Glad I read the third link last. The other two were just too depressing to comment on…..
This organization is just a mess right now.

The Ollie Perez situation is maddening. The team just can not survive playing with a 24 man roster against teams with 25 man rosters. Now because of it, the team only has 3 real outfielders.

McCullough did a great job in that Fernando Martinez article, especially with the following:

“What we’re trying to do is take him to a level of where he can recognize the off-speed pitches,” Manuel said, “and use that quick bat that he has and that power that he has and put a good swing on it.”

Of course, with little playing time, it would be difficult to acclimate to the sharpness of major-leagues pitching. Manuel designated Martinez, a 21-year-old rookie, as an every-day corner outfielder upon his arrival. But Jeff Francoeur sapped away some playing time. Martinez faded into the background. When Rod Barajas left the disabled list on Thursday, Martinez left the team.

For his part, he was nonplussed. His call-up surprised him in the first place. He was never told he would start each day. He expects to rejoin the team when rosters expand in September.

“Just go back and come back in like two weeks,” he said.

It is difficult to extrapolate any real knowledge from his time here. A collection of 22 plate appearances does create a helpful sample size. He did not show much power or much aptitude for walks. But he did not reach many opportunities, either.

The obvious question is: What was the point? Why interrupt a successful minor-league season for 22 plate appearances? Martinez remains one of the team’s best prospects. Why over-accelerate his path?
