Mets activated Rod Barajas today and to open a spot on the roster optioned Fernando Martinez back down to AAA.
Here is the official press release:
FLUSHING, N.Y., August 19, 2010 – The New York Mets today announced that they have activated catcher Rod Barajas from the 15-Day Disabled List and optioned outfielder Fernando Martinez to Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Barajas, who has been on the Disabled List since July 27th with a strained left oblique, will be active for tonight’s game in Houston.
The 34-year-old catcher appeared in five games with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League and the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets as part of his major league rehabilitation assignment. He combined to hit .238 (5-21) with two runs scored, one home run and five RBI. The Paradise Valley, AZ native last played for the Mets on July 24th and is hitting .228 (56-246) with 30 runs scored, 11 doubles, 12 home runs and 34 RBI in 73 games with the Mets.
Martinez, 21, hit .167 (3-18) with one run scored and two RBI in seven games with the Mets since being recalled from Buffalo (AAA) on August 7th. The Santo Domingo, DR native returns to the Bisons where he hit .255 (63-247) with 38 runs scored, 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 33 RBI in 68 games earlier this season.

If Grave were here I wonder what he would say at the idea that the Mets once again are carrying 3 catchers and basically playing with a 23 man roster?
Especially when it comes at a time where the season is over.

He’d probably say something holier-than-thou while using unnecessarily humongous words and too many of them in too many sentences.
My opinion is the right thing to do would be cut Barajas – his contract ends with the end of the season, it’s not a rich contract, he doesn’t seem to have a future with the club, he’s having a poor year in a poor career – so why is he still here?
If they’re not going to play FMart almost every day then I think it’s better for him to be in AAA playing every day but I wonder why he wasn’t played every day here.
Jerry seems to be doing that “win now” thing but doing it in his usually poorly-constructed way and at a time when logic would seem to dictate that “win now” isn’t the appropriate course of action but “player development” is.
I was up near Dartmouth College for a couple days doing some family stuff but I’m back now and I see you guys have been very prolific so I’ve got a lot of reading to do. Wish me luck.

2 humongous thumbs up, Jerry much like last year having Evans up and giving him a handful of AB’s spread over weeks.

Does this mean the Mets are officially giving up on FMart?

If he had any shot of starting next year, why wouldn’t they give him as much time as they could as a starter while it doesn’t really matter?

Here you go this from Adam Rubin.
But Jerry Manuel added that the organization is not committed to starting Thole the bulk of the games the remainder of the season. Particularly if Barajas can match his April/May performance of 11 homers — and that’s a big if — the veteran catcher and not Thole will log the bulk of the duty, according to Manuel.
“The case is to win games and put what you think is the best team out there,” Manuel said. “If he does go on one of those binges, you can get he will be playing the majority of the time.”

The rest of the world musn’t have gotten the memo Jerry received predicting a 30-12 run over the last 42 games to maybe have a shot.
Unreal we can’t just find out what the kids got now in real games over an extended period.

Absolutely no reason to carry three catchers and idiot Perez on the roster. None. And this is why Jerry should have been fired, even if they just brought in an interim guy for the rest of the season. He’s again doing things to try to save his job, not what’s best for the organization. Barajas has no future here, you’ve got to see what Thole can do and if he’s even a viable option as starter next year. As for F-Mart, I didn’t get why they called him up if they weren’t going to play him every day. Seems that was the plan at first, but Frenchy complained and Jerryatric backed off. Not saying F-Mart really deserved to be here (Duda, Evans, Captain Kirk and Ratliff all have better numbers than the 21-year-old out machine), but if he was up, he should have been playing to see if he can help the club next year or intrigue another team as trade bait. The moves this organization make continue to befuddle anyone with a functional brain. Little League teams are run better…..
