS86

He will be back in 2 weeks anyway.

    2. oleosmirf

well its not like Igarashi wont be here in a few weeks anyway. i think the fact that Dessens > Igarashi is all the explanation needed

      1. asod75

True, but Igs has better stuff than Old Man Dessens. Need to know if he can make any contribution at big-league level, but as TRS said, he’ll be back in Sept. Jerry never uses the last three guys in the pen anyway because he is a moron.

  11. metsfan4decades

wow….the pendulum swinging so fast back and forth you almost don’t have time to duck…

Guest analyst on Face Off on Sports Night tonight Sal Licata
    comments something like:
The media, the fans, everyone has absolutely killed Jerry Manuel this year. But you have to give him credit. This team showing some fight. In light of the FO giving him not enough to get the job done, playing with a 22/23/24 man team at most times, the KRod incident, having no closer, the hoopla, you have to give him some credit with what he’s been able to do to rally this team lately. This team could have just laid down and just played out the rest of the season. The team stood up though, Johan and RA went out there and got the job done. If it was a big name manager, we’d all be praising him. Give Jerry some credit.

    OhhhhKayyyy…..

    1. TRS86

Key in broadcasting, 1) Say what ever will create buzz. 2) Report facts. 3) Always do 1 before 2.

      1. asod75

Um…they just won back to back games for the first time in nearly two months. Sal Licata is a bigger moron than Jerry is……

    2. kingman 26

If he hadn’t put a garbage pitcher in Wed night, we would have a 4-game winning streak.

And sitting Ike tonight was moronic.

    3. GravediggerHebner

Licata is the only “media member” I am aware of who thinks Manuel is a positive attribute to the ballclub. The only one. He was having a twitter-fight about that topic recently in which it was him against everybody else.

In case you are not familiar with his story I put “media member” in quotes because Licata was one of the behind-the-scenes guys on Francesa’s radio show but was fired for badmouthing a sponsor (on twitter if I recall correctly). So he went from unemployed former radio show co-producer to TV personality which I guess says something about SNY’s hiring practices or pay scale.

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL….

    4. oleosmirf

the ONLY reason they won these 2 games was because Santana and Dickey threw a CG SO 2 days in a row.

Jerry didnt even make a single move in either of the last 2 games so Jerry didnt get the chance to f up. im sure he’ll manage to do something idiotic tomorrow to get things back to normal…

      1. stickguy

SPs throwing shutouts + jerry not having to wake up from his nap is pretty much the only way for the mets to win games these days.

  12. stickguy

of interest, and something a met fan will never understand, Chase Utley is supposedly way ahead of schedule, and could be back 2 weeks early.

    1. TRS86

Oh we have heard that before too. In-fact we have even rushed guys back. Only to have negative results. Course the same can be said of the Phillies who always seem to rush Utley back.

  13. stickguy

    prediction of the day:

if the Mets have nothing but shutouts the rest of the year, they will make the playoffs.

    1. TRS86

nah, still .500. It’s just the METS will be shut out in the other half.

      1. oleosmirf

last time i checked there arent ties in baseball, so if the Mets shutout the opponent, they cant lose a game.

    2. njstuckintx

108 wins just might get them in. barely.

  14. GravediggerHebner

Video of KRod punching his common-law-father-in-law ;-)

    http://bunkercomplex.tumblr.com/post/902143003

    1. metsfan4decades

      Ha! Classic.

  15. stickguy

for everyone that thinks the mets are eliminated already, if they manage to sweep this weekend, they are only 4 back on the phils.

    1. njstuckintx

then 4 against the ‘Stros, which are all win-able.

    2. asod75

Tomorrow is the key game. Need Misch to deliver against Halladay. Doubt the Mets reach him for five runs again, so Misch really can’t give up more than three, and even that may be too much. But you never know, Mets may rock Halladay and get blanked by Kendrick. Baseball’s funny that way….

    3. Mr North Jersey

I am trying to understand how does that matter when we are 9 games behind the braves and 7.5 games behind the giants?

      1. stickguy

it ain’t over til it’s over?

Or, a 9 game winning streak right about now will but the mets a whole lot more in it than they are at the moment.

      2. hazmet

Hey MNJ, great job by trdmb crew getting this new site up & tuned. I hear you on your comment, I’m taking it a game at a time. I look at the schedule and I see 10 of the next 15 against the Stros & Pirates before they meet up with Atlanta next and that gives me hope till I see that the Braves are playing the Nationals, Cubs and Rockies over the same stretch. Then I focus on the Giants who over the same stretch take on the Phil’s, Cardinals, Pod’s and Reds and think there’s reason to hope there given those match ups. Then I consider the tank job against the D-backs post all star break and think why would I expect a run against any team by this squad. As such, I step back and have resigned myself to taking each game a day at a time and enjoying each game that’s left since a day with a bad day of baseball is better than no baseball at all. With the end of the season drawing close I’ll enjoy each inning and if something historic in the comeback column is in the cards I’ll enjoy every moment. For tonight I’ll enjoy this win. LGM!

        1. Mr North Jersey

I hear and applaud you Haz.

I am to an extent where you are in regards to just enjoyin what games r left and even with a loss lookin at the positives that may have come out of it like a player going 2 for 4 for example.

Enjoy the rest of the season and thx for the compliments.

        2. GravediggerHebner

Now there’s a slogan for your 2010 New York Mets:

A bad day of baseball is better than no baseball at all.
