Wonder if his contract can be voided over this? Non baseball-related injury, due to his own stupidity. Why, God, why have you made me a Mets fan? Almost like we’re being punished for the awesomeness that was 1986.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      good question.

    2. oleosmirf

most likely no but what it does ensure 2 things:

      1. The Mets will finish below .500 this season.
      2. K-rod wont get the necessary games finished to trigger that dreaded option.

      1. metsfan4decades

#2….no, if I understand his contract correctly.
He needs 100 game appearances in 2010-2011 with 55 of those coming in 2011. He’s got 46 this year. This injury shouldn’t keep him out in 2011. If he stays healthy in ’11, that option should be met.

        1. oleosmirf

well considering the Mets most likely will be missing the playoffs next year, they can either trade K-Rod or keep him from finishing 100 games.

if the Mets are a playoff team next season then I want him for 2012.

        2. njstuckintx

Just start having his common law mother in law start attending games next year after the all star break. That should fix the situation.

      2. wannybackstra

he finished 66 and 69 games in the last two seasons. if he’s back by april he should reach the incentive.

fatcessa missed this fact before he went off the air.

if krod can’t start the season on time this incident is a blessing in disguise.

        1. oleosmirf

they wont let him reach 54 games finished next season unless they are in the race…

  2. Gonzo Will

Fred and Jeff might have killed someone in a former life to get this kind of luck. Wow—now the season is over unless every pitcher can pitch a complete game

  3. metsfan4decades

    Wow….is my first reaction.
Why am I not surprised?…..is my second thought.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, is my third thought.

You know….typical reactions as one would expect from a long suffering Met fan.

BP by committee – all hands on deck.

    Oleo,
Good point about the dreaded option not kicking in. K-Rod deserves it for being such a classless moron. Now if only they’d fire the coaching staff and start preparing for 2011 by playing the kids more often. Season’s over anyway, maybe F-Mart catches fire and enhances his trade value….

    It just keeps getting better

At this stage of the season and with the dreadful play of the team since just before the ASB does K-Rod’s asinine injury really matter?

    1. kingman 26

      Not in the slightest.

  7. kingman 26

And if they void KRod, we have Parnell as closer next year.

    No thanks.

    1. asod75

We don’t know that Kong. I’m sure there will be a few stopgap type guys available. Point is, money would be freed up to (hopefully) use more effectively elsewhere.

    2. kingman 26

      Very possible.

However, with what we have seen since the day Bay signed, this could very well simply be an opportunity for the Wilpons to save more money.

Pessimistic yes, but spending zero at the deadline when so many guys were traded has me believing those who suggest that the Wilpons will lower payroll even more in 2011.

KRod is far from perfect, but is very good, and bad as we have been this year, we would have been out of it a lot earlier without his very good performance.

But, I sincerely hope you are right.

Oh, and a while ago I commented on your blog about your spot-on review of the re-issue of the Stones’ Exile–great job!

for sure, they are going to push hard to not pay him the rest of this year. and that they deserve to win.

can they get out of the rest of the contract entirely? No idea, but if possible, then yeah, go for it.

    1. oleosmirf

unfortunately the 3 million they will save from this injury wont be reinvested into the team.

btw take a look at Jason Michaels, he would be a nice 4th OF for us next season…

  9. stickguy

my favorite thing about this latest mess:

watching jerry try to is-manage a BP without a closer. He is totally befuddled by the 8th inning. The 9th might have him curled up in a fetal position, sucking his thumb!

The route to voiding the contract if they care to short version: Yes they can based on CBA page 217 para 7.b.1, termination pay based on article IX page 29 remaining salary less workmans comp pay back to club, regulation 2 page 223 last sentence of regulation.

Had the entire CBA paragraphs entered but trimmed it to the important words, CBA can be reviewed on line, obviously, thereby the page ref’s above if you’d like to check it out. One clarifier, who knows what’s in K-Rod’s specific contract language.

Termination By Club (Page 217 of CBA)
7.(b) The Club may terminate this contract upon written notice to the
Player (but only after requesting and obtaining waivers of this contract
from all other Major League Clubs) if the Player shall at any time:
    (1) fail, refuse or neglect to conform his personal conduct to the
standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship or to keep
himself in first-class physical condition or to obey the Club’s training
    rules; or
    (2) fail, in the opinion of the Club’s management, to exhibit sufficient
skill or competitive ability to qualify or continue as a member
    of the Club’s team; or
    (3) fail, refuse or neglect to render his services hereunder or in
any other manner materially breach this contract.
7.(c) If this contract is terminated by the Club, the Player shall be entitled to termination pay under the circumstances and in the amounts setforth in Article IX of the Basic Agreement. …

Article IX of CBA Trmination Pay page 29 of CBA)
    E. Injury
If a Player’s Contract is terminated by a Club by reason of the Player’s
failure to render his services due to a disability resulting directly from
injury sustained in the course and within the scope of his employment
under the Contract, and notice is received by the Club in accordance
with Regulation 2 of the Uniform Player’s Contract, the Player shall be
entitled to receive from the Club the unpaid balance of the full salary
for the year in which the injury was sustained, less all workers’ compensation payments received by the Player as compensation for loss of income for the specific period for which the Club is compensating him in full.

Regulation 2 (page 223 of CBA)
    2. …. All workmen’s compensation payments received by the Player as compensation for loss of income for a specific period during which the Clubis paying him in full, shall be paid over by the Player to the Club. Any other disability may be ground for suspending or terminating this contract.

    1. oleosmirf

      doesn’t option 2 cover Ollie?

      1. oleosmirf

oops forgot to read carefully, this critical phrase, “but only after requesting and obtaining waivers of this contract
from all other Major League Clubs” means K-Rod will be a Met in 2011.

however, the injury was suffered while committing a misdemeanor so obviously K-Rod wont be entitled to any salary until he has recovered…
